Russian roulette at Xmas...

Just because the Government says you are " allowed" to meet up indoors with vulnerable relatives at Xmas, it doesn't mean it's safe. Any other time since this whole crisis began it would be considered "high risk". Personal choice - but we're not visiting my 85 year old Dad in Shropshire because of the potential consequences. Within 2 to 3 months he'll have the vaccine and I think it's worth waiting. Just curious how many AVFFTers fall each side of the bridge with this one?

Christmas should be cancelled this year, delay it until it's safe instead of this bizarrely quixotic clamor for the corporate cupidity.

Of course it's nothing to do with the economics....
I find the clamour to have Christmas offensive to people of other religions who have had to forego their own festivals, which, to be fair, probably mean more to them, than our own secular society care about the true meaning of Christmas.

Very good point Wiz 👍

Whilst I agree, I'd like to see the comparisons as actual and forecast between the relative R numbers and the like before making festival comparisons.

GET TESTED just before Christmas and SI until the results come through.

If you are clear then no problem, if not don't go.

Just what we were saying last night, tbh it’s just a self indulgent binge on the whole.

I no longer have any vulnerable relatives. I'll be seeing my Dad, who is in my bubble anyway, my Mum Step Dad and brother too.

A fair portion of the population have been trying to find loopholes in the guidelines and restrictions ever since they were implemented, these extra allowances won't change their behaviour.

Worryingly, it will definitely increase the likelihood that far more people will also behave as though the virus will be letting everyone become immune for 5 days.

Then come January when the cases & hospital admissions spike they'll be moaning again once restrictions inevitably tighten.

Well aren't you lot all brilliant....

There's people out there who've spent the whole year either working or not able to go anywhere or do anything useful when they've had holiday.
There's people who've not seen their friends and family for months or the whole year.
There's people who need a break from this all and a release of the pressure.
There's people who see Christmas as the pressure valve year in/year out, when they run out of steam and need to stop and recharge.

Just because you're able to cope and get by, doesn't mean it's the same for a lot of other people. Especially when the truth is we could be still having to adhere to a lot of restrictions well into 2021. It really shouldn't surprise you that there are people out there who just want to put on a paper hat and forget their troubles for a week.

Eat, drink and be merry as in the new year we'll have slid right to the bottom of the snake and will be back at square 1🤦‍♂️

The religious festival of Christmas obviously cannot be celebrated as those who do celebrate it would wish. Reduced and alternative arrangements will be required
The December gluttony & shopping festival could be parked and indulged at a later time.

I will be celebrating Xmas for its religious context within my bubble. As a Xian it is a very important time of the year - despite its wrong date etc....All the capitalistic/pagan/Americanized baggage that sadly is attached with it can be left to the missus to organize with Amazon et al....

Apart from going out and socialising ( cos sadly everywhere will be shut) I’ll be doing what I always do, if we’re tier 2 I’ll be going out for plenty of meals.

I'm not sure why others would be involved in you visiting another household. I wouldn't be using public transport, but that's just me.
You weren't so specific. "Just do what you think I'd best for you and yours," could conjure up all sorts of options.

Sorry GJJW, I read it differently to you. However, I don't for one minute suggest that you and yours are going to do something wrong, illegal, immoral or stupid. I'd have put a smiley face on mine (as others have suggested I should) if I'd known how to avoid the bunny rabbits and hearts stuff.

No worries pal.

Christmas is an engrained and longstanding British cultural traditon...It's a secular/pagan festival and has sod all to do with Christianity.

👏 👏
I won’t be shamed into sticking to the rules and seeing my family. None of whom are classed as vulnerable anyway.
I’ve worked as a key worker throughout this pandemic and am happy to take a pay freeze/cut as my reward.
3 of us in my Christmas Day bubble are in the same boat and also live alone. I’ll stick to the rules as I have done all year, working when it’s suited the nation and seeing my family for a day now I am allowed.

Xmas is for children, first and foremost IMO, as long as parents and kids have a good time they can face time relatives etc...
As Albert said to Harold(or was it the other way round)..” don’t you dare bring religion into xmas”..Galton & Simpson magic...😁

Christmas has nothing to do with Christianity? Ok.
Well, it's been hijacked by Christianity, but it's a Pagan celebration Yule and it's origins rest in the Winter Solstice...

Either way, it's an ingrained British Cultural tradition, so from a National perspective it ought to have a significantly higher priority than minority religious festivals. I don't think it's at all unreasonable or improper to place that priority on Christmas at all either....

RACISM
TWICE

It`s not difficult. Lots of people will get together mostly indoors and the progress we are making during the current restrictions will be quickly reversed. There will be a surge in infection rates ,great pressure again on hospitals followed by many more losing their lives. All because many have not got the sense of responsibility and self restraint to wait just a little while until the vaccines which will soon be here can lead us back to enjoying normal lives again.

It`s pathetic and reflects badly on many spineless selfish irresponsible individuals in this country.

Slight correction.

It was certainly a Pagan festival, hijacked by Christianity.

Then it was a Christian ritual, now hijacked by the secular economic system known as capitalism.

Praise be the higher and all powerful force known as consumption.

Praise be upon it.

Praise be upon it.

Many people will die I suspect because of this decision. Then in January and February people will moan about more lockdowns.
same with the football, keep fans out of stadiums until Easter.

So if you’re in tier 1 after December 2nd, you can go to a pub or restaurant providing there’s no more than six people in your group, e.g, three couples. You can do that up to December 22nd, but you can’t do that on December 23rd. If that’s correct, it doesn’t make sense.

Is there a loophole that people can use? Will they claim that their family who came to stay with them for 5 days over Christmas are from the same household and therefore can go to the pub.

I know from personal experience that many health workers are struggling with the stress and workload they’ve had to deal with. The idea that we can trade an inevitable spike in cases for a five day jolly is completely disrespectful to these people in my opinion.

Agreed, plus those who think it’s ok to spend hours, or even days over Christmas with their families, including hugging and with no social distancing and probably little effort made to sanitise surfaces and handles, may well find themselves in hospital in January.
