Kev Sinfield & Rob Burrow CBE

Haven't given the money raised to the Tory Party. See Liz Truss' resignation honours.
Tut tut Wiz, gaining political points on a subject concerning an individual who has given his all in support of funding MND.

Poor form.

If you have to fly the red flag as you always do, and this time in relation to the honours system, start another thread.

............awaits the usual response.

You know I'm right.

Meanwhile, the founder of Conservatives for Russia gets a peerage, giving him the power to legislate for us for life.

Good choice. Defend that one.

Last year people were saying the awards were a waste of space, a few years ago demanding and setting up a petition into why Jimmy hadnt been knighted, now these two rugby guys deserve these awards. Can you make your minds up about these worthless awards. At least it creates a thread on here.

At last both recognised for their efforts for charity towards MND.

Still don’t understand what Kev needs to do to be recognised as Sir Kevin?
Watched 7 in 7 in 7 earlier. The blokes a legend. Anyone with a brain and a heart can see what an outstanding human and friend he is without getting some shitty honour.

I don’t know whether this link will open (I have copied it from something a mate sent me)
but it’s a piece from the Times where the sportswriter David Walsh contrasts the two knighthoods that Bill Beaumont has revived with Kevin Sinfield.

As he says, one has led World Rugby’s response to the brain injury issue (he is the one who has just been given a bar to his knighthood) and the other has raised 8 million pounds into MND research.

He points out that whilst 10 former Union players have been knighted, no former League player has ever been knighted.

A interesting read.

It's pretty straightforward.

Knighted, internationally significant (Bill Beaumont leads World Rugby)

CBE, nationally significant. KS has been incredible, but it's entirely UK related. They are pretty rare to be fair

OBE regionally significant (or equivalent)

MBE, locally significant (or equivalent)

It's not some form of conspiracy, there's an independent panel who look at it.

Yes there are political appointments which are very uncomfortable and spoil it for the rest of the people who have been nominated by someone else to receive an honour.

The vast majority of recipients are unknown to most people outside of their small circle of friends, family and people who are beneficiaries in some way of what they have been awarded for.

And to be honest, I know 2 other people with MBE's, and none of them use it gratuitously.

The time I use mine most is when writing a reference for someone as it adds a bit more credibility - and a couple of times for work related stuff. I don't have it in my email signature for example so it's a deliberate act to use it.

In everyday life; not at all.

I wouldn't accept an honour, it's not something that would appeal to me. The fact that Jimmy Saville and Cyril Smith were knighted tells me all I need to know about the system. I expect Kevin Sinfield to feel exactly the same.

Well thanks for that. Couple of thoughts; rugby Union isn’t a significant world sport. It’s played in more countries than League but nowhere near as many as say even badminton.

And do you think it’s appropriate to add a bar to a knighthood in the middle of the ongoing issue around CTE? As you say Beaumont leads World Rugby so he is ultimately responsible for the response.

I've no idea about the this and wrongs of it; but World Rugby is internationally significant and that's why he'll be knighted.

There is a six month investigative process to most of the honours which is why it's a bit falling to see some of the characters who get political nominations; it's time to reset the precedence maybe
