How lucky is the UK to have a responsible government?

How privileged are the people of this country to have a responsible government during this time of crisis when so many other countries are hiding the truth and putting economic survival above the deaths of their people? How lucky are we compared with countries like China, Russia, Brazil and many others which fail to disclose the truth and the extent of casualties caused by the pandemic?

The BBC reports today that deaths in Brazil are nearing 1000 per day but could be 20 times higher as no testing programme is in operation. Bodies are discreetly disposed of in unmarked mass graves and the country's far-right president, Jaiir Bolsonaro, claims the virus is a 'little flu' and a trick to topple his government. Meanwhile, in the UK obsessives take to the internet seeking to crucify the Prime Minister and government because..err...because...well because they have nothing else to do but whinge instead of counting their blessings and giving thanks that they live in a decent country like ours.

It's tragic that this virus is causing so many deaths across the world. I wonder what the real total will be when it's all over? As the o/p points out, I doubt we'll ever know that from some countries. Brazil are only just beginning to reach the peak and they along with other countries just won't have the infrastructure in place to count the number of deaths. Being such a vast country doesn't help either.

There is testing going on here in Brazil but it's far far from being enough. Basically, the BBC is right on this one. I'm sick of hearing about the cretinous Bolsonaro, who yesterday, as part of his crusade to do away with social isolation, as they call it here, and chloroquine, he said "we're at war"... at war with a slight flu, right.
I could go on but I'll spare you.

It's all so very sad. Stay safe Brazil.

I agree Bolsonaro is a complete tosser. As are the leaders of the US, Russia, China, Hungary etc.

But really? The only way you can defend Johnson’s performance is to say “at least he’s not Bolsonaro”?

Is that really the best you can come up with?

I think Bojo and the govt are doing a decent job of a once in several lifetimes deadly problem. My opinion is only that and tbh is worthless, it means nothing in reality.

Fact is the anti Bojo, anti Tory folk will just have a go at every last single thing they do on every single topic.....they all had their vote in the GE and got trounced. If you took any notice of social media Labour would have won a landslide at last election but they were obliterated. As a member of the public unless you are actually genuinely politically active then all you have is your vote every few years.... the braying on here (this tiny board) and social media overall is boring and more importantly totally IMPOTENT

All opinions are impotent, it's the internet, just one massive echo chamber.

I wouldn't say the government have done well at all. I wouldn't say they have handled it atrociously. Some actions have been taken late and some not even at all.

Some responses financially anyway have been fantastic and saved many businesses.

The problem is that social media has given people a platform to become fanatical about politics without any research or general understanding.

And everyone is entitled to an opinion. It’d just be nice if, when people say the government are doing “a decent job”, they actually listed their achievements. For instance you could cite the furlough scheme and CBILS and I’d give you a 👍 (nowt wrong with good old fashioned socialist state aid after all).

But the approach in the op is a bit like being hammered 5-0 by Fleetwood and saying “we were so lucky we didn’t lose 5-0 to Preston”!

Now that I do agree with. Mostly.

The title of the OP is clearly nonsense, on a number of levels. But he does make a fair point about some of the countries who are making a thorough balls of this because no-one is able to stand up to the egotistical whims of the idiot in charge (always a bloke, naturally).

The Government has done some things well. It has done some things less well, or too slowly, or both. More generally, public servants and employees in key industries like public transport have been dedicated above and beyond the call of duty. You can find good and bad everywhere.

I'm surprised at you robbie. I would have thought you were a man of the world and had travelled. If you had lived abroad, as indeed you might have, you should appreciate how many things the UK does right compared with other countries. Before saying "the title of the OP is clearly nonsense", you should think about the advantages of living in this country compared to most places. Then have a think about how some people continually complain about the free and unrestricted lives they are allowed to live here.

I did say that you made a fair point. Unfortunately it is a huge leap from that point to the statement you chose as the thread title. All you did was to undermine your own argument. In my opinion.

The government have made mistakes as mentioned. They have also done some things well as mentioned. We are where we are no good endlessly bleating about or praising the government. An inquiry will rightly shine light on mistakes which it should.

I think they were slow to react in quite a lor of areas. Im just glad they chose to turn away from an incredibly risky herd immunity style approach.
Its very easy with the wonderful benefit of hindsight to find fault

Members of the General public who have not taken things seriously must take their share of the blame. If everybody was vigilant in their attitude there would be fewer infections.
Unfortunately a sizeable minority choose to flaunt pretty much universal worldwide health guidelines as it doesnr suit & they think they know better.

It could be argued that the government have depended on their goodwill, a goodwill which won't be reciprocated.

As I am reading your comments deary, I am listening to Michael Gove conceding that there are many lessons to be learned from the pandemic and that there will be plenty of time to investigate what was done right and what could be improved. The point of the OP was that this is a country in which government policies and laws are transparent, unlike many other countries. Do those who continually criticise the PM and the government think there is some hidden agenda under which Boris wants to register a record number of deaths? Hard to fathom, but I actually believe some on here, not to name names eh Kurious, wish for more casualties so they can blame the government.

It most certainly is a responsible Government. Responsibly for not having sufficient testing early enough to fight the Pandemic from the word go; responsible for not being decisive when the country needed quick and efficient decision making about whether to socially distance (no!), or to adopt herd immunity (yes!...I mean, no...err yes but no but yes but...); responsible for not setting up track and trace early enough for it to have been thorough and productive...apparently we'll have a 'world beater,' of a system in place by 1st June - t'riffic.
How about responsible for owning up to dithering and being indecisive, no haven't got to that stage just yet.

You say the government are being transparent - really?
They have always said the true level of deaths due to Covid should be based on the excess mortality compared to the average of the previous 5 years. This figure published a week ago put the UK at over 50 000 excess deaths but the number currently being reported is much lower - why ? Obviously to make them look like they are doing a better job than they actually are.
The excess mortality figures for other countries I have seen are much closer to the reported figure.

Nice to see the Government have boycotted the left wing media such as BBC Newslies and C4 lies.

Some people will support this government no matter how much evidence of incompetence builds up. They will ignore the cut backs that resulted in equipment shortages way before this began. They will ignore the regular lies even when video evidence shows what they said in the past. They will ignore everything and blame whatever else they can.
And some will criticise even if they do good and perform miracles. Such as yourself because your argument is agenda driven
And an agenda driven argument is rarely balanced or fair. A bit like your arguments supporting the Oystons

Fantastic post👍🏻🇬🇧 You’ll always get the haters that come out of the woodwork To spout their hatred. But the sensible silent majority know how well the government is doing in such unprecedented times👍🏻

I choked on my cornflakes this morning when I read this post.

The sensible silent majority ??????

Can this be the same WPC who was praising Tommy Robinson last year. ?
