James McClean at it again………

Things turned ugly as McClean headed back to the changing rooms.
Players from both sides last night wore black armbands with the poppy on them, with McClean opting (as he has always) not to do so.
A video has emerged of McClean leaving the pitch and clearly engaging in words with a young Mansfield supporter who was not pleased with him.
Looks like the youth was giving him some grief.......and then a little, 10 year old lad tried to get over the gate to discuss Irish politics with McClean.
" Obviously both of these kids were really bothered by McClean not wearing a black armband...or were they just being pricks?

Gets dogs abuse everywhere he goes because he chooses not to do something. It's his freedom of choice.

Problem is fans don't like it when they think they can hurl all the abuse they want at someone but cry like babies when it's given back.

The guy is a prick but he doesn't take abuse and he gets more than his fair share.

I’ve got a bit of sympathy with him on this issue (I don’t have a view on the rest of his personality). Wearing or not wearing a poppy (or taking part in any other sort of gesture) is his choice and absolutely nothing to do with anyone else. Remember it’s only the last 20 years or so that poppy’s have been stitched into football shirts, before that no one would even have known his opinions. People weren’t able to judge (or think they have the right to) as they are now.
There’s plenty of pricks like those in the video all too keen to abuse him from the safety of the stands, they wouldn’t know the first thing about the history of Irish politics, and would be too ignorant to want to learn.

Despite what has gone on in history many thousands of Irish nationals fought for the allies and lost their lives.

It’s hard to reconcile that with the stance of people like him in that regard.

I fairness, McClean has said that if the Poppy were only used as an emblem to honour the memory of the dead from the 2 World Wars, he would have no problem wearing one.

That’s not my point. I don’t know enough about it to decide whether I agree with his standpoint.
My point is that why do other people get to judge? It’s a personal choice, his and no one else’s.
No one knows how he really feels, but we live in a society where if you’re not publicly grieving/showing enough ‘respect’ then others decide you’re in the wrong. Grief/respect can also be expressed quietly and subtly. That used to be the case.

There you go then. But the morons goading him from the stands aren’t interested in that inconvenient fact….

There’s a bit more to it than his ‘official’ stance on the Poppy though @Qblock. He’s taunted Fans pointing to his ‘Free Derry’ tattoo and also made the post on his instagram with the IRA balaclava.

On the video that’s linked above he’s also egging the supporters on and winding the situation up.

I don’t agree with the abuse he gets, but I don’t agree with the way he has conducted himself either.

Fair enough, as I said above I don’t know enough about it.
It’s the judgement from others based on he might/might not wear/say that annoys me, rather than the rights or wrongs of his behaviour

I don’t have an issue with him not wearing the poppy to be honest. It shouldn’t be an issue.

However he does seem to court controversy wherever he goes and brings a lot of the problems on himself.
I agree on all points.
I do think he intentionally used to wind fans up so for me, he has brought the all this negative attention upon himself.
Politics should be nowhere near football.

Where is the intolerance? Is it with McLean or the mob in the stand?
I’d say you probably ought to expect a different standard of behaviour from a professional player than a group of pissed up football fans.

I liken McCleans approach to someone wandering into pub, calling everyone in there a ** and then whining when folk have a pop back.

The tattoo on his leg is a classic example…. I’ve no particular issue with him having the tattoo…However there’s loads of pictures (and he did exactly the same thing at Bloomfield Road) of him lifting up his shorts and purposefully looking to wind up the crowd and get a reaction.

We really don’t need players to be bringing their personal politics onto the football field and certainly not the kind of stuff that is understandably going to cause unrest from the supporters.

And I don’t agree with the reaction to him from the stands by the way, but the bloke is an idiot… simple as that !

Saw the clip and was stunned. I think the Mansfield fan should be arrested for wearing a replica top over a hoody, an offence for anyone over the age of 12.

God knows the Irish have plenty of reasons to complain about the Brits after the way they were treated over the centuries, but they don't go out to incite a reaction every week like McLean with his anti- English stance. Bear in mind he isn't even from the Republic, he's from the UK. He just loves to provoke a reaction and make himself into some kind of anti-English Republican martyr. In his defence he suffers from autism so there are some valid reasons for his behaviour.
