Hybrid working

After being a full on advocate of working in the office, I’ve now opted to do the hybrid thing and go in only 2 days a week.
My circs have changed, originally I lived alone and didn’t want to feel isolated 24/7.
Now I have 2 daughters living with me who work from home 3 days a week so that’s not an issue.
I feel I feel maybe have been missing a massive trick and cutting off my nose to spite my face work life balance wise.

What are your thoughts on either or any scenario ?
Any top tips for working from home ?

I do two days in the office and three at home and feel you get the best of both worlds. Just make sure you try and get out for some fresh air on your lunch break as otherwise it can be a bit bleak in the winter months. Enjoy.

I’m getting a dog in January which I have put off due to being out of the house a lot. Now me and my girls have it covered so it won’t need to be left alone and I am so looking forward to walks ( and cuddles) so that will get me out at least once a day.

Thanks for your advice 👍

I can't work from home doing my normal job, but some of the computer based stuff cold be a possibility, I don't know why I'm that bothered though as I'm only working part time these days . Personally I like to get out & would do so wherever possible if I worked at home. Getting a dog, as we did just before Covid came along, should be really gratifying for you. I can't believe how much you get attached to them & 3 years later we've not been away without him. TBH I'm not bothered if we don't go abroad ever again. Go for it 👍

I am so looking forward to getting my dog. Can’t believe how sensible I have been in waiting for the right time as sensible isn’t me , but I’m glad I’ve been patient and can’t bloody wait 👍

It got to the point where I was going in on certain days to meet the 40% quota, but sometimes I was the only one in, and spending time on Teams calls with everyone else at home.

Make sure the days you're in that the majority of the team are also in, otherwise there's absolutely no point, and all you're doing is box ticking.

I'm sure productivity is actually up for home working, as people start earlier and finish later because of the lack of a commute.

Getting a dog in lockdown was great in getting away at lunchtime rather than carrying on working with a sandwich.IMG-20220807-WA0007.jpg

I have now gone over 2.5 years without visiting the office. I really can't imagine going back in one when everything gets done online anyway.

As long as I am expected to work remotely with people in India, then I fail to see the point of driving to an office in the UK just to connect with them.

The main thing is to keep a routine, for breakfast time, getting dressed, lunch and making sure you log off at the same time each day so not to keep on working late. Keep separation between work time and home time.

Good stuff & I await a thread on doggy training tips 😃😃😃

This gives ample time to walk the dog as you've accrued it & use your mouse jiggler to keep your screen active too 😂

Beauty of a dog. I've always loved greys as pets. Superb temperament who love to sleep 22 hours

That’s a great resonating post, thank you Wiz. I spend many a Friday morning in the office alone. And other days too.

I began to feel like I was making an effort for old school traditions and with a crazy work ethic that doesn’t really exist anymore, only in my head.

I’m quite a chatterbox 😱 easily distracted and mostly the distractor so will probably save the department a good few bob.
I also need some kind of balance going forward, Always losing time to let workmen in and sort out other problems etc, meeting myself coming back and all that.
I love your dog ❤️

They were just avoiding you Wiz so they didnt have to listen to your left wing rants 😉😁

What sort of dog are you getting?

It works excellently for my job, where commission dictates my salary, and I have to work funny hours to deal with clients on different time zones.
If I was getting the same salary regardless, I think I'd get more done in the office. Less distractions and bouncing ideas off colleagues helps.

I’m thinking a beagle blood, but I do like cocker spaniels so I’m going to make my mind up after Christmas 👍
We've got a show cocker, slightly less energetic than the working ones, but needs shearing every 10 weeks. Bit of a baby, can walk all day, pretty good off his lead in the wilds, two deer ran across the path in front of us yesterday, maybe 15 feet away, he started after them, one command and he stopped ( well, I was impressed!). Very very affectionate, my wife's dog unless she's not there, then cuddles up with me, if my Goldie lets him. Has changed my view of small dogs.

