Callum Wright to Plymouth

Completely agree.

Not the player you need in a relegation scrap.
Yes completely agree with all thats said , Wright looked to have potential but if his wages are 5 grand a week then a transfer against 3/4 year contract you must be talking 7/8 hundred thousand. That can be reinvested in what we need right now. People on here can question why etc but
decisions have to be made to take us forward and get those players who will make a difference. In Simon we trust.

Think how early we’re getting business done is speaking volumes for the 2 lads we poached off Cov and how they deal with things.

Give him 12/18 months with Plymouth he'll fill out & toughen up will be ready for the championship if Plymouth get there. We cant wait that long.

Aren’t you all high and mighty.

The club labelled him one for the future four months ago and have now shipped him off.

Would be weird if people weren’t speculating.

Yes I am.

Thanks.

Yes I agree it does appear that way, but money talks, Plymouth think he's a good player for them in there division. Maybe we thought he would be ahead of Patino & Carey, but if he does'nt do it on the traning pitch then he does'nt get in the first 11. I have to say when I first saw him I thought what have got here, hair band, 22yrs is he ready for championship football. This league gets tougher every season and more athletic. Whoever comes in to replace must be a warrior.

Whilst it reflects badly on the summer, it also shows now we're not messing around with the new guys in.

This actually fills me with a lot of confidence that they are being very decisive. Literally no one saw him leaving permanently despite him not yet showing anything, maybe a loan and seeing if he'll improve etc. But presumably they spotted it and said no, we need to clear the decks and free up as much as possible.

Also, I don't think we'd get rid if we havent already sourced a replacement or were supremely confident of a replacement.

What was Wright anyway? He wasn't a Bowler like winger, wasn't he an attacking mid who can also do winger like things and score goals, from what we saw of his highlights before we signed him anyway, we didn't witness any of the that ourselves.

So another attacking mid should come in then you'd think.

But the main thing is, these new recruitment lads seem to know the championship and what it takes be successful at this level.

Am a bit more optimistic about this window now, but it still comes down to money and getting deals done.

👍

It’s just a bit annoying isn’t it, how aren’t we bringing quality in before we let fringe players go?
Not even slightly, If the right player takes a week longer to come in than the wrong ones who are going out (especially with a meaningless game in the bigger scheme of things on Saturday) then who gives a monkeys?

I think I agree with you on the ‘decisive’ point.. I thought the same myself. It’s very easy to waste time, money & that vital squad place trying to save face in the hope he might come good… He’s clearly not right for us … and we’ve decided to move swiftly on.

It is a physical league and we’re already lacking in that regard… Callum was very ‘powder puff’ in the games we’ve seen him TBF.

Ryan Hardie is a success with Plymouth. Doesn't make them Championship level players.

Nowhere near good enough. Club had no choice but to get rid. As others have said, at least the club are acting and hopefully learning from past mistakes. It probably is too late but got to try.

He showed more than enough promise against Norwich to make me believe he can cut it at this level, but I'm not upset over this because it probably means we have someone else lined up.

If Plymouth were able to sign him permanently with him still being on a multi year contract that would lead me to believe that we minimum recouped the fee we paid for him.

Ruthless, but I don't mind at all.

No wonder they have changed the recruitment team. Seems like he was never an Appleton player.

They were both at Leicester together though, I think it was a last minute "get Appleton to use up his connections" type of transfer.

When he signed, Appleton did say:
"Callum is a player that I’ve known for a while because Leicester took him in during the time I was there"

Schumacher seems like a decent judge, so I would expect this to come back and bite us at some point.
If we manage to stay up this season I don’t think many of us will care too much though.

Stephen Schumacher clearly thinks he can make a Championship midfielder out of Wright… begs the question: why can’t Michael Appleton?

Maybes Appleton saw he was a mistake and shipped him off as quick as we signed him

He was one for the future and may still be for Plymouth but so far this season, he looked unable to compete against Championship players.

Players come & go, I dont think he was 100% for the cause. and it seems he nearly went to Plymouth prior to coming to us.

Sonny Carey was brought in from non league as a future player and was given his 1st team chance almost immediately (albeit limited number of games at the start) until he got his bad injury. Callum Wright on the other hand was given a number of opportunities and although played well against Norwich the rest was underwhelming. The difference between these 2 players appears to be attitude and l guess that’s why Callum has been moved on and Sonny continues to learn his trade with us.

All it does mean is that we've looked at him and decided he isn't up to what we need. If we thought he had the potential, we'd have loaned him out. It is as clear as day our problem is in midfield, the system Appleton plays can't cope with average players or we are exposed too often. Hopefully we have a couple of midfielders sorted, if they f*ck it up again and we end up waiting until the end of January, we have every right to question our recruitment recently.

It begs the question who made the contact first. Wright clearly wanted to go to Plymouth. Once you have a player who is not happy with his situation etc you move him on. I hope the club have someone lined up who is more beneficial to the team.

He was a panic buy and sod all to do with MA, the previous recruitment team were clearly not fit for purpose and thankfully they have been booted, but the damage their poor work has done to the club has been huge. Who was responsible for interviewing them and taking them on as they signed some seriously awful players from Nuttall to Wright. We have to hope that the guys from Coventry are on the money cause they have to be. We will see at the end of this window how they are doing and of course they then need to be backed by the board re fees and wages.

Callum Wright sounds like he didn't want to be here in the first place which probably reflects why we find it so difficult in the transfer market:
"It came about on Deadline Day, I didn’t have much else. I had a go at it, but now that Argyle has come back about, I am buzzing to get it done."

Probably financially the same but a chance to live in Cornwall amongst other head band type, it's a no brainer for him.

I’m not so sure about there being no connection to MA, herts… He said he knew him from his time at Leicester…

I think you may be right with a panic buy, but Bo do wonder if we may have had a situation where MA was contributing to the recruitment ‘pot’ and that maybe he and the recruitment team were not entirely on the same page (to put it nicely)…

Correct me if I’m wrong but as a coach you have no input whatsoever (or maybe limited) into the recruitment of players, and that this is the sole responsibility of the recruitment team that was headed by John Stephenson who is still being paid until end March!
