Reality check

No, not a thread about the result or the performance, not in a negative way, this is about the expectations of some of our supporters.

It wasn't a classic, it was pretty dull most of the time, but you have to realise that we aren't going to play 46 games and win every one, we are going to come up against teams like Exeter who had also won their last 2 games and were at home. If you think about that game we could have won it, we had the better chances and Grammy didn't have to make one save, not one!

They came out to press us back and not give us time on the ball which meant we didn't have the time on the ball we had in the last 2 games, but we also matched them and made it difficult for the. You have to give massive credit to the 3 at the back, apart from some woeful distribution, Marv is our best defender, he is a tackling and heading machine, he made some great blocks and tackles today. Hubby just works in a 3 and he never put a foot wrong, same with Casey who has matured into a real regular starter contender. Then you have Norburn in front of them and he was just outstanding today, my MOTM, he covered brilliantly, broke up play and drives the ball forward superbly. The 2 wing backs were also excellent, particularly defensively, I think CJ is going to make that his regular position and Lyons is quality, Gabriel will come back in but which one for?

I thought Carey and Morgan suffered the most from the high press today so they were never able to free up the 2 forwards which was frustrating. I like Carey but with Weir on the wings and Virtue breathing down his neck he could find himself on the bench soon.

It was also frustrating for Lav's and Beesley too, it just never really got to them and the one header Lavery got he should have done better. I thought Bees did fine, he was involved, held it up well and looked more of a player than Nombe, who looked average.

The 3 subs freshened us up and I thought Virtue looked really sharp, I'd like to see him get 90 minutes in a league game and Dale was busy and lively, not sure how much he will feature though. Kenny is okay but he is obviously the Norburn replacement if he gets injured he is only going to be on the bench at best this season but a handy sub to have.

With Joseph, Weir, Pennington, Trybull, Connolly and Gabriel not available our bench was pretty weak but they will all be available soon and I still think we need another addition or two, I wouldn't be unhappy if we snaffled Moxon on deadline day if we are going to lose Tryull and 2 or 3 others.

So all in all a decent point and we were never really in any danger and we will learn from playing against the high press. Looking forward to an Indian takeaway and a few drinks tonight.

Oh and special mention to all those who went, great turnout and magnificent support. 👏👏

Agree with most of that although wasn't impressed with CJ or Lyons tbh.

Thought Apter should have got on.

I always expected us to have a tougher game here with the circumstances, and we still showed good organisation.

Still have time to get some reinforcements in, and with 2 home games coming up, we’ll naturally be more dominant I think.

Fingers crossed for 6 more points on the board this time a week today. No reason to worry at all right now.

Playing the wing backs on the wrong side is bizarre. I'm watching Newcastle Villa and the goals have come from quick crosses that were easy for forwards to anticipate and run on to.
Playing Hamilton and Lyons on the wrong side means the forwards struggle to make the right runs because the wing backs can't deliver quickly on their natural foot.

Great OP, Exeter will be dark horses for the Playoffs this year, could’ve lost, could’ve won, a point is fair, especially away from home.

A lot to work on still, but nothing to get too worried about.

Joseph and Weir will improve us a lot especially going forward and so will the final addition we have to the forward line (which we will have).

Casey great and so was Lyons, would try Thompson at LWB and move Lyons to RWB.

No match will be easy in this league so a point away from home is good.

Agree overall although I could be a bit picky over a couple of things.
Eky is great with his head, his pace, his tackling, he's just sh1t with his feet (passing).
Hubby is another that just has an achilles heal of making a crucial mistake. He did today but got away with it.
Definitely a decent point but we need another striker, measuring above 6'2", with an eye for goal, and we're not far off.
Revelation of the 3 game season is Oliver Casey.

I thought Beesley was poor tbh. The limited times he had the ball he was strong or decisive enough.
Carey I just never notice.

Ekpiteta really shouldn’t be a ball playing defender.

Thought everyone else played well and it’s obvious we are going to be very patient this season but that is what we saw last time under NC so no big suprise.

Was a decent result against a team that looked pretty good to me in Exeter.

Decent post.

Today had me thinking a bit about our back line. I’m not saying I would drop Marv at all, but…could both Pennington and Casey play potentially- or are they same sided?

It's a dilemma over the back 3. It's looking like Penny, Eky and Casey are the best 3 but not necessarily the best combination.
I don't know the answer.

I'm guessing Joseph and Weir will replace Carey and Beesley.

Casey is a plus, Wier will make a difference but we need a player who can win us a game such as today. A striker will be the answer, Joseph may be if we can’t find an experienced one then Josh Coburn for me would be a great addition.

I really didn't have that much of an issue with today's game; yes we could have played better but we looked comfortable for most of the game, a few slips aside (it happens), and we could have won it at the end.
A clean sheet away from home is not to be sniffed at.

Considering some of the shocking starts we've had over the years, I think we're in a pretty decent place right now

Organised and committed performance. Sadly lacked any real quality and playing like that won’t threaten the top teams in this league.

I thought we struggled to work it through the pitch. When we had the ball they went 3-4-1-2 so each of our midfielders was well shadowed. The onus was on our centre backs to bring it out and they all struggled a bit with that. We will have to work on that. When we went longer in the second half Beesley did not offer a lot either. But overall perfectly reasonable. Dale showed good aggression and energy and looked a good sub for this kind of game. Our wing backs from time to time got in promising positions.

Look at the number of goal chances he denies and compare it with the number he concedes and work that one out for yourself.
PS.
It was 0-0 today.
And if their forward had buried the one on one with Grimshaw that Eki gifted him, it would've been 1 - 0 to them.

Exactly- there are things that Marv does well and unfortunately a couple of bad moments with the ball at his feet overshadow those for some spectators.

We learn from each game as the team and manager does.

Yes I’d rather try and win a game. He gets the ball and gets at people he’s busy and has great pace, we were too passive today.
NC is passive it's the way his teams play, cautious. He isn't going to change, 3 clean sheets will support his tactics, but if effective I don't give a fig.

If Eki's going to keep making f*** ups like the one he did today, I'm not sure he is one of the best 3.
Agree, he's great at defending but he's an obvious weak link when we're trying to play a passing style. Everything starts at the back and once his heads gone we often go long, which just concedes possession and we can lose control of the game.

The issue is teams know this and will target him, concentrate on marking everyone else so he gets the ball with limited options, also being central he's always going to be involved and you have to be able to pass these days.

He seems to have at least a major blunder a game and we won't win promotion gifting goals, it was fortunate they haven't cost us already thanks to last ditch defending.

It's a shame as he's good a defending and is a good character, but he needs to start passing like a footballer. But he's had tons of time to do that and hasn't improved.
