Not at all.

I was simply highlighting that the anti-democratic EU has very wide powers to make and vary laws and act in other policy areas whereas the monarchy has little to none.

I'm surprised that you weren't able to understand that.
Oh I understood it alright. Straw clutching at its finest.

1. The country gets more money back from the monarchy than we spend on it.
2. They are worldwide ambassadors.
3. They are something we should take pride in and are admired around the world (especially America, ironically).
4. They do a lot of good for charities and good causes and raise the profile of key issues using their status.
5. God save the Queen and all that. 🇬🇧 👑
The affordability is not high on my list of reasons for wanting to abolish the Monarchy.

How’s the voting going, I’m quite surprised we’re 63 posts in and the usual suspects haven't rolled out the usual volley of, Jingoism, Brexiteers, Gammon, Nazi, Xenophobes, 😄

Conflicted about this.

RF seem to be a bunch of oddballs, with some using their privilege for their own good, and to pressure/control others. HM the Q seems to be a great lady, but I now question whether her duff decisions, eg staying at Balmoral when Diana died, and abusing Harry by making him walk behind the coffin, were hers or this hidden clique of men in grey suits who are actually running the monarchy.

The Heir to the throne has already spent years interfering in Government with his handwritten letters, despite this being outwith the unwritten constitution. When he becomes King, that may well be the end of it.

I totally get those who still support to the hilt, particularly those who served, with their oath to HM, I have no right to question their view.

What is the alternative , certainly has to be ceremonial only, how about David Attenborough?

We'd be doing them a favour if we scrapped the monarchy. They are trapped by the system, if must be hell on earth living like that. Let them be free.

If they want to be free that can, see Megan and Harry thread

That’s because because democracy only works when they win the vote... so let’s keep voting until the educated elite are happy, 48% should do it😁

The younger ones have brought a lot of disrepute on the family over the years.
Charles ongoing affair with Camilla throughout his relationship with Diana.
Andrew and Epstein
Harry dressing up as Hitler. And then the old man Phillip with his regular faux pas’. (He must be prime suspect for the racist allegation)
Do they really need so many residences and hangers on though?
I can see them on a path of self destruction once Elizabeth is succeeded.

The vote is a lot closer than I expected. Pro-Monarchy votes are usually up round 80%+.

No I’am no member of UKIP It just happened to be on their Facebook page and I love it. 💕
I am a very proud however of our Queen and what she represents.
What does she represent? I'm not being confrontational, I'm genuinely curious.

To me, she represents intereted privilege. She seems a reasonable person. I don't have any axe to grind with her as a human, but it seems really weird to me that we've got a very important role in the UK that you can only be born into.

That seems really odd. There's so many debates around how we recruit people for jobs and yet the top job (at least symbolically) isn't open to 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the population.

It all makes women only shortlists or whatever (best person for the job is an oft cited and valid arguement) seem positively small fry.

The queen is 'the best person' in many people's opinion and yet, she's literally born into the role. She got the job, solely because of her family history, because hundreds of years ago, prince X met princess Y at a state ball.

I appreciate the tradition angle, and the idea that it's familiar and people have an emotional bond with what they know but beyond that simple emotional attachment, I don't really understand *what* the monarchy represents.

I've just never, ever got it. I'm not arguing she's a bad person or denying she doesn't take her role seriously or show dignity or perform a function. In, fact I quite like her as she reminds me a bit of my gran. It's the underlying concept of being 'born into it' that I can't get over as I cannot fathom how she represents anything other than the idea that 'commoners' have 'betters' and ne'er the twain shall meet.

Which I don't like as it seems a sinister arguement around bloodlines and so and so on... she isn't responsible for that. It's more I don't get why many others don't see it as weird.

So have we scrapped them yet or what?

Come on you bowers and scrapers, you subserviant peasants, you spineless supporters of your chinless oppressors, grow a pair and fight for your right to equality and freedom.... Change your vote and bring down this archaic abomination 👍

GOD SAVE US

Don't understand why those who want a republic are making an issue of this now. The Queen is still very popular but she'll be dead soon. There is no way Charles will command the affection and respect people have for her majesty, more likely I can see him being deeply unpopular. I can also see Canada, Australia and New Zealand getting rid of the monarchy once Elizabeth is gone. It is also possible that this could all be happening in the middle of the break up of the UK.

If an interview with Harry and Meghan by Oprah causes the amount of kerfuffle and questions being asked about the monarchy's future then imagine what things will be like in these circumstances. If you want rid of the royals you need to bide your time.

Would you rather have a politician as Head of State (from either party) or the Monarch who has no Political power at all?
A Monarch who brings countless visitors to the country, visitors who spend loads of money in the U.K.
I can just see our current P.M. Boris as H of State, unkempt hair blowing freely in the wind (what there is of it of course). people queueing for hours just to get glimpse of him. Visitors from all over the world just here to see our leader. 🙄

Countless visitors to see the Queen? Really? What are the odds on them seeing her? Pretty remote I would have thought.

No one has queued for hours to see her other than middle aged women before a Royal Wedding, and they're already here, bring a packed lunch and flask, so contribute nothing to the economy.
