Michael Smith is a great shout btw - just checked out wiki
Shame about Layton because it has always been the centre of the Fylde Coast universe but an interesting website here on LyonsSwallow Sidecars,m the original starter of Jaguar, was first based on Field St/Henry St corner.
William Swallow started there. Not North Shore, or even Layton.
I was born in PLF but at home, as was my younger sister, we were both born about a mile away from The Vic in Staining Road End strangely but then my mum was a bit odd and refused to go to hospital to give birth, my older brother was though at Glenroyd. In terms of worldwide impact and maybe even wealth accumulation its probably Andy summers from the police, who was apparently born in Poulton which is weird, i lived there for ages and everyone I ever knew there was born at blackpool Vic or glenroyd?.. something like that.
Robert Smith lived on the same road as my grandad lived in bispham apparently. But only till he was about 3 or something, I accosted him for about 30 seconds once and mentioned blackpool after a concert he did here in Portland, Oregon. i got the impression he def doesnât consider himself from blackpool, barely remembers it. Grew up in Suffolk or something.
but talent is relative so itâs hard to say, if you were a water polo officianado and blackpool happened to have the greatest ever proponent of the sport you may consider them the most talented, where as a laymen would be thinking âwho has allowed this idiot to ride a horse in a swimming poolâ
Born in Preston.John Inman has to be in with a shout.
PoultonOK, down the road a bit but what about Andy Summers of the Police - from Carleton I believe.
I saw John Inman in the baggage area at Luton Airport many years ago.Born in Preston.
The cods won't like it if you are trying to claim Alfie Boe comes from BlackpoolAlfie Boe.
BH, maybe he took the 13 y.o. and went to Palatine? Same age as me.He went to Claremont Dave.
Just checked on You Tube when he was on This your Life.BH, maybe he took the 13 y.o. and went to Palatine? Same age as me.
He didn't deny it. I see he died with hepatitis B.
Although born in London Freddie Parrot face Davies used to live on Warbreck hill road used to deliver papers to his house as a nipper tight as as ducks arse when it came to compliments of the season. When I went to Warbreck they had a pic of him on the wall and said he went there as with Tony Hart the childrens TV artist. Dont think they went to the 'new' Warbreck but one of the old schools that formed Warbreck. Think Inman lived on Links Rd for a while and a TV weatherman lived on Holly Rd. What about Lord Mountbatton,he used to be one of my FY2 neighbours,he stopped at the Knowle for summer vacations.
Good list L. However; not so long ago, Coleen Nolan slagged Blackpool off and therefore doesn't merit such high status. Not forgetting Zoe Ball,
- David Thewlis. ...
- Coleen Nolan. ...
- Chris Lowe (Pet Shop Boys) ...
- Jenna-Louise Coleman.
Totally agree Pete. I think I am right in saying that Sir John Bickerstaffe was also the man behind the funding / building of the tower. This has to put him ahead of nearly all the rest.In terms of talent coming out of Blackpool that has been recognised internationally then I think Michael Smith comes out top.
In terms of talent and contribution that came from Blackpool and contributed that to Blackpool then it must be Sir John Bickerstaffe, who was born in Caunce Square, near what is now Hounds Hill. He oversaw the transformation of Blackpool from not much more that an agricultural and fishing settlement in the mid 1850s to the premier seaside resort by the 1930s, when he died. He was chairman of the water board for over 20 years, was alderman and mayor, was a hotel owner and had the vision for the Tower, chairing the board which raised the money to construct it. He was also led other developments in the town.
He was in the same years as my cousin at BGS.Alistair Cooke, probably only known by the older generation for many years broadcast Letter From America on the radio .
Although born in Manchester the family moved to Blackpool when he was very young where he attended BGS before going on to Uni.
His broadcast from the States was over a period of some 50 years on a weekly basis.
I knew his nephew, before he too crossed the pond to live in Canada.
Lived on Banks St at one time. Got a mention when he was on This is your life.I saw John Inman in the baggage area at Luton Airport many years ago.
I went up to him and said 'I hope you don't mine talking to you, but I think we were in the same year at Palatine'.
He said 'I don't mind at all, I'll talk to anyone'. We had a brief discussion about the school etc. He did go to Palatine so he must have
lived in Blackpool from an early age.
His Mum worked at Norcross. The brother of Ian Hunter of 'Mott the Hoople' lived in Anchorsholme.
He was a friend of mine at Prebonds (not Ian his brother). He played Goal keeper for HeyhousesFC teams.
Hunter isn't his real surname, apparently it's their mothers maiden name.
Dad worked at Warbreck in the Post Room if I remember correctly. His Mum worked at Norcross.
BH, maybe he took the 13 y.o. and went to Palatine? Same age as me.
He didn't deny it. I see he died with hepatitis B.
Wiz, he was engaged to my Aunt for a few years, and she was really miffed when she didn't get invited to This Is Your Life. She put it down to the fact it would have gone against the grain of his camp/gay persona.Lived on Banks St at one time. Got a mention when he was on This is your life.
Professional Scouser Ricky Tomlinson - actually born in Bispham.
