School bullies (teachers)

MR Williams german teacher at highfield he literally used to thump you on the top of the head he had massive hands

Bert Leadbetter, maths teacher at Baines, enjoyed slapping 11 and 12 year olds around the head as well.

But he wasn’t just a bully. He was also a coward. It was very noticeable he didn’t try to do the same once you’d grown and reached the fifth and sixth forms.

Mr Middlemiss. Really aggressive angry prick. Thought he was really hard. Would grab you by the neck really hard.

Mr Caroll used to throw stuff at you like the board rubber and drag you out by your hair.

There was a Maths Master at B'pool GS who used to 'Rabbit punch' the lads.
Apparently he was eventually 'relieved of his duties' and took over the issue of books etc. job.
I think his name was Harrison, but could be wrong.

Middlemiss was a **. He tried to punch me once for no reason other than laughing at a joke a friend had told me. He called me out to the front of the class but I rode the punch. He slapped a lad called Michael Atkin once right across the face. How we laughed when the silly ** broke his leg on a skiing trip

I know Michael Atkin. Didnt know he'd had a slap🤣

Bert Leadbetter, maths teacher at Baines could inflict pain in a variety of ways.

Yep, only taught me for a year when was very young and I can`t remember him specifically hitting anyone, but I was apprehensive of him and was aware of a suppressed anger about him: much preferred Jock Purvis.

Leadbetter was the only teacher that I felt uncomfortable with...

Anyone on here go to St Nicks junior school?

There was a teacher called Gifford who used to swing his metal football referees whistle like a conker and aim it at the heads of any lad misbehaving 😵‍💫😖

Leadbetter was certainly a bully and there were a couple of others who were not shy in meting out physical punishment, including chemistry Frank Marsden who used bunsen burner rubber tubes or canes made from empty ink cartridges.

Williams the German teacher I seem to remember the name but I didn't do German, there was one we called Hitler (probably him)

Hinchcliffe at Highfield took pride apparently in dishing out the hardest caning's although the bugger never got me.
Mr Rothwell the squarest of teachers I've ever seen (English Lit) he had inverted sideboards that actually seemed to be shaved upwards when Noddy Holder diggers were all the rage, he hit me across the back of my head from behind & I saw stars (no doubt I was messing about & was unaware of him lurking at the back of the classroom) he'd have been sacked & probably arrested today🤬 It certainly didn't warrant such aggression. Bill Yates seemed to like dishing out the whack & I was on the receiving end a few times for nothing much, but the last one I pleaded my innocence & he actually apologised & almost became a friend. Yes I did cause a bit of smoke in the metalwork soldering iron burner but nothing serious. 😂
Mr Roberts the chain smoking Tech Drawing teacher caned a lad for farting twice & nearly me too for pissing myself laughing. I'll never forget as his remark was worthy of Oscar Wilde "once is an accident but twice is carelessness" 😂 😂

Most of the teachers at Baines showed greater respect once you reached 6 form. Bert was scary but I grew to respect him back. Not sure I did for Granny Green, Feelibot or sadistic Frankie.

Remember at Baines Primary school Thornton, there was a sadist called Taylor who used to punish children who did not pay dinner money on time, their parents might have been struggling.
Think he was ex army and had no real teaching skills, just after the war ex army were shoehorned into jobs they were unsuited for.

I had Leadbetter first and third year, Mitchell second. There was a marked difference between the two periods, he definitely mellowed. Scared stiff of him aged 11/12.

Mitchell. Would one be allowed to yank boys heads around by the hair these days? Of course not.

Ken Topham at Blackpool Grammar. Kicked and punched me down 3 flights of stairs because wore a mohair jumper!
Plus the headmaster Reverend Luft, a real **, who caned my hands viciously on my last day ever at school when I broke the glass and set off the fire alarm! Probably deserved it 😂

St Bede's in Lytham had its fair share of thugs pretending to be teachers. Dillon, Whitehead, Fuller Beswick all handy with the strap or slipper.

Think he had an inferiority complex because he was one of only two teachers without a university degree when I was there.
Rumour had it that he was kicked out of Knott End GC for entering a deliberately incorrect scorecard to win a comp. Couldn't happen to a better man.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned Bailey School in Fleetwood.
A few sadists there.
Charlie Hampson, English teacher, caned me as an 11 year old for writing with my left hand every time he saw me.
It gave me a stutter as a youngster.

I should have told my dad.

Minnie Mitchell was actually a Chemistry teacher, but we had him for Maths too. Used to forever threaten to bring his big stick tomorrow, eventually brought a wooden meter rule which he used to wack on the desk Can't say I remember him ever hitting anyone, but, as said above, that would not have been unusual at Baines then. Granny Green, who my Professor at Uni reckoned was his best teacher, was not above grabbing boys, dragging them and slapping them.

On the other thread, you probably gather we all admired Toss, but he could do some damage booting your desk, the desks were one piece chair and table.

Middle miss was a prick, we were on a school trip to Paris at this place with a massive lake , he said something to me and I gave him a load of lip back😁, he came for me but I legged it and he ended up chasing me around the lake. He couldn’t catch me to save his life . when he eve got back to where we were gathered he was too knackered to do anything, so he just threatened me

Kirkham Grammar School

There were about 4 teachers who were decent; the rest were simply violent if you mis-behaved.
In fact they revelled in it with a morbid sense of humour.
The headmaster (Mr Kennedy) was ruthless, even the teachers were intimidated by him.
