Strange rivalries

Never think of Stoke and Port Vale as rivals but the Stoke fans flew this banner over Port Vale after their relegation!

Their grounds are only about 4 or 5 miles apart, closer than us and Fleetwood.
Just had a quick Google; apparently the rivalry has been around since 1882, the biggest crowds at 50,000 while we were at our best in the 50's.

The Brighton / Crystal Palace rivalry is the one that seems odd to me.
Almost 50 miles apart, and a rivalry due to the 2 managers having a row in the 70's

THIS was pretty shit. Port Vale have never been able to compete with Stoke City.
Seemingly the pilot the.of plane was an ex Port vale player. He was disciplined
by Vale , never forgave them and bears a huge grudge against them. He took his private pilots licence so that he could fly past with the banner. Seemingly paid for by Stoke fans . Almost funny if it wasn't so nasty , twisted ,sad n bitter

I Remember them years ago being called the A23 derby like you say 50 miles is a bit far to say the least.
