o/t Driving and Cars

Anyone not been behind the wheel for the last month?! Had no need to and the car has been sat (sparkling clean) on the drive since lockdown. Our shops are walkable and there is no other reason to take the car out.

Any point in starting it up or these days can it just sit there?

Apparently modern cars with the engine management and immobiliser systems are drawing on the battery to an extent all the time . So a flat battery is possible if not run . Even if not run on the road you should move it up and down the drive to free up the wheels and I'd never heard this one , to prevent flat spots on tyres .

Correct my Dad's battery was flat after his last holiday after not using it for a few weeks no problems after so it wasn't a problem with the battery.

When sent home from work (24th march) until being recalled on the 14th April my car was used once, for a big shop.
Other than that I walked to the shops for things to keep the family ticking over.

The only good thing about this pandemic is that nature and the environment are thriving.
Less litter, less pollution and little maintenance of hedgerows and verges means the earth is regenerating a little while the dicks that try and destroy it on a daily basis are fighting another battle at the moment.

A sobering thought that when this virus stops killing us, we'll go back to killing the planet again!!

Flytipping well up because the council tips are shut. Some people are scum.

I live close to a country lane and there are several piles of rubbish and household waste that have been dumped since the tips have closed and each evening the air has been filled with smoke from bonfires no doubt because the green bin collections have been suspended.

Took the old jalopy out for the first time in a while yesterday. Lots of strange noises, grinding and creaking.
It wasn’t happy☹️.

Use the car once a week for the big shop. Otherwise it stays on the driveway, but unlike the o/p mine is not clean - it's covered in dust because every man and his dog have decided to re-point their houses.
Also, for some reason the grinders for the old mortar must be turned on at 8AM - seems to be a new law in South Shore!
Rant over - many thanks

Dave62 - Its the same in FY3 with power tool noise pollution and bonfires. The guy behind me appears to be a one man industry for burning rubbish and fixing things. By the end of the lockdown I think he will have burnt down the whole of his current house, and rebuilt a new one !!!

and to prevent brakes sticking

My missus has been using my car for work while I'm off. Hers has been on the driveway for weeks and the battery has gone flat.

Mine hasn't moved since 23rd March - tried to start it other day and battery is as flat as a witches twit - got battery charger arriving today 🤞 because I think I will be called back to work this Sunday (unwillingly)

Benny, I'm starting shifts (1st time in 6 years!!)
Anyone who goes back HAS to be on shifts as, in my case, halves the workforce straight away.
Shineys working from home until this shit clears.
If you do not want to return you may stay off with a valid excuse (I know you have one) so don't go in pal.

Glad i had a portable jump starter as needed it twice now. If i leave my old car for more than a few days it wont start.

I even went into Poulton this a.m. to give it a run. (1/2 mile 😕 ). Probably used more power than generated.
Mine is outside, under a car-port and it gets full of dust. Have to dust the windows before I set off.
Think I'll move it out into the forecast rain.
