Question for the techies

I have a 2013 laptop that I only use a couple of times a month to access iTunes or download something onto a USB drive. I have avast free virus software plus cc cleaner free installed. It takes forever to boot up and is very slow when trying to do anything.

What's the best way to speed it up? What software is available to help with this & is it something a non techie like myself can do?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

The problem may be the age and software.

the software today is designed to work with more powerful machines.

It may be time to replace - sorry.

OK. Done this a few times recently.... Buy an SSD drive clone the OS and maybe upgrade Ram to 8gb

A 240gb Western Digital SSD from Scan @ Bolton is about £35 and an additional 4gb ram about £20
This will speed it up massively.... No matter what the base spec

Agree.

But one simple thing which might help, is to reduce the number of programs which automatically run at start up.

You'll have to Google how to do that for your operating system.

My wife said we should buy a new one recently, using the overtime money we are currently earning. I'm reluctant to buy a new one, as we hardly use it now we have tablets & phones.

Thanks. Will look into this option.

before you spend any money try don k lashers suggestion then download iobit advanced system care (it,s free) use that see if you get any improvement

I agree I'd do that too. Then do the SSD upgrade.... You could also sell your old hard drive (after formatting and cleaning it) should get a few quid towards the SSD

DangerMouse is spot on....There is so much c##p sitting on your laptop the CC Cleaner just wont get rid of.
iObit or AVG Tune Up (both Freemium options) will clear up the system and return it to a decent speed.
Both of the above offer a superior paid service...you can always find a serial key on YouTube for iObit that unlocks for free
I use AVG Tune Up and it's brilliant....I got a 12 month key (£79.99) for £1.00 off eBay....and got the full AVG (anti virus/sequrity) free with it.
Automatically runs once a week and the laptop boots up in milliseconds and runs like a dream....all for £1

P.S....The seller I got my AVG key also had a 12 month Premium Spotify key for £2........Saved me £80+ this year

My main job next weekend is to gather all my old mobiles, digital cameras, memory cards and transfer all my photos to my new Dell XPS lappy that should arrive midweek. A big task given my 2 old laptops are painfully slow!

The XPS seem to have solid drive faults - we buy then for our work - and must have replaced 10 unrecoverable hard drives.

Back then up!!!!

As a 'techie' that doesnt like buying new stuff that laptop is quite modern by some of my standards 😂.

I do have 4 or 5 though tbf.

As stated by limechase & possibly the best suggestion. Upgrade ram & hdd to an ssd if you can & it will be fine for 99% of joe public.
You only really need newer ones with more power if you have to run more up to date intensive software.,

Definitely not worth buying a new one just for itunes. You could even run an older version of itunes if you want/need. A fresh install of an operating system makes a huge difference. If you can combine that with more ram & ssd you will be laughing.
However as others have said cleaning up your system may suffice especially if you arent able to upgrade hdd/ram
If you need any assistance post the exact make & model of your laptop .

Thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to do that. Seems a wide view on reviews of ultrabooks, waivered between the XPS, Dragonfly and Spectre but eventually went for the Dell.
