Callum Wright to Plymouth

I’m surprised by this one, I must admit. Seemed to by highly thought of by Leicester supporters, although has struggled to make an impact…
Another one for Appletons unique approach to developing our players BFster 😉

A total nonsense!

Not Championship ready but I thought he could have been one for the future especially if we do get relegated. Hope it doesn't come back to haunt us.

Not sure how people are spinning this negatively: recruitment team are building a war chest for more of what we need.

This lad looked to have some technical ability but was lightweight to say the least. Has barely got a look in when we have 9 injured and struggling.

Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s 1 or 2 more ‘surprise’ departures to fix the shitshow that was this Summer.

Maybe the Owen Dale move is off so we needed the 500k for the kitty, ybf Dale would prob make more of an impact off the bench this season

I think it’s becoming increasingly apparent that there wasn’t exactly a ‘meeting of minds’ between AppoDog and the previous recruitment team…

You do start to wonder how much of it is players not being good enough or manager being awkward.

Quotes from the player and Appleton just four months ago:
On joining Blackpool, Callum Wright said:

“I’m buzzing to be here and excited to get started. I’m a player who likes to create, score goals, get stuck in and work hard. I just want to make an impact on the pitch. I’ve tested myself over the last few years at Cheltenham and the next step is the Championship. I just want to hit the ground running.”

Head Coach Michael Appleton added:

“Callum is a player that I’ve known for a while because Leicester took him in during the time I was there. He’s had a fantastic loan at Cheltenham and shown great pedigree in various positions, scoring the goals and providing the assists he did last season. He’s ready to be challenged and step up to the next level. I’m delighted that we’re giving him the opportunity to do that.”

On a 3+1 deal too. And I’d have thought a player Appleton wanted.
Bizarre, and as others have said, shows the recruitment ‘strategy’ hasn’t been great.

It’s just a bit annoying isn’t it, how aren’t we bringing quality in before we let fringe players go?

he didn’t look like a central midfield player to me,If I was playing three behind a striker I would’ve played him in a wide position of those three behind because he looks like he can run at a defender and his crossing looked very good to me aswell. If Plymouth have a big man upfront on their books he will like some of those high deep crosses into the back post.

Good.

Passer-by who, unfortunately, wasn’t good enough at this level. Whether that be technical ability or how light weight he was, I’m unsure.
He just isn’t the player we need at this moment in time. We are short of the big lads and ball winners. We were possibly right club for him just wrong time.

The Prem is an easier place than the Championship to cut your teeth. You get time and space …….until you to within shooting distance of goal, where you run into a brick wall. In Div.2 ( old money), they flatten you on the halfway line. Wright, Poveda and Patino have learned that the hard way. They will, all 3, be better for it.
I don't see many players getting time and space when I watch the Premier League!!
Is this a bit of a football myth/excuse?

My lasting memory of him will be when he tried a spectacular volley at bloomfield road and it went spinning straight in the air off his shin. Possibly the worst shot I've seen at home since Marcus bean volleyed one over the North stand

It also highlights it’s now one permanent signing this season and he’s not a regular.

Shows you how difficult it is or we’ve made it to get the quality required to effect the starting 11 on our budget in this League.

Maybe these Coventry guys have a better idea.
I expected him to see him go this window but not on a permanent.

Says on Plymouth site they were after him last summer so they've got their man in the end if true. Wonder if they made a cost saving on it, going through us instead of Leicester.

Maybe by the end of the window we'll be looking back on some of the moves made similar to when they moved out Robson & Williams for Dougall & Stewart after only a few months and when those two became available.

It's busier than I thought it would be already!

Would have expected a loan, but maybe he was tired of being loaned out and wants to play regularly for his home club?

Maybe a sell on clause if he does indeed flourish in league 1

Callum Wright has not been a regular starter even when we have been down to the bear bones in midfield. He looks lightweight for the Championship to me and he has quickly become a fringe player who is unlikely to change the course of a game. Appleton knew Callum Wright when he was coaching at Leicester and still has contacts there plus he gets to see Callum Wright in training every day. I think this transfer is good for all parties especially as Wright was on a 3+1 contract and probably one of our higher wage earners as well. Timing isn’t perfect and this transfer puts further pressure on the Recruitmrnt team and Ben to bring in more new players very early in this transfer window which IMO is no bad thing.

Jesus, summer recruitment really was piss poor wasn’t it.

Thing is we’ve done this before with Jordan Williams, at least he was free and we got a few for him.
We’ve either made a profit on Callum Wrong or he was seriously shit in training. Even more so than the games.

Bizarre. At least the board are rectifying errors at the first opportunity.

I’ve called Grayson 2020 vibes and it’s looking like we’re on for it again 😊

£5400 a week allegedly.

I’m waiting for Pasty Muncher to provide his views on this fastball!
Argyle go a lot on data analytics these days to identify young players that they can develop & sell on for profit. In the last couple of days they've signed young uns from Norwich & New Zealand. I hope their data analytic computer suddenly hasn't got a virus with Callum but I suppose their recruitment policy this year has worked out well for this season.
If Callum does half as well as Hardie then us Greens will be happy 😀

Might be a better set up and level for him to get going in his career at the moment. The shape your gaffer has you set up as he should be able to find him a role in one of the number 10 positions without exposing the midfield. I think you've just lost a lad back to Swansea who did a similar job.

Well I think you’ve got a great signing. I’ve no clue what we are playing at dealing him after 4 months! We’ve lost the plot.

Said all along he was shit and not Championship quality. At least the club appear to trying to rectifying things.

In Wright’s defence, he might do ok with better players around him.

Appleton knew him and obviously approved his signing, for me he looked lightweight and slow, and with the other midfielders that Appleton recruited being lightweight and Bridcutt injury-prone, it is clear that Appleton's player recruitment and judgment are clearly lacking. Hopefully, the new recruitment team from Coventry will now be in charge of recruiting new players, and Appleton can be left to do what he does best, standing motionless and quiet on the touchline.

Yes it appears he's replacing Whittaker who's gone back to Swansea so they can sell him....he'd be a cracking signing for you lot if you can afford him

You won't find much data analysis from his time here PM!

This transfer really does show what an absolute shit show it was over the summer. CW feels like the last loaf left on the shelf and a panic buy given Bowler left and we couldn't get any decent midfielder to sign.

Really didn't expect that... to the extent that I read the club site and still thought he'd been loaned out until I got to avftt and learnt he'd actually been fully sold on!!!??

Crazy. Only hope we returned our investment in him. Never looked a proper player for us at all.

Got to agree. Looked lightweight and if a mistake was made best to correct it. From what little I saw him and I was at WBA he wasn’t at the races. Men against a boy comes to mind.
We need a destroyer with a pass to complete our midfield.
If Bowler appears then I go into the second half in Appy mood.
Oh Grimshaw in goal of course

Reading the above comments from many BFC supporters regarding C Wright it struck me that SS knows exactly what is required to purchase the relevant players to give our manager a chance to move the club further up the league table. This as everyone on here will know is going to cost a
lot more money to aquire the quality of player needed. Situations in football change fast going for player 'A' as apposed to player 'B' as we know can be thousands of ££££s more. Is it not time to back off & support the club the board and Simon in all there trying to achieve and stop all this criticism and negative opinions.

I think we need to wait and see how results go first before we all accept all is well and we've avoided relegation.
