So on Saturday night my mate is going to the Stockport County Player of the Season dinner. £35, two courses, entertainment and the season's awards.
What do we get? A room full of sponsors (and I guarantee less than half would have travelled any further than Bloomfield Road this season and probably a lot have no affinity with the club), presumably free grub and a back slapping night with no real fans.
Do we not count any more? I remember attending these events when Ollie was in charge and there were plenty of fans who'd paid to get in and Matt Williams co-ordinated the whole thing and it was a really good night. But then Matt cared about the fans. I do wonder if those who organised last night's event really wanted fans there or just wanted to schmooze their Blackpool business mates so they get a few discounted nights out etc!

I work for Carlsberg and go to loads of free events which I know 'real fans' would kill for but I go for the free food and drink!

People who have put their hand in their pocket and sponsored players get invited to the awards do with a complimentary meal, I really don’t see the issue, stop trying to make one when there isn’t one. If you want to go to next years then sponsor a player. Or pay to go up into the lounge one Saturday.

Not sure that gets you an invite? We've been up 3/4 times this season and weren't invited.

I think the issue is that awards where fans are asked to vote should be attended by fans.

Isn't it about £400 these days? A lot to pay just to go to an awards night which I agree with the o/p should be open to fans (and actually the club would make a decent amount of revenue on ticket sales).

Thats how it goes I am afraid ,if you have money to splurge at the club you will be seen as a superfan. Myself what they should do is include season ticket holders .Give them a table and have a draw for the table.

It’s a sponsors event not an open fans event, it’s part of the package for spending a fair amount for sponsoring a player which I believe is a lot more than £400
I think it’s a nice touch getting a night like that for parting way with money to help the club.

Im saying if he wants to go upstairs then just go upstairs for a game for £80.

I think attending an event with sponsors and schmoozing and self praise and back slapping is the last thing I'd ever want to do. Think yourself lucky or if you want that kind of thing then stick your hand in your pocket and join in with them.

Don't think the two need to be mutually exclusive. Just been on the Stockport site and their night is both.

Unlike fans who pay to get in to matches; who pay for transport and hotels when we play away and who turn up in all weather. Is that not putting their hand in their pocket?

Yeah and you get to watch the team for that, sponsor a player and you will get to go to the end of season awards.
Yes, true but the exchange of one price for one match only tells the short term story of a commercial exchange. Being a football fan is more involved, more ingrained and more substantial than going into a baker's and buying a vanilla slice. I think the Club may be being a tad naive here - if indeed fans have been excluded from an event.

Edit: It was a sponsors night so, nothing to see here.

I was invited and I'm a massive fan and so was everyone else there. Don't compare us to grasping MPs.

How much does it cost to sponsor a player now Wiz.
£1000 plus VAT... Plus I'm a season ticket holder... Plus I go in hospitality when get the time.. A fair number of sponsors say they have season tickets and would much rather be in the stands instead of being entertained in hospitality on the match day we get freebie..

Mcg I honestly really think you need to get your facts right fella. This was a sponsors dinner for all club sponsors and official partners plus players sponsors too.

You would really struggle getting any more people in there with 300 plus in the room!

The club then did the awards as part of the nights so it wasn’t actually sold as an Awards Evening it just so happened they tagged into the event!

Not sure the last time they did one?
But for the future it would probably need a bigger venue in the town that's fit for purpose.

What I will say as a business player sponsor myself it was such a great night
a positive one as we are currently 4 wins on the bounce had great performance on Saturday and still within a chance of making the playoffs… So you know all these local businesses in attendance are massive fans of the club so I don't get what’s wrong with the club thanking everyone for their support, I think personally it's a nice touch if you ask me!
