Memories of Barnet 7 Pool 0

Simmo interviewed on the Pool Friday night show this week reflected on the famous defeat to Barnet in our 2001 promotion season. Wasn't aware he argued with McMahon about it on the Monday afterwards in training.

Also, Brett understandably said the game still brings back bad memories even now. What a topsy turvy season that was.... Can't believe it was 20 years ago!

Although we were 5 down by half time, in all seriousness it could have been 5 - 5. I still thought we'd go up as we'd started to play decent football. And so it was.

It was Cottee's first game in charge. By the end of the season he'd been sacked and they were relegated.

Your right...we didnt play that bad that day....The problem was Currie(I think nephew of the legendary Tony Currie) everything he did that day turned to gold....plus we had a young inexperienced Loan goalkeeper...Jon Kennedy and the rest as they say is history.

I was gobsmacked at the Hill they had as a ground, we played uphill first half didn’t help.
I got there late 0-2 down the turnstile operator told me thought come this far still
Going in, as I span through the turnstile it became 3. Left at 0-6 found my car had been towed away. Got drunk, booked a hotel about a grand lighter once I had got my car out.

Didn't go, thank God. Was at the earlier one where we lost 0-3 and there was loads of trouble with Old Bill.

Great day.😂😂

I lived in Bedfordshire but worked most Saturdays. I would probably have gone to the game if I'd been off work.
Thank God I didn't go. 🙄

I was in Acapulco at the time and had to beg the Hotel Manager to use his office for internet access. It was not readily available then in Mexico.
I gazed at the result in astonishment and dreaded the flack I was about to receive.
I returned to the bar with a roar of laughter from a group of Leeds fans whom we befriended. They had hammered Stugart 4-1 a few days beforehand.

I was tempted to leave at half time, but I thought I'd watch the start of the second to see if a miracle was possible. Obviously things didn't improve and I think we went 6 down early on. I thus retired to the pub. I could hardly open the door as it was so packed with our fans!

One of the weirdest games I've ever seen. We could easily have lost about 10-8.

It didn't feel like a promotion season that day. I remember sitting in that tiny pub by the away end after the game, we were all a bit shell-shocked.

Interesting Simmo told Macca in training on the Monday that he had to take responsibility as well as the players due to tactics. He thought Macca was leaving them too open
