Thorniley to Oxford

Yep certainly a strange one. I think he really threw Critchley a curveball with his performances when he was recalled to the team. The fact it’s a loan and not a permanent suggests the management feel maybe he still has a future here and if that’s the case why not just use him anyway

After one or two wobbly performances, he didn’t put a foot wrong, and In fact put many feet in the right places at the right times. He became instrumental in that solid defensive set up after Christmas.

But you always had the feeling he wasn’t really fancied for some reason.

It’s the industry however, we’re seemingly well stocked at centre back and his wages really do need to go into a RB.

Think I would have preferred to keep him until we had signed another similar player.

I think the arrival of Richard Keogh may have pre-emtied this. For me Thornley was never a long term solution but with Casey, Keogh Gretarsson Ekpiteta plus Husband and Connolly if needed Thornley was not going to play. Although he played last season I think Critch has always been looking to move him on. We might have someone lined up as we generally do when a player moves on we will see. I also think this could be the beginning of the 'clear out' for the likes of Nuttall, Howe, Sarkic, Antwi, Holmes etc. Should be interesting to see what transpires this week.

Every credit to him for last season, he came in written off when we were depleted at the back and put in some decent displays.

Completely understand this though, we’ve got 6 CBs who are probably ahead of him now and we can get some of his wages off the books (apparently he was one of our highest earners) and frees up a space in the squad.

Antwi and Holmes are two of our most promising kids, 18/19 years old.

Did well for us but somebody had to get the chop with the incoming of Casey, Keogh and Connolly. With Thorniley included we’d have had 7 players capable of playing centre back when we’re most likely going to play 2 in our 11. Get the wages down, bet he’s on a decent chunk.

Shame, he certainly stepped up when we needed him, I can only assume they’ve got someone coming in who they consider better. If not, I’m struggling to understand the logic, but hey, I’m not a football manager.

Certainly no worse than some of the players we still have. I’m guessing it’s a case of needs must, both to make room in the squad and remove a supposedly high earner off the wage bill.

Generally speaking I can’t help but feel we’re heading into a new season, a new league, undercooked. Maybe things will change this week, or more likely by the end of the transfer window, but we need more championship quality/ proven quality players, ones that aren’t in their mid 30s

I'd like to think that Critchley & the club have done the lad a favour here - obviously NC doesn't rate him so has done the right thing and moved him on to get first team football and reinvigorate his career. In addition this also clears some wages for another player, maybe a right back!?

Anyone think a new signing , possibly a right back incoming to let thornley go
I think there is something in the offing....we have not taken up our interest in the Leicester kid and now Thonrnley has gone....previously when we let someone go its because we have something lined up. Everything the club do these days is meticulously planned so there is
a reason behind everything.

After being the butt of a lot of criticism (and I saw him at his worst playing at LB at Wycombe) Jordan came good when we needed him. For that I'll always be grateful.
I think the fact that he's gone on loan proves the theory that he was on a good wage.
Good luck Jordan.

I think it's likely this move will be made permanent in January.

Was on a decent chunk.

Would be 5th possibly 6th choice, 7th.

Marv
Casey
Keogh
Husband
Gretarsson
Connolly

Two left sided both ahead of him.

Not surprised by this news, but I thank him for his professionalism and great attitude when stepping up last season .

Should free up squad space and salary for signings in the key areas of RB and creative midfield.

Agree with AK and others above. Nothing particularly weird about it, just that there's at least five ahead of him.

Yep Jordan did well whenever he was called on, so did everyone else. The bottom line is he needs to play, he's an experienced capable pro. He can't afford to wait for several ahead of him to get injured.

And presumably we can recall if needed?

As good as Keogh will be to aid the development of the younger lads, and his experience and decision making will be crucial at times I'm sure, I would still prefer Thornley in the squad. One of the most improved players last season and could still grow some more.

Having said that, if Thorniley is a long term player, it would make sense for him to continue with regular football.

Recalls are no longer allowed!

IMO a shocker— can’t believe in the thinking behind this one - we bring in Keogh and ship Jordan out …… Keogh is obviously going to be our weak link defensive wise….cannon fodder to the young whippet’s in the Championship!!!!

Thorniley hardly the quickest is he

Jordan was integral to our end of season run in and he never let us down. However, Critch obviously thinks we can afford to let him go so that's good enough for me.
He lives around the corner from us in Warrington, where his football journey began & his dad played for Warrington Wolves. Good luck to the lad and hopefully Michael Appleton will soon be fit and healthy again to look after him.

Most improved player last season given his very shaky start when he prone to making some howlers by getting on the wrong side of an opposing player, but he sorted this out and became a steady and reliable player. He will do a good job at Oxford but we did need to make some spaces within the squad. Good luck to his loan move 👍

Not really a surprise. We need to free up space in the squad and Thorniley was clearly not one of Critchley's favourites. He did well when he came in but not really one for the future. We need Ekpiteta, Gretarsson and Casey to step up this season. That's what they were signed for. Unfortunately, we'll start with Keogh next week but the team you start with in August is often very different to the one you finish with so we'll just have to go with it in the short term.

I personally rated Thorniley higher than Ekpiteta. Certainly from watching him at the back end of last season. Marvin always makes me feel nervous, I'm not sure he is the answer at centre back, certainly in the championship. I hope I'm wrong.

No. Season long loans are as it says on the tin.

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I'm think there's usually a "get out of jail" card that can be played in the January transfer window for both parties.
Think you specifically have to put a clause in to state the option of a January recall, like West Ham did with Kemp.

Ekpiteta before his injury was in excellent form last season. A run of games and he'll be good again, he played very little at the back end of the season. Thorniley was steady but, at his best, Ekpiteta is clearly the better prospect, in my opinion.

I'm a bit disappointed to see Thorniley go tbh. I think he's a really good player in a back 3 and with the right partner, decent enough in a 2.

He's got a mistake in him, yeah, but he also had some brilliant performances. I feel like he's earned a shirt last year and thus earned a chance this.

I dunno, if you look at say, Keshi Anderson objectively, then you'd wonder if he'd done as much last year as Thorniley but there's no doubt Keshi is going to be in and around the starting line up.

I guess, ultimately, we don't need Grets, Jimmy and him, all for the lcb role.

Good luck to the lad.

Didn't let us down but his lack of pace was always a concern and he would only be more exposed at Championship level. As you move up the divisions the major change in players' is extra pace.

Thorniley was always fit and available to play. It's a useful attribute in a footballer! Until Gretarsson proves his fitness we are relying heavily on Husband.