It doesn't really matter what dog you get, as long as you are prepared to put the work in to train it, which from my brief knowledge of you on here, I'm sure you will. That said some are better than others which makes a bit of a lottery as you can get 2 from the same litter with totally different behaviour patterns. We had to get a dog that didn't shed (a groomer's pay check) because my wife is allergic. Choose carefully. 😃

I commuted for 20 years one hour each way. I value the extra time in the day. I find I am less self disciplined at home. Prone to getting up later and just being generally slower in things like getting ready etc. my Mrs does rather expect me to be available on her demands.

Get a rescue grey, so loving and sensitive and desperately in need of a home. Maintenance free really, they sleep and want 2no 20 min walks. If you live near the beach it's perfect as they like to do zoomies.
I don’t think it’s as easy to get a rescue dog as it used to be, or is it ?
I will check it out 👍

My two girls staged a get a dog campaign for a year, we finally gave in and we love the dog, it came over to us from Greece as was found on the streets at 3 weeks old, we know 50% of the breed, could do a DNA test to find out the full mix but probs won't bother.

Post lockdown, Lala, there are huge numbers of pets available, I have seen figures in the millions, which is terrifying. Ironically, people working from home going back to work, the opposite of your plans.

I used to volunteer at a dog rescue centre. They should check you out to see if you and your home are suitable for the dog.

I'm sure there are dozens on here who'll vouch for you!

I still see some of the dogs I rehomed. You'll love having one, and when you're taking it for a walk you'll be amazed how many more people stop and talk to you because of the dog.

Good luck.

Thanks, Lala, so far so good. Looking at booking a holiday atm for something to look forward to, given up on the Lakes too overlooked, so now in your favourite Dales.

The Greyhound Trust do a home check to make sure it's suitable for the dog's needs.

Tmoss, I watched a prog on TV about Golden Retrievers (I love them).
The guy said that You shouldn't shave right down to the skin. Apparently it's very bad for the dog.
Just a trim is best.

I do 3 at home 2 in the office. I prefer being at home. I like my home very much. I don't like the office. I am working earlier and with less distraction at home therefore am far more productive. I can also do the school run 3 days a week and can work when I return home. Previously my working day on school run days (which was 2 days a week) meant me finishing very early.

What I'm finding is that due to hybrid when I go in there are only 1 or 2 people in. 2 weeks ago I landed in the office and I was the only person in. So hybrid intends to give you a blend of home and office life - but it fails due to the days people wish to work.

Done Hybrid working for last 20 years and its been a god send.
Due to nature of my job, my projects are scattered across the UK, so can't be at each site every day and therefore I rely on my engineers to get on with the work and update me accordingly. Consequently over the years this has given me more trust, belief and confidence in leaving them alone.
As my head office is in Manchester, before lockdown, I only went in once a week and there was hardly anyone in on a Monday / Friday, yet I could hardly find a spare desk between Tues / Thursday. So dependant on distance / stage of project, I would only travel to site once or twice a week and home working became more of the norm.
I actually do more hours over the week than I would going into Manchester, however it has given me the opportunity to be there for my wife and daughter, and not miss out on all the things I could have missed.

I do 3 from home, 2 in the office. Miles more productive at home and I'd happy do all 5 at home.

Think if I had to do 5 in the office, I'd go part time.

Having a dog is a great reason to WFH!

I only bother with dressing me top half. Bo**ock naked below the waist. Just have to remember not to stand up when on camera.

Kirky has two Beagles and probably for a good reason. Beagles are pack hounds and it is usually best to have more than one to avoid separation anxiety! They do need a lot of exercise!
I’ve thought about getting 2 to be honest 🧐 Kirky’s 2 look ace.

We've got a mini-schnauzer/Jack Russell mix (Known as a Snack apparently 🙄 ). He's 5 now, and is brilliant with the kids, clever dog with a lovely temperament. Hates this time of year though, fireworks can fcuk right off. Ended up with him by accident off a friend as a pup, best thing to happen 👍
Edit to add, we'd both be happy if I was at home everyday.

Cheers Dave. I only ever trim her feet and belly fur, seems to fall out of its own accord (everywhere as you know!!). The Spaniel, though, just grows without shedding much, so needs a trim.
