This formation and play style

I get the style of play Critchley wants but at what point do you admit you haven't got the players to play it?

Ekpiteta as the pivot of a ball playing back 3? He's literally made 6 or 7 major errors in 3 games. How we haven't conceded is only a testament to the poor finishing of the teams we've come up against.

Carey and Morgan creating close to fuck all.

Lavery and Beesley running like headless chickens.

Will it come good? It'll probably improve, but God help us if we have to watch this all season.

Yes you have made some good points and he is going to find out what he's got and what he needs ! Before the the end of this month ?

Agree some of that. Lavery and Beesley deserve their places in the team.

A bit harsh regards some…

Morgan and Carey had stinkers first half, but Morgan came out more during the game, and improved more so when Carey was subbed off.

The stupidity of tonight’s formation is that we’ve got 4 central midfielders yet we hardly ever saw the balls being played through there!
Too many midfielders and as a result you get 1 or 2 wandering around the pitch looking lost.

Edit: Lavery worked his socks off tonight but didn’t have one clear opportunity to score. I would say that’s down to terrible decision making in the final third. If he gets chances- he’ll score.

I see what he’s trying to do and I appreciate it, he’s trying to combine organized, pragmatism with a bit more attacking impetuous (although the latter has been missing).

Three in the midfield should in theory allow us to win more midfield battles and create more chances, but it hasn’t worked incredibly well.

The wingbacks are key and I think we won’t get going until Critchley sorts them out.

Bolton play a similar 3-5-2 formation and it’s incredibly attacking while also difficult to break down (perfect for this division IMO).

The difference is that there’s has been incredibly effective because their wingbacks have provided much more quality than ours have.

Their RWB provided two assists tonight!

Think we need to look to the market for another wingback or perhaps move Hubby to LWB and Lyons to RWB.

It might take a little while, but he deserves time to make it work.

The key to the 3-5-2 is firstly a baller in the middle of the back three, Marv is far from that because technically he is hopeless, but he is a good athlete who will win your aerial battles but please don't ask him to carry the ball and pick passes, he can't do it. Secondly two fit, mobile wing backs who can be full backs when the opposition have the ball and wingers when we have it and finally a natural number 10 creative central midfielder who can cause mayhem by popping up anywhere in that free role having two ball winning battlers in central midfield gives him.

If you try to put square pegs in round holes in any of these area's, then expect the system not to work.
