Saudi plans for football.

I read recently that Saudi Arabia want to start their own internal football league.
If they do the prices for players will go through the roof. They'll be after every good player there is.
Huge signing on fees and salaries for the players.
Money is no object to them, they think it grows on trees.
Any thoughts?

Won't affect us. Unless they want Jerry Yates.

It's already going on in our own Premiership. Note the owners of Newcastle and Man City. And maybe
soon Man Utd.
The Saudis etc have already started their take over of football.

The only Saudi Involvement is with Newcastle. The other 3 are owned by differently Gulf states, and the 3 nations don't exactly co-operate fully.

It takes decades for a league to build credibility. It's a far, far harder task than buying success for one club I'm a league.

The cost of funding a wage bill could be around £500m per club, per year. Even if the league was 10 clubs only, that is £5bn per year, year in, year out That's one help of an ongoing commitment.

I think it more likely that Saudi money will be invested here, I can’t see the world ever being overly interested in football taking place in Saudi Arabia itself.

Who knows, maybe when the figures of Saudi investment gets into the forty’s we me be in with a shout of substantial backing but if it did ever happen like that it would probably still be relative as in who’s got the richest Saudi owners.

Football is changing and not for the better imo.

They’ve had a league for decades and often paid good money for players back to buying a Brazilian for US$1mn in. The seventies, I think

Oil is no longer covering their bills and will do so even less in future, so they’re scrambling to spend their reserves to build up anything and everything else. Also the ruler wants everyone to forget that he had a critical journalist murdered and dismembered

They’re only the latest to throw money at football… as others have pointed out, China and Japan have done it in recent years, not to mention the NASL in the 70s. It either settles down and becomes a real league (Japan) or collapses under the weight of its own nonsense (the other two)

It'll just end up with a league full of has beens and mercenaries. They're not even up to the standard or the MLS in the US, that's how poor they are at the moment. It is just one massive final pay day for already mega rich players.
