.... Like our football other countries anthems seem better than ours... Personally when her majesty passes away I think they should play the anthem one last time at her funeral.. Then change it.. Either.. Land of hope and glory... Rule britannia or Vera Lynn's there will always be an England... God bless the Queen... Come on England.

There'll always be an England as the anthem won't go down well in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. It's the anthem of the United Kingdom, not England.

I do think we should retain 'God Save The Queen' for games against the sweaties, but only sing the 6th verse.

The other countries of the UK were up in arms about There'll always be an England when it was sung by VL during WW2. So why not? It should be sung with gusto much like the Italians and the French with their anthems.

Yes, I agree. It certainly is not a 'get the pulse racing' anthem. Maybe that's another reason why the style of play is so drab.
I would change it to the classic sex pistols version of 'god save the queen'. That would certainly get the pulses racing...😀
I suspect what will happen is that they will change just a few words - queen to king, her to him etc

Some of the National Anthems are bloody boring and tuneless.
What is the point of having the National Anthems before every match?
I watch the faces and many of them don't seem to know the Anthems.
They are as bored as we are. 🙄

I agree that the National Anthem needs changing. We also need an English National anthem.

Always strikes me as strange when there is a sporting international involving England and Scotland or Wales the UK national anthem is played followed by the Scottish or Welsh anthem.

'Land of hope and glory'?

I'm a Royalist and would sing the anthem with pride but there's no doubt it's a dirge alright.

Pointless post!

We've had this discussion before. I think the point of our national anthem is that it is a tribute to an individual, not the country as a whole. You can be patriotic to the country and have pride in it without being a monarchist. We need a more rousing tune, but also one about nationalist pride, Not a tribute to an individual in an outdated institution.

As a Royalist, I agree with it being played at suitable British occasions.
It should always be played in any case when the monarch is present.

As for football matches and other sporting occasions we should have an anthem for England. What it should be, I am not sure.
Perhaps a new one with modern words with great music for a band or orchestra.

Can you really see today's woke brigade accepting rule Britannia or land of hope and glory.

Disgrace... even the fans in the crowd didn't know the words and just lala'd (no offence) along to it.

Call themselves patriotic :)
There are 4 National Anthems in the World that don’t have words, Espana is one of them!

HM The Queen was my boss up until January when I retired from the RAF, so I still have loyalty to her. That said, I think our national anthem should be about our country and not her. There is a real disconnect, and it is tangible in the passion you often see in the faces of some overseas players when they sing their anthems.

As for booing the other country’s anthem, most people would tell you it is a sure-fire way to inspire the opposition.

I was stationed in Germany for 2 years and love their country. It’s only my opinion but in many respects the German anthem is better than GSTQ/K…

That´s a good post. And for those who aren´t royalists but have patriotic pride it would be much fairer.

Cannot stick Russians, but love their National Anthem.

Also think 'Flower of Scotland' is fantastic when sung by a full capacity crowd, although Sweaties are usually out of their heads by the time its sung.

Always felt that 'Jerusalem' was an emotional ditty suited to English fans

Rule Britannia - Britain... not English. It comes from a poem written in the 18th century by James Thomson, a Scottish poet, talking about Britons.
Land of Hope and Glory, also British not English.

Perhaps Vindaloo....😇😁
I thought Rule Britannia was on the Woke hit list for it’s alleged linkage to slavery or did the Wokes just get told to fcuk off?

So which specific parts of the 18th century poem to song do you think is applicable to the 21st century? Great use of the word Woke though. Yawns.
You're right of course the words aren't applicable today. It doesn't mean that we are gonna start building our Empire again. Just accept it for what it is. A rousing patriotic song and nothing more than that.

So we don't have the wherewithall or talent in this country to create/ adopt a more modern anthem that sums up the ideals we wish to convey and maintain as a country? Instead we'd rather have a second rate poet from the 18th century.
I 'd rather we give the job to Morrissey.

The tune is stirring, no doubt about that.

The words, from a poem by William Blake, are Christian and based on the myth that Christ visited Glastonbury in ancient times - leading to the festival of rock we have today. 😂

To make them more inclusive for atheists, agnostics, and other faiths we'd have to change the words a bit. Here's my stab at it:

Jerusalem Lyrics

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God Tangerine

On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance Tangerine divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem Bloomfield Road builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow pint of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows pies of desire!
Bring me my spear scarf! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot replica shirt of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword wallet sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem the new East Stand
In England's green and pleasant land.

Other lyrics are available. 😁

I'm sure we have the talent but imo there's a bit more to it than that. All these old old songs/anthems have history and heritage, yes you might not like that, and are as such well established into the fabric and fibre of our country. It would take time to create something else which could grab the nation and without wishing to be flippant it's not gonna be like the Eurovision song contest. Anything new created would have plenty f critics, that's a certainty. But I come back to the point that they are just songs.

"Long to reign over us" oh yes let's doff our caps and pay servitude to our rulers.

Don't think it's appropriate in this day and age as well as being a boring old ditty

There’ll always be an England for me, easy to sing and full of passion, but as previous posters said, only at sporting events and not when the queen is there.
