"Couple of irons in the fire"

I also think Robson is better than his recent showings have demonstrated. Ward and Dougall have forged a decent working relationship and Robson has struggled when he’s come in.

Cant understand this let Robson go scenario. Few weeks ago we were singing his praises, saying how good he is and what a mistake Sunderland made letting him go.
What’s he done for anyone to sing his praises? One pass against Portsmouth and a goal against Leeds youth team?

is he dislodging Ward Virtue or Dougall?

We have a salary cap and a squad cap
Coming in next year. We have numerous central midfielders but only two strikers.

The caps are going to be the new reality. Can’t have bloated squads with players not even making the bench.

I think it's that he's not really moved on from looking 'promising' - that promise hasn't manifested itself in goals or assists. I think a lot of people, myself included thought 'he'll be great when he gets a proper midfielder next to him' - we brought in Dougall and he's not really looked any different.

I would keep an open mind on him tbh, I think he still could come good but he's not proven himself better than Ward, certainly not Dougall and to my mind Virtue either so there is a question mark over him.

He looks classier than Virtue but Virtue actually has a shot and influences games. Robson seems to mostly pass short and buzz about a lot, offloading it to the side and sometimes making daft tackles.

What frustrates is there is more there, it just doesn't show enough. I really liked him on first sight. He's one with something to prove I think. Virtue is the opposite. I thought he looked shite when I first saw him and he won me over.

Robson had one poor game (amongst many good ones) and hasn’t played since. Many on here can only seem to remember the last 2-3 games

I certainly can and I agree to an extent but point to the moments where in those good games where he's set up or scored a goal?

Ultimately, Ward has contributed more goals and key passes and Virtue has a record with us that suggests he may do so too.

That's the issue. Robson is a very tidy looking player but he's rarely made a decisive looking run, pass or shot. As Dougall is nailed on starter, his partner has to be a contrast and Robson has done well in tackling and passing it simply. Which is what Dougall does. Robson was nailed on until Dougall came but now, he doesn't get in as he's not enough of a contrast.

That's the issue. Not that he's shite. He's clearly, clearly not. He's just not claimed a place above the other options. I hope he does as I think he's got a lot of ability and my frustration is that it feels like there's a more expressive player in there if he can just play with his head up a bit more and be more aware of the whole pitch.

If you played an attacking mid, I think Robson and Dougall would work, but we don't.

Robson should be ahead of Virtue in the pecking order for sure. Then I think it depends on the opposition when picking Robson/Ward. Robson has an eye for a pass so he’d be better against lower opposition, and Ward puts himself about more so he’s better in the big games as proved against West Brom.

Good assessment. 👍

I agree there's lots to think about. Thorniley, Sarkic and Howe must be favourites to be released.
Not sure why Williams fell out of favour so quickly and I'm guessing he's one of the current Covid victims.
Sullay is the biggest disappointment and seems to be currently completely lacking in confidence. What has happened to his directness???
Robson is a good player and he's Dougall's back up and Virtue is Ward's.
I'm not an Anderson fan but sadly we don't need to worry about him for a while.
So I'd be satisfied with a goal-scoring speedy right footed winger and another striker to challenge Madine and Yates.
I've forgotten what Andersons injury is, any idea.

I really like the comment that Virtue looked shite and has won people over. That’s how I feel about him. I think Robson is one that we can develop in a winning team but not so much in a stuttering one that we have at the moment. Dougall is much better it has to be said. Robson/Virtue is better balanced than Robson/Dougall

A midfield general and a defence marshalling centre half. If we need three, a goal poaching centre forward.

Time to pull out a few of those pokers Neil and pray Ballard if fit for Saturday or it could be a cricket score.

A cricket score...hardly. They have a massive game against Fulham 4 days later so I doubt they will have a strong side out.
