Hull City v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 16.01.21

Plus I knew we were going to score from that corner as my bet365 win notification arrived for Yates scoring anytime just as Woodburn was placing the ball 😂

I’ve resigned myself to mid table with hope to improve next year. We won’t be troubling the playoffs. That said could have been 2-1 to us but for professional fouling.

Hull deserved fuck all from that. Time wasting and going down at every opportunity. Referee was a first year pro and he fell for it.

Not sure we deserved more than a point though ourselves but i'll take it. We wasted too much time at 1-0 down passing it across the back time after time. I wouldn't mind if we were one up, but we weren't. We also wasted the free kick after the sending off, and two corners after the goal one of which when we had a spare man we had two of our own players out by the corner flag thinking of taking a short corner.

In fairness I'd have taken a point before the game, but is it a point gained, only time will tell. Need to win a few on the bounce now to keep in touch.

seemed a bit lacklustre today but a decent point all said. Hull are as bad as Gillingham, and the ref today was an absolute shocker. apparently his first season hopefully he wont get another one.

husband and turton were both caught out on the wings a number of times, Epki and Ballard were generally both solid. Lubi and Kaiaki were pretty much anonymous. Thought madine was bossing their CH's and getting no protection from the ref. we weren't really getting enough players into the box. so we pass it around and around and eventually ran into nowhere.

Hull are second and one of the fancied teams in this divsion, and we had to grind out a point against them and the ref.

Not good enough, 8 points of the play offs, second lowest scorers in the division. If we don’t string a run of 5 wins together it’s all petering out. With the backing and players available to Critchley he’s underachieving.
With a game in hand. Just been reading about the 69/70 promotion season. At the halfway point, (and we're not there yet) we were 8 points off promotion when it was 2 points for a win.

Long way to go. Taking 4 points off Hull is decent form. A win against Northampton on Tuesday and it looks even better.

Good point and a strong performance.

No idea why Turton and Husband are getting stick. We are playing away at a top team, who were competing in the Championship. Good pacy wingers often get the better of even the best full backs. Turton was very good first half, and their goal was fortunate In the way it found the scorer.

Our weakness was clearly wide midfield, where Lubala and Kaikai just don‘t offer enough, going forward and defensively. It’s like playing with 9 at times. Without CJ, I’d try Gabriel and Mitchell in those positions. Both like to go at players, which we need, as at times we have possession without purpose.

Ward did well, we missed him in the middle when he was pushed wide.

You don't know he was about to score at all. If he'd shot he might have put it wide, the keeper might have saved it. Don't make things up. He stopped a goal scoring opportunity that's why he was sent off, he didn't stop a goal.
No more or less than any other team including ourselves would of done. Would he of scored, no one knows.

He put Gabriel and Garbutt on to stretch the play against Hull’s 10 men. Both of them are more attacking than Turton and Husband.

Quite an obvious tactical switch to make in the circumstances if you ask me.
Part of my point is that better quality full backs would offer you that anyway, instead of an hour's worth of cutting back inside and wasting momentum - let alone allowing yourself to get constantly done on the outside. Think of some of the fullbacks we've had in the past. We need to improve and be stable in these positions to really step on.

I'll take a point as we started the game with 10 men, Kaikai should be lucky to start on the bench but for some bizarre reason, Critchley sticks by him. The guy does not seem interested in the slightest and somebody else has to be given a chance in that position, namely Mitchell. Maybe he's not as good a player as a fully focused Kaikai ( neither is Kaikai at this moment in time ) but he'll get involved in the game and give his all which is more than Kaikai is prepared to do.

No doubt Kaikai starts on Tuesday !

You shouldn't be having to sub both your full backs. They should be secure positions in a settled side. I don't think Critch quite trusts any of them enough. We need to sort these positions out as it's costing us.
Both are out of contract in Summer but I would be surprised if we do not keep at least 1. They are both OK L1 defenders and Husband did play in Championship.
I am not convinced we would get better under the new Squad limit of 2.5 million gbp.
If we get promoted different ball game.

In my opinion:
Both teams cancelled each other out although Hull were generally faster and stronger than us.
Overall the team played well against a team looking for auto promotion.
Four points from Hull is a good job done.

I think we are sound and progressing.

1. We are unlikely to be relegated.
2. We may get into the play-offs.

Looking forward to our next game.

The thing is though, how good is a top 6 team in League 1 given how bad Hull were and they were second!!
Yes, a good point but I just feel that by this stage of the season, any team that wants to be in the play-offs or higher, has to be a team that looks like theycould survive at the next level. Hull looked a bit that way today, we didn't.

What?????? I would put my money on Woodburn scoring there. Not making things up 🙄

Very decent point. However, the overall performance was poor even though we battled more I think in the second half. It was miles away from our performance in the home game, and it worries me if we're so reliant on Hamilton to win games.

The full backs offer little in an attacking sense, the midfield is good at battling but not very good at supporting the forwards, and the wingers are ineffective although their service, along with the service to Yates and Madine, is really not good enough. Madine was a presence but it rarely drops for us. Good to see Yates get on the score sheet again, and he was alert enough to nick the ball and get through on goal. Despite our scoring problems, I don't lay the blame really at those two because they feed off scraps and have done all season. Our lack of goals is a team problem.

But that was a gift of a point, much like how we gifted Lincoln the points earlier in the season. I really hope Critchley drops the view that we have enough attacking option, because the facts and evidence do not support that viewpoint at all.

That's a good result against promotion favourites - we finished stronger
We now have three very winnable league games in January, win those three and suddenly we are world beaters again.
I like what Critchley is doing, I like the multiple subs , it certainly gave us something.
Positives for me; Woodburn's best game for us, Madine again, Ward had a good game
Negatives, Husband - outpaced for the goal always has a mistake in him, Lubala not good, Virtue anonymous
But I am liking what I see, Critchley seems to be making better decisions and the substitutions today did change the game in our favour.

Hamilton returning combined with some quality additions and there is no reason we can push towards the end of the season.

At the minute though this current squad is slightly lacking and will finish mid-table otherwise unfortunately.

They certainly did on the snidey gamesmanship front. Sometimes we look a bit naive by comparison to other teams that are full of niggle and constantly conning the ref. I kind of like our purity of spirit though 🤣

Exactly this

Probably the most balanced and accurate post we'll get this evening. I was hoping for more from Virtue but he was being played too deep. I wonder if the conservatism comes from Critchley?

I agree, we're a still a work in progress and a long way off being capable of consistently putting performances & results together in order to make up however many points behind the top 6 we are. We still need a few players of real quality who are difference makers.

performance wasnt pleasing on the eye but a point here is not too shabby.
I think critch has had enough time to know which players are driftwood and need shipping out.
If he really thinks we can make it to the play offs...some midfield creativety is needed and a proven goalscorer is a must.
nothing wrong with the 442 system....just some of the personal hes brought in are just not up to it.

hull playng like that in the championship would be a bottom six side. outside of the wingers being able to turn our full backs i would say we matched if not bettered them in most departments. the game was scrappy, hull are a cynical cheating bunch of (put appropriate word here) and the ref didnt help with some truly appalling decisions.

Good post Potts. I didn't know the ref was a newbie.

I said at start I would be happy with a point. Now bottom half but as good a run in at end of season as we could hope for

A decent point but if we want to challenge a top 6 we need to do better, still not scoring enough. Really need CJ back, lose Woodburn (sorry), Bez Lubala needs to produce more and need a couple of quality Jan signings, who can make a real difference. Otherwise it’s mid table and rebuild again for next season.
