Wildlife photo of the year

Breathtaking picture but does anyone else see that as a sad picture in the way the ice caps are melting at an alarming rate and Polar bears are becoming more and more land based and coming face to face with humans.

The polar bears primary food are seals and no ice shelf’s means the seals aren’t breeding on them hence the Polar bears are being driven ashore because they are starving to death.

My elder brother lives in Canada has done for 40 years and he tells me it’s a regular occurrence these days in the northern reaches of Hudson Bay many Polar bears are having to be tranquillised and airlifted hundreds of miles away to free them of human contact and the reason? Hudson Bay doesn’t always freeze over these days during the winter so spending months out on the ice feeding on seals is no longer the normal so instead they roam around towns and villagers scavenging for food and suddenly becoming a threat to humans and pets.
In some cases although rare some bears unfortunately have to be killed as suddenly rolling up at your house many are shot by residents in panic.

So sad.

It's a truly wonderful photograph that tugs at the heart strings and although a real "awwww" moment when you first see it, it is indeed a real message of the danger the planet is in, beautiful and so sad.

Actually this one is the people's choice winner Mates. Done on a public vote👍. We attended the exhibition of all the photographs at the natural history museum last month, as we have done for several years. The standard is staggering and some of the images sickening. For instance in the USA they have a rule that certain predators such as bobcats can be killed without any controls. There are images of a festival of killing in the US that would begger belief, except of course that it's America we are talking about.

But then there’s New Zealand where everyone is supposed to be nice

Better not mention the slaughter of thousands of pilot whales and dolphins that still occurs each year in the Faeroe Islands.
But then I just did.
