What music genre

do you feel fits with your natural persona? Or just personal taste ? And examples ?

And what is definitely not your genre ?

I’m ultimately very all inclusive when it comes to music. Love a lot of music by many genres.

I used to fit in the emo bracket when I was younger, before I even challenged the why’s and wherefores of my tastes. I probably rounded myself more as I got older and needed music to regulate moods, which, as an adult, lots of us do.

Even blast a bit of Kylie now to raise the mood if that’s what’s needed.

But probably a bit emo by nature, Soft Cell replaced by the likes of London Grammar and Keane etc as time has gone by.

You ?

Not a fan of punk or heavy metal.

You ?

Punk, Ska and Reggae is what I grew up with mainly and listen/ watch bands from them genres as much as I can.
Floyd and Bowie are constants as well.
The CDs/ downloads I've purchased in the last month or so include new stuff by Suede, Two Door Cinema Club, Interpol, Editors, Working Men's Club, Paul Heaton/ Jacqui Abbott and the band I'm seeing tonight at the Bootleg...LIFE.
Gigs coming up in the next 6 weeks are the above, Dirt Box Disco TV Smith, Selecter, Paul Heaton/Jacqui Abbott and Sweet plus Morecambe Punk Festival.
Morrissey last week.
I'm all over the place musically. Smiles.
When I'm pissed. I try to dance to Northern Soul.

Big fan of yodelling. When I first heard Frank Ifield in the 60's I was blown away. John Denver in the 70's yes that country boy could yodel for fun. Then during a spell as a submariner in the Swiss Navy I whiled away the hours under Lake Zurich listening to real hard core yodel legends like Melanie Oesch and Fritz Pimmelkopf👍

Best fits my persona?

Smooth jazz, the lights dimmed as strangers cast furtive glances across the smoke filled room of a hot night somewhere in the deep South, cocktails sipped gently as the tension comes close to boili...

Can't stand Jazz actually, Punk seems a bit silly and try hard, we get it, you're really rebellious.

What are The Pixies? Alt Rock? Yeah that then, I am partial to a bit of disco or 90s housey housey as well, or just lob Fat of the Land on and I'm happy.

I'm with you there Wizzer. I'll listen to most genres of music, punk probably being my favourite. I really can't stand rap though

In 1979 at 18 yrs old i went to college in Birmingham for 3 years. First time away from home and bang….an explosion of music and culture. Reggae, Ska and New Romantic were the genres I immersed myself in. The New Romantic scene was unbelievable with The Rum Runner club a place to not miss. 2Tone and UB40 paved my way into exploring reggae, dub and traditional ska which remains my favourite genre to this day. I’m up for most music and the joy it brings.

New Romantic faze was massive. You have to include the likes of Duran Duran and Japan et al in that.

I just veered a little left field of that with Soft Cell and Sioux and the Banshees etc

It's that certain kind of rap that promotes gang violence, slappin bitches etc
I can listen to other rap, Eminem, Beastie boys🤷

Agree, at his peak Eminem made some fantastic rap songs. And the Beastie Boys.
It’s the kind of angered driven rap that is just talking loudly in a stressful way that gets no validation from me.

Mainstream, my first introduction to "pop" music was stuff my mates played on their portable record players & as my father was more of a classical music/folk person I sort of missed the 60's in that sense. I've mentioned it on here before that one of the first memories of it was The Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann & I liked it, I was about 10 I'd guess, after that I'd start recording stuff off TOTP with my new state of the art compact cassette. Then came the glam rock era & anything with a catchy guitar lick seemed to do it with me. Stick your soul where the sun doesn't shine. It was very black & white for me. I still like guitar based stuff, but now I just say anything that appeals whatever genre. I'll echo the dislike of rap though.

Love my rock music, but anything really. Went to Ronnie Scot’s jazz club a few months back and saw the best band I’ve ever seen live. Love a bit of Jamiroquai too!

Early 70's child me. Alice, Bowie, Roxy, Floyd, Quo etc. Lately, played a lot of the Foo's thanks to one or two influencing friends. Smiley.
When I'm feeling mellow, bung them all on YouTube . Very happy time of my life.

Unfortunately Lytham, to the best of my knowledge, there is only one colour of people who do the violence type rap more than others.
In the walking on eggshells environment of avftt, where everything is analysed, I didn't like putting black rap with fear of yet again being accused of being a racist. 🙄

Almost anything from blues, through rock, punk, new wave, new romantic, disco, ska, reggae, electro, some dance music in the right context some opera, a lot of classical appeals. It's easier to state what I don't like, the vast majority of folk music particularly the traditional stuff, most jazz, and most of all, ** chamber music, all self indulgent self reverential shisser

Lots of different sorts for me, roots, folk, country, good pop music, singer songwriters, world music.

Not much of a jazz fan “all the wrong notes, and not necessarily in the right order”.

Beatles, Motown, some punk, Jethro Tull, some blues, some folk, some pop. The fact is, when you get to my age - our age, for lots on here - there's lots to like and lots to ignore.

Rock and Indie most certainly bands such as the Stones, Floyd, Joy Division and Simple Minds. Always loathed country and western music just feel no connection with it at all.

I was introduced to a shop called Oasis in The Bull Ring. This place was like nothing I’d ever seen with all music culture clothing. The Rum Runner Club was a visual feast of costumes including people in full Chinese Warrior outfit complete with flags dancing to Visage, Ultravox, Japan, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet. I purchased the Errol Flynn look, white baggy Errol Flynn shirt, black shiney trousers that came out really wide from the knee then tapering back in at the ankle, red cummerbund and red slip on shoes….added a bit of eye liner and that was my New Romantic phase. The only other time I consciously bought music fashion clothing was age 12….Bay City Rollers keks, star jumper with wide collar and platform boots with stars on from Polish Joe’s.

You sound fun 👍

Favourite is probably Folk / Celtic Folk, but I all sorts from Classical to Drum and Bass.😂

Dislike R&B I’m afraid 👎👎

Eclectic but don't quite get drum and bass or "Dave" and his genre whatever it is. I like Loyle Carner and Sampha though. 6 Music , Punk ( not the American shit), Northern Soul, Motown,

I absolutely don't get Dave !!!

I think some of his songs are racist and insulting, but there you go 😳

But what is R&B? Real question. It used to be the stuff turned out by The Stones and Dr Feelgood. Latterly it's become a heavy black sound.
That’s a really good question, with varying answers I’m sure.

It probably deoends on what decade or era of R&B you are aware of.

Toni Braxton, TLC etc are my era examples of R&B.

That will be different for many I’m sure.

It's a commercial tool Lala. Originally it was American blues popped up. The Brits made it into a London rock blues vibe. These things change according to who's paying the piper.
That’s because you’re old 👍
That's because I associate with a certain era. Yes, age comes into it.
