New charges on imports from EU from end April

I've noticed on recent trips to the UK and returning to the EU there's a step up on the customs scrutiny, what have you bought in the previous country, do you have any gifts, how much cash are you carrying.

Seems the bad old days are back.

Buying British should also cause an increase in the price of the Christmas Cheeseboard, as demand for continental cheeses falls and switches to British cheeses. Increased demand for the British cheese will cause prices to rise as greedy retailers try to fill their boots and make hay whilst the sun shines.

I'm pleased I don't live on the same planet as you mate, if all your bothered about is your Christmas Cheeseboard. how about all the British apples that were banned by the EU, and fortunately mostly saved by enthusiasts, in order that we should buy Golden bloody delicious etc. They all need to be replanted again to replenish our apple industry. Many other similar foods have also been affected. I'm sure, as we have had to pay to export to them, the charges will affect them similarly.

But we haven’t got anyone to pick them!

And you are right, charges/checks already apply to exports. This is NOT good news for British businesses that want to export (many no longer bother: too much hassle).

Do you remember the days when Free Trade was considered a good thing?

It would makes sense if the clowns currently running the country weren't specifically undermining British farming and industry whilst at the same time actively pursuing less controls on imports.

Talking of farming, there`s a new farmer`s campaign group B14Farmers that is petitioning for a universal basic income for farmers in lieu of the removal of the EU subsidies, which pretty much kept a lot of farmers afloat.

This government has been its usual inept self when charged with coming up with an adequate replacement scheme, and half the farmers surveyed said their business was in danger of going to the wall due to the post Brexit trade deals and uncertainty over farming payment schemes.

Think about our food security when farmers leave the business in droves because of the damage Brexit (and this government) has done to the industry...

dont forget the ERG's preferred economist (and Jacob Reich Moron's) stated that it was worth losing the UK farming industry for Brexit.

Apart the odd orange or grapes I can't think of any other foodstuffs I get from Europe. I have always preferred UK cheeses, meats, veg, other foodstuffs and drinks

I should have thought that a planet where the only thing to be bothered about was the economics pertaining to the supply and demand of, for example, a runny camembert or other cheesy comestibles, would be some kind of sunlit upland type of Utopia that all or most of us would aspire to inhabit. For a bit of context, there is an annual Christmas Cheeseboard thread on here, OP Go On, where contributors list their choices for that years board. You may not be aware of that.

We have an army of people coming over on boats every day, it's time we made some use of them IMHO. Pay them to work and let them pay for their board.

Yes I know this will upset a lot on here, but it is common sense.
I think you’ll find a lot of them want to work. That’s why they’ve come here. My understanding is that we won’t allow them to.

Well they could pick the apples that Curryman mentioned in an earlier post.

It just seems a bit illogical to stop them working and then complain about the fact they aren’t working.
Oh right so we don’t allow them to work yet house them hotels feed them and give them benefits.

Why the hell would you want to work? 🤷‍♂️

Yes but we’ve created that situation with our illogical policy. Alternatively we could allow them to work. As Curryman wisely suggested. Instead of paying them benefits.

Perhaps because many will have been brought up with a good work ethic, and will want to start contributing and paying their way in their adopted country?

Or perhaps that work is just good for body and soul?

What do you think you would want to do if you were unfortunate enough to be in their situation?

The last time the British diet was confined to what could only be grown locally was probably in the late Bronze Age (about 750 BC).
48% of our food is currently imported.

I quite agree with what you say, but, we now seem to be getting more food from places like Morroco, Egypt, various South American countries and of course New Zealand and Australia.

If you reconfigure your economy to make it largely based upon services, it stands to reason you might have to buy your food from elsewhere. Especially if you make it harder for farmers to find employees who are actually willing to grow and harvest what food we DO actually produce ourselves.

As they generally want to live a good life like anyone else , have a job and somewhere to live and some prospects in life. We put them in hotels because the govt let backlogs of asylum applications mount up massively and there is little or no public housing available..No one wants to live indefinitely in a basic hotel room with pretty basic food and little money to spend on anything else.

What jobs do you think they could do?

I think a few thousand that we have every night sleeping on the streets of every major city in the U.K. would swap with them any day of the week.
We should be looking after our own homeless people first and foremost long before any immigrants get a roof over there head and 3 square meals a day.

Yet another costs imposed on business due to Brexit which citizens of UK will have to pick up one way or another. Still we have control of our boarders subject to weather conditions in the channel and shiny blue passports.
