Jay Spearing

He'll get plenty of first team football here, plus an occasional seat on the bench to regather his energy. His chances depend on whether we recruit a crack midfield of youngsters, and whether Kaikai is back to his best. Football and players' wages are changing. Why turn down the chance of a contract when there are so many imponderables?

Jay said before lockdown he would be happy to commit to us, a contract is on the table, season now ended. So why the delay? Makes you wonder.

The delay might be he has been offered a contract for less money than the previous one. I'm sure if it was on same terms he would have signed straight away.

Fair comment Grumpy.
He is getting older now so rest and recovery is essential.
As mentioned above he has been a good inspirational captain for us and he does deserve another season.

Cannot fault his commitment although occasionally he does run around like a headless chicken, especially when he loses the ball and I can see a few bookings or even red cards coming up when he gets frustrated.

He is getting older ( aren’t we all ) , but my biggest fear is he starts sitting way too deep and gets in the way of the two centre backs when trying playing the ball out ... Jay is constantly looking for the ball, which in itself is a good thing, but if he’s sitting only yards in front of the back four and wanting to play tippy tappy triangles , that could be asking for trouble.

He’s 31/32 - he’s still got 2/3 years in him at this level at least. He’s a fit lad - look at his Twitter and you’ll see the sheer amount of running he does - and he covers more ground than most on the pitch each week as it is and will continue to do so. If he loses a yard of pace it’s not going to impact his game. The obsession with his age atm I think is a bit premature. We’re looking to bring in and develop younger players and play more attacking football. Spearing is exactly the anchor we’re going to need in the first 11 and squad in general to allow for this.

A thorough professional.
Jay will no doubt be considering a number of things: Contract on offer; intended retirement date; is he happy @ BFC; what assurances has Neil given him; and future opportunity of a coaching role.
I would like to see him sign, as he is a steady player, good in the changing room and a great role model for the younger players.

Has KaiKai ever been at his best?. Ive seen bits and peices of undoubted quality but more so long periods of where he contributes zilch. I guess thats why he doesnt play in the Prem though.

Why this obsession about spearing is he good enough or not Experience is whats left when every thing else goes

Wren, as many others have said he's a great pro. Sometimes its not always about just what you see on the pitch. A "good pro" adds a lot more qualities, unseen to us, around the club. He's still got another couple of years in him yet. Perhaps not playing every game but most.

You've got to consider in the system that we will play under Critchley and does he fit?
Liverpool play 4-3-3 with a flavour of 4-2-3-1.
Spearing could definitely play as one of the two.
We will need attacking football playing full backs because they are key to the Liverpool system but of course we'll also need a mobile front three that can score goals.
The transfer window will be interesting because I've always been a firm believer that you have got to play a player in a system he is comfortable with rather than have the system dictate where he plays.

If we have a lot of youngsters in the team/bench etc then Jay Spearings influence is definitely needed.
OK, he's getting older (aren't we all 🙄 ) and his experience will count for a lot.
Also he's a great penalty taker. I'm still trying to work out why Gnanders took that 'chipped' penalty whilst Spearing was playing.

Wren, with respect, I don't see this subject as being an 'obsession' in respect of our club captain; it's an invitation from the poster to discuss & debate if supporters would like to see him extend his contract or not.

Rather us move on from Spearing to be honest. Offers nothing going forward, non existent in the air & like Tilt always has a costly mistake in him. Takes a good penalty mind. Also not mobile enough.
Alot depends on what tactics/formation Critchley is going to adopt. The fashionable 433 with a deep sitting midfielder that seems the norm nowadays for alot of clubs doesnt suit a player like Spearing.

N ever get rid of a player till you get some one better to do the job ...age should not come into it i.e. play everyone with a bag over their head metaphorically of course /for all you idiots // and choose your players I once had I player who more or less was 1st choice every week not because he was the most skilful because he did job i.e. mark their best player even go to the toilets with him Joke I used to say to him , there fore their best player in exchange for our worst Guando knockers spring to mind 20 goals and still not happy with his control ,work rate etc struth You will wish for him when he goes

Maxwell was offered reduced terms, so I imagine it was the same for Turton and Spearing.

Got to say I was surprised we offered Turton a deal, but he'd make a good L1 backup RB - I don't think you can replace Spearing's leadership so need to keep him. Tends to go well when you have players with experience of getting out of the division.

Depends on how much he wants and how Critchley wants to play - if we're all honest our midfield hasn't worked for a few seasons now.

He will probably be doing his coaching badges soon so maybe we will provide him a framework to help him on the next stage of his career .Defo keep him for me

Does he ....?
He isnt fit enough to chase the ball down n win it back - good for a sideways/backwards pass.
He isnt positionally aware to push forward when we attack & also positionally unsuited to drop back as a third centre half / sweeper when needed - & doesnt have the physical attributes either.

But you're not describing a deep sitting midfielder?

He's probably the fittest player on the pitch ! He's literally the definition of a 'ball winning midfielder' - absolutely tireless and chases everything. Spearing is the little fella who used be at Liverpool and Bolton btw.... because it seems you have him confused with someone else !!

We have to keep some experience, as such another year to help some new younger players arrive, if we are to chase a top 6 place next season not sure he would be a regular starter, but still would have a role to play.

Said it a few times, there's some people who like to watch football but have generally no idea about how it's played with regards to tacttics, formations and players roles in the team. That's you,

Imagine ive seen more football & tactics etc than you pal... in terms of Spearing 2-3 years ago when we signed him we were as a club the bargain basement / no body else wants me so i’ll sign for you ..... He would have signed for at the time “better run / less toxic” clubs than us surely if other clubs wanted him? He left Bolton in the July & didnt pen a deal with us until mid October 2017.
He isnt the little wasp of a player, albiet with a decent touch, that played the odd game for Liverpool many moons ago..... likewise I can’t see many league 1 teams being interested in him if he doesnt sign a contract here.

Spud. Apart from one coment you made, which was copied from something I'd said earlier in the thread, you seem to be pretty clueless. Did Speo run off with your wife or something?? 😉

Agree with you on the full backs ...cant understand why we have kept Turton tbh...nothing against him but he isnt good going forward and I dont see where he gets in

I am obviously clueless as well, as whether he signs or not, I think Spearing is now a bang average L1 midfielder. Would he have even been close to L1 team of the season.

I imagine you haven't.

Guess what! As it stands we are a bang average L1 club. And ridiculous comments like making L1 team of the season confirm that. Of course he wouldn't, that's because we are bang average and Spearing had bang less than average L1 players in midfield alongside him for the most part last season. So yep, if you want to go on to the clueless list then that's fine by me.

Ok
Callum Camps or Jay Spearing
Which would you prefer?
One's a holding midfield player who holds his position allowing others to get forward, the other is a midfield player who likes to get forward and into the opposition box. One is also a player who's never played below L1 level the other is a player who has never played above L1 level and has played not far off as many games in L2 as he has in L1.
If Critchley wants him that's fine by me but I don't see him as a direct replacement for Spearing ie a player who basically doesn't get into the opposition half too much. Spearing is there to sit in front of the defence,, Camps isn't.

Tangy. I'm not blinkered and have been critical about Speo and debated his position in the team on this board pre-lockdown and was even of the view that he should be rested.
But I always thought his opta stats for metres covered were as good as anyone, he was an excellent captain and he always gave his all.
