Spoof detective series

Long shot here. I remember watching in the late '90's( although it could have been the' 80's maybe even the '70's)
Cant remember the name of it but it was a washed up American cop who narrated it in a sort of Raymond Chandler style.
The comedy was very dry but great late night nonsense that I watched with my dad.
Anyone out there able to jog my memory as I know this site is a veritable goldmine of useless information.
Cheers

Police Squad was a comedy with dry narration starring Leslie Nielsen .Very funny watched it regularly.

Not the one you’re thinking of but ‘The Detectives’ with Powell and Carrot was absolute class. The episode where they were trying coke and hash was superb

Agree with above posts that it sounds like Sledgehammer, Mike Hammer, or Police Squad

Other less likely possibilities might be McCloud, The Rockford Files, Magnum, Philip Marlow Private Eye (80's cover of original), Cannon, Remington Steele, Ellery Queen (had to Google the last couple)

The only scenes I can remember is where the crim. Chases the hapless detective into a small room, can't see him. As the door swings shut he's clinging onto the coat hook.
The other scene is where the detective is in a bar eating peanuts. He comments that the peanuts are not very salty and more like a string of pearls in a peanut bowl. On closer inspection.. they were.
Beginning to think I might just have had an off the scale spoof detective dream sequence or something

Sounds like Gumshoe with Albert Finney, the bingo caller who dreams of being Philip Marlowe
