Obsolete things

I know this won’t get a ton because it’s hard to remember the random things that you don’t miss.

But thinking back to the norms that now seem like a distant daft memory….

I’ll start with the ‘choke’ on a car. Like I had an escort mk2 in 1989, no-one ever explained the science of the choke to me, so I just pulled it out and hoped for the best. I’d heard rumours of flooding the engine but had no guidance on the right amount of pulling before ignition 🤣

And the immersion heater before you could have a bath ?

At the top of my road in the 70’s we had cigarette and chocolate vending machines in the street !

The contents would last 2 minutes these days without getting wrenched open and stolen. Yet they didnt back then !

And some say society and it’s morals haven’t changed 🧐😱

No I need the VHS recorder as I sell ( occasionally now everyone is skint) VHS tapes of old films/ documentaries on the Internet and I need the recorder to test if they are working properly . Landline internet I find is more reliable than mobile so that's why I keep it though most of my phone calls are on my mobile.
At the end of the day it’s personal preference isn’t it 👍
I would love it if there was still a chocolate vending machine at the top of my road 🤣
Not all progress is good.

Rag n bone man …with give away goldfish
Milk float… miss that for some reason…
I loved the rag and bone man. Even the milk man ! Dennis the Unigate milkman used to let us ride on his float ! Wouldn't be allowed these days for so many reasons 😱

He smoked a pipe on his deliveries, and a pipe, that’s another one.

My parents had a Guest house in Gynn Square and I loved when the Corona pop lorry delivered…crates of them…quite a lot were guzzled by me 😀

Good old clubcall !

The power of t’internet has done away of spending a small fortune on long winded phone calls trying to find out any info.
Murder on transfer deadline days , as it took ages before you got to know who we’d signed.

The pools, Littlewoods and the other one, think it began with a Z….Zetters?

Had to give my dad random numbers each week and then take it to the Pools man whose house always smelt of bacon 🙃

The choke was just a plate controlled by the wire that went to the dash, when pulled out it blocked off the barrel to the carb and restricted the air going in to so more petrol went in, the car would run rich with fuel which an engine needs to fire when colder, flooding it meant that you kept it open so too much petrol went in when the car was warm and wouldn't burn off. Simple design but it usually worked ok.

Completely redundant after electronic ignition took over from a carb, it does it all for you. Carbs were an almighty pain in the arse sometimes but you had much more control than with electronic ignition.
