We need a left wing back

I felt for Lyons struggling against a good opponent today. The same goes for Dale, who is a better attacker but a less good defender. The fact is though, that we need a pacy left footed wingback if we are to persist with this formation. Trouble is, if we signed one, Critchley would probably play him on the right 😐

CJ left, Gabriel or Lyons right makes more sense of a 3-5-2 to me but it doesn't say it in the latest copy of Pep Monthly so it's not happening.

Husband doesn't trust that pass down the left as it's all wrong-footed and slow when he looks for an option. He can't send a runner down the touchline or in behind the full back with a pass because there isn't one. Not the fault of anyone who has to play there, it's all on Critchley.

Husband's passing was woeful today. He needs a rest.

I'd stick with Dom Thompson. Natural left footer and can defend better than Dale and Lyons.

If we had a left sided centre half then he'd get a rest. It'll be his hamstrings in winter that decides that as he usually succumbs to the workload around this time of year, for three months.

Dom Thompson doesn't like crossing the halfway line as it means he's got to go back again. Ipswich fans picked that out in his L1 loan with them. And Critchley has decided against him with whatever happened in the Morecambe pre-season game. Probably temperament more than anything. He's passable at left back in a back four but that's not us this year.

Agree about Husband, if anyone could do with a rest it's him. Dom scares me though, he tends to do daft things at least once per game but maybe he's unlucky because it always seems to cost us.

The nobbers brought on a left wing back last night, Millar, on loan from Basel, 24 year old Canadian previously on Liverpool's books (so probably known to Critchley)? I thought he was really good. He scored and nearly got another identical one just after. He had all the attributes we're crying out for. Maybe we might get a couple in of his ilk in a few weeks time?

He's right footed as well when I've seen him play. Sky have shown a few of their games because Lowe seems to be their media darling.

They've had a problem with finding a pair of wing backs too but they mostly get by through hacking away and playing the percentages. Brad Potts at right wing back suits their identity. Smarmy man bun shithouse.

Why can't Husband play there? And play Casey at centre back. I don't get it.
Critchley wants a left footer in the back three to push on in support of the wonky wing back and he's the only option for it. We were linked with Elkan Baggott from Ipswich in the last window but it didn't happen.

Seems to be wedded to the idea that we're playing a 3-5-2 formation but it's not actually wing backs. It's a load of players in a passing function before wanging it at CJ to see if he can get in behind with his pace and on the off-chance he doesn't end up finding a steward with his first touch.

Responding to this and a few other posts above. Couldn't put it better myself re Potts. What a **. Not sure Husband has the ball skills or ability to beat a man but he's a strong left back. Casey should be playing at centre half, full stop. I really don't think Lyons played well today. He tried his heart out but he was at a constant disadvantage needing to find his better right foot. We created almost nothing down the left wing, maybe partly because it is uncovered territory for Dembele. who does his best stuff in that 10 and a bit position just on the right behind the front two. He is a rare Critchley tactical success - though I think that is more down to his outrageous talents than anything developed on the training ground. I'll give Critchley this, the fact that his game is now more rounded and he chases back as well as dazzling us with his attacking play.

Husband at LWB is just a lazy shout because he’s left footed. No one suggest Pennington as a RWB option, despite being a very similar player to Husband.

I’d like to see CJ left and Lyons or Gabriel RWB. Piss around swapping them mid game if needs be but CJ has played well in both positions this season, it’s about getting the other one right.

Costing them a lot of money I understand

If we play what we've got in their natural positions then we have Hamilton and Thompson covering the left and Gabriel and Lyons the right. With Dale as a wild card option for either flank. Seems obvious to me and I'm sure that Rhodes, Beesley and Joseph would thrive off the cut backs and crosses delivered more accurately and quickly with the players stronger foot.

Thompson on the left Gabriel on the right if we are to play this mind boggling formation but he won’t drop can’t trap a bag of cement Chris Hamilton and he will persist to give Connelly his starting place wherever that may be so no point in buying another

Tbf we have switched a little to a 343 which I don't mind at all as long as we have good CMs. Norburn obviously and then if Dougall goes I'd probably bring in another cos Carey, Weir, Virtue, Morgan none of whom look good enough.
As for our LWB, I reckon CJ is going to have that position when Gabriel is back to full fitness as Gabriel is easily our best RWB. Whether CJ is good enough as LWB is another story (he's not in my opinion) however Critch loves him.

I thought both wing backs didn't push forwards as much today and was wondering if it was to cover the lack of pace at the back, clearly evident against Cambridge. The manager wants a left footed player at the back, but inverts the wing backs who as the name suggests are part of the defense

I do think there is a really decent footballer in Thompson. Give him time and games and he will be as good an attacking full back as any in this division. Let him develop and he will hold his own in the Championship. All attacking full backs struggle against good attackers, non more so than Alexander Arnold who earns rave reviews.

I thought Lyons was unable to do so because Thomas roasted him for pace a couple of times early on so he spent much of the game dropping off him, scared he'd get in behind. I'd definitely have swapped him for Gabriel second half, looked obvious that he was much better suited in the circumstances.

It's bizarre how Husband has gone from Mr Reliable this season to an absolute liability costing us nearly every game.
Costing us nearly every game!!! One mistake against Northampton, can't remember anything specific against Cambridge. He's set very high standards this season, and it's a reasonable argument that he gone off the boil a bit, but to call him a liability is ridiculous. Made several interceptions and last gasp challenges yesterday and defensively pretty solid, apart from one bad back pass. He's been very good going forward this season, but yesterday he set dembele away a couple of times. With having a very right footer on the overlap it limits his options, as he gets forward, makes his forward play a bit more predictable and hence it seems hes having a bad game.

I think husband has been player of the season so far I’ve got my head around this daft formation now Neil won’t change it I’d have Gabriel Pennington Casey husband Thompson Morgan Dougall Carey Rhodes beesley if they are all fit stick with that team we might actually achieve something

More slagging off Critch as per usual
I assume you have coached at a professional level to be be able to comment as you do.

Dom played really well against FGR, but was not tested defensively. In some matches where he can play predominantly as a winger he is useful

Lyons was our weakest link yesterday. I’ve wanted to get him back in the team but he looked a yard off the pace, struggled with his crossing and made a couple of errors defensively. He lacked conviction going forward as well. Hopefully with a few games he’ll improve because he was good last season.

What we need are fans that do not think they are better than a very Professional and extremely capable Head Coach.

That Thomas for me was the best player on the pitch in the first half both going forward and defending. Looked a quality player. Lyons go no change out of him whole game. Second half was of course all about Dembele. Enjoyed the game yesterday, both teams looked really positive. We won it because we were more clinical up front.
