Tommy Johnson has left (post restructuring) .

Tommy Johnson

Blackpool Football Club can confirm that Tommy Johnson has left his position as Head of Recruitment.

Johnson joined the Seasiders in a very defined role in October 2019, which formed part of a setup that helped to identify, monitor and sign players for the first-team.

However, in line with John Stephenson’s appointment as Head of Football Operations and a restructuring that has followed, the 50-year-old will depart Bloomfield Road this summer to pursue other opportunities.

The Club would like to place on record its thanks to Tommy for all his efforts during his time here and wish him the very best of luck for the future.

Calderwood and now Johnson. Are we looking to bring in even better? I would guess that is what it means. If we are re-structuring then it sounds like the club have a new way forward now we are in the Championship.

New man comes in and wants to be seen to make changes. They were both probably unhappy with what was happening and jumped ship.

Time will tell whether we will be better off.

This was my thinking, new bloke comes in as head of football operations or whatever it is and begins to restructure. Maybe he's looking to put his own Head of Recruitment in who he believes is better?

If it was the old regime (we wouldn't have them anyway) it would be wages off the costs and the roles would go to the tea lady and the grounds/milk man.

Maybe I’m reading too much into the statement but where’s it’s worded that ‘he joined in a very defined role’ seems to read to me that maybe the club felt he hadn’t met certain objectives/criteria he was tasked with?

That also leaped our at me. One way of interpreting it is that his role was pretty limited and could be split between other parts of the hierarchy. Remember Tommy Johnson was only ever part time and was also head of coach development for Northern Ireland and striker coach for their national team.

Or maybe he was brought in to take us out of league one so job done!
