Joseph

Just because you signed Joseph in part exchange for Yates doesn’t make them similar players though. Surely the club knew they weren’t signing a 20 goal a season striker, the evidence is clear…

He’s a project with a high ceiling, but that needs training and regular game time in a formation that suits. Guess you’ll have the summer to try and make better use of him…
He isn't getting regular time, first time he's started a game in ages.

He has far more ability than other players yet gets stick.

He's been disappointing for sure.

OK coming in for brief subs appearances here and there doesn't help.

He has shown a great touch and awareness at times, scored that 1 nice goal...

But apart from that he's not been good enough in his finishing, although tbf we aren't creating a load of chances for any of the strikers.

He's 22 and he needs regular starts and a chance to shine.
Who knows, maybe the next Ryan Hardie or Owen Dale who just doesn't fit in with Critchley's world and needs to be loaned to find confidence.

There’s definitely potential there and he’s done well at other clubs. He’s just had an injury interrupted season and has missed a few good chances. The one on Saturday wasn’t a sitter, the defender and the goalkeeper did well.

He’s a better footballer than Lavery and Beesley, Beesley edges him currently because he has a goal in him.

I’m confident he’ll come good but he might still frustrate us at times with his finishing.

Quick reminder what Sadler said back in September. Someone dropped the ball!

"Kyle Joseph, the highest known transfer fee this year in League One."

I think we can expect a lot more from Joseph next season if you go off the underlaying data.
He managed 2 goals and 8 assists in only 1616 minutes of pitch time, averaging an attack return every 1.8 games which would equate to 25 returns if he played a full season.
Although he only started 12 league games, he was awarded man of the match in two of them (good away win against Bristol and Peterborough), which is a very promising record.
He just needs to get some goals under his belt in preseason.

Great touch? Really? That's the one part of his game that really disappoints me. He never has the ball under control and is therefore easily dispossessed.

Remember them saying the same about Chris Malkin!

Chris Malkin came as a tried and proven goalscorer. 1 in 4 goals average in his entire career. Joseph is at about 1 in 18 with us.

I think when many people look back at Malkin he is used as a yardstick for the worst striker in our history. It simply isn't true. (we have 4 in our current squad worse!!!) Of course he wasn't of the quality he was when at Tranmere but I still remember him having some good games. Away at Wrektum last day of the season when we could have been promoted he had a great game. Shame Tony Ellis got sent off early (and Crewe won) as his legacy could have been very different.

It’s because of the price tag. He would hardly get mentioned if we got him on a free.

Interesting if you search Joseph on AVFTT and everyone was enthused when he came and were even talking about him before he came.

Think is Missus is pregnant at the moment as well and so he'll be due a few sleepless nights!
Was it Brett who went to shit after his wife gave birth!

I think Joseph will be a much improved player for us next season.

Once the injury were over and done with he never really got a run in the squad, and when he did it was as a sub - usually playing in a team either defending a lead or chasing a game as the team was playing poorly already.

He very rarely got chance to play with the creativity of Dembele.

He’s pacey, strong, can hold up the ball and wins most of his aerial duels - he’s also still very young.

A reset over the summer, some goals in pre-season to boost confidence, a proper pre-season to get fitness and understanding with the newbies who come in and a fresh start could be exactly what the young man needs.

He don’t think we should be writing him off yet.

Good post. The raw ingredients are there with this lad, he will come good.

Is this another slag off young players thread?

Fcuk off
I've been as critical as any regarding Joseph. When a L1 club invests almost £1M on a player, they need to be stand out performers. Stating he's scored 1 league goal and saying that's rubbish, isn't slagging him off, it's a fact! He missed glorious chances at Wigan, Derby and Reading, fair enough good strikers don't score every chance but to score 0 of them isn't good enough, just taking 1 of those could have changed our whole season.

Now for the positive; he's young, had a difficult start with a couple of injuries and our system has hardly got any of our strikers scoring freely. The performance away against Bristol Rovers was excellent, as was the cameo in the Forest replay. He clearly hasn't hit the levels he achieved at Wigan, Swansea or Oxford, so we know there is much more to come.

I've little doubt he'll be as critical of his performances and goals scored stats, he's a level headed lad who has a good work ethic, but he certainly needs a good summer and start to the season to live up to the price tag.

You aren't seeing the bigger picture

As he been played in his correct position, i would say no, he's also still young and in reality hasn't had much first team experience

We have signed potential a bit like we did with Yates and Bowler i have no doubt he will come good he just needs time and to be played correctly

I appreciate that but how long do we have to wait, patience isn't exactly a strong point with our fans? As for his correct position, I've no idea where that is? He certainly isn't a 9. He isn't rapid, so hardly a speedy winger. His link up play is a little hit and miss, although he does have 2 decent feet. I agree though, he does need more time but he doesn't have forever, no player does, if he can't score or hold down a place in our starting 11 next season, he needs binning off.

Inside forward in a front 3, problem being we don't play that way so you have to question the thought process in signing a player who doesn't fit into the system we play

We have basically signed two players in Joseph and Rhodes to replace one player in Yates

The whole recruitment process is fcuked up

Rhodes can't play as a lone striker so we play a back 3/5 to accommodate him, problem being it doesn't really suit Joseph or Lavery for that matter

I think he's a bit like Yates in that he needs a run of games to get going. It can't be easy coming in and out of the team and being expected to score every game.

I agree that we should just start him in the first 15 games next season and see how he does. We've paid a lot of money for him, we might as well play him.

Hmm, we played with a front 3 numerous times and he didn't exactly shine. I don't see him as a 10, I've yet to see the ability to find space and pick a killer pass. If he can't adapt to playing in a 2 or different positions, it's as much his failing as it is the formation.

Messi would be shoite playing in a team of Critchleys
When you make reference there to: a team of Critchleys - just to clarify, do you mean a side comprising 11 individual players with the surname 'Critchley' (heaven forbid ...), or do you mean, alternatively, a team assembled, and managed by, our very own managerial maestro, La Critch? If it's the latter, and I can hear Macseasider gnashing his teeth as I type, the reference to Critchley's was missing an important possessive apostrophe - which I've now, dutifully, inserted . I hate to serve as the resident English grammer bore, but, in this instance, with the relevant passage correctly punctuated, any potential confusion is blissfully averted.

(Apologies, in advance, to one of my 'fave' regular contributors)
