You mean that's what you think
Firstly, without chopping and changing, we'll never ever be able to find out what our so called 'best 11' is.... So the fact is that the idea of 'playing your best starting 11' whoever that is, is a completely backward policy, that literally never allows your team the option to progress beyond, the same starting 11.
As for two up front... Fine in principle, but which two, how does that impact on this so called 'best 11' etc..?
It's all very easy, until you have to get a result....
You mentioned you’d had a few on Saturday, so maybe you missed the huge number of posts about the chopping & changing, leaving better players out and not playing 2 up top.
The point I was making is that by now, Critch should now what his best 11 is, subject to everyone being fit. Further, we beat Fulham, Blackburn and Preston with 2 up top. We have shown little threat with 1 up.
The picking of Connolly away at Swansea, Birmingham and Derby is misguided. He is not a midfielder and Kenny is different class, even on a bad day.
Gabriel was in great form, outstanding really, full of positivity in his play and adding value to the wingers, but he’s been benched.
We’ve not scored in an age, yet we persist with 1 up. He drops Jerry, a class striker, because Jerry can’t do his job with 1 up and without service. It is the same playing Madine or Lavery alone and isolated.
I’m not saying that any of us knows better than Critch, but I adopt the above approach in my coaching. I know the players I have and what works best, and that consistency helps breed development.
To answer your final point, it’s his job to get results and we as fans will have opinions on how that’s going.
I think Critch is trying to keep everyone happy, and Connolly is a great example of that - 3rd choice RB so slotted in midfield. Bring him on if needed, but don’t start him. I also think Critch got to 27 points much earlier than he (or us) thought possible. Since then his approach has been erratic, and perhaps he thought he could afford to chop & change. Personally I think he decided to consolidate, happy to pick up draws to nudge us forward, which has translated into a generally negative approach. QPR was a great example, well on top in the last 20 and he left Jerry on the bench at 1-1 in a home game.
He has my full support, he’s still learning and he’ll turn things around.
