Have Stoke got the biggest fan base per population?

Not really though ..

They pretty much have a complete monopoly on a Population of around 160K... and they pulled around 12-13K when in the Championship...
Bollards, they've got plenty of clubs in nearish proximity Blackburn is far closer to them than Preston is to Us, Accrington, less than 10 miles, Bolton about 22 miles and Manchester less than an hour away.
Thus their average crowd per head of population is indeed incredible. Not a wealthy area either

And they also have a sizeable asian population, which traditionally do not attend football matches.

Having been born there and living in Padiham, 3 miles away, until I was nearly 9(I left before my 6th finger grew😉)before my family moved here in 1968, I can confirm that the people there are extremely passionate and protective of their football club! Everything is 'Burnley, Burnley, Burnley'. Like is said above though, I reckon much of that's down to it being a very poor town...and feck all to do there! 😏

Preston’s population is actually more transient than ours. A bit of a myth this one I’m afraid (much like the “We only have three sides, due to the coast” one) used to justify low attendances or more importantly lack of investment in facilities to enable us to grow attendances.
People support who their parents support quite often, Blackpool as a town flew up relatively recently compared to others and therefore was populated by many from elsewhere, it stands to reason that there will be more people in Blackpool with links to other towns.

As time goes by and more generations are born here this will reduce in effect.

I think in these inland towns that are older than Blackpool you will see more generations of families from there... and probably more inbreeding...

In Blackpool, not always, go back a generation and you may find parents or go back again and grandparents from other inland towns.

Staying that I think a big factor of lost support is probably the crap years with Blackpool in the basement, rust bucket of a stadium, late 70s maybe, 80s, 90's.

It wasn't an appealing club at all to many.

Luckily we are turning it around.

I've read that too. From memory it's about 90k that turns into a 22k(ish) support.
There's some stat that says Burnley have more local season ticket holders than any other club. Can't say it surprises me.

I don't go back often, but I'll be at Burnley Crem on Thursday for a family funeral! 🙄. What surprises me though is whilst most of the football supporting family are Burnley fans, there's quite a number of Blackpool fans, as I was quite astounded to find out at the last family funeral there a couple of years ago! 😳. They'll be finding it hard not to smile on Thursday... 🙂

It’s not bollards at all… I’ve not even included any of the population in the area between. Blackburn and Burnley in that figure…

Go get yourself a map and take a proper look at the areas surrounding each club you mention.

If anything it’s Blackburn that suffers the most from competing clubs, being pretty much surrounded on all sides.

There’s nothing remotely incredible about the crowd per head of population … There’s literally nothing competing with Burnley even up to areas like Skipton…

Just an aside but the NFL fans amongst us are probably aware of the Green Bay Packers being a huge team. Average attendance last season 66,000. Population of greater Green Bay area c188,000 🤯

I'm sure I read that's Everton but it's possibly down to how it's calculated. I read something that Liverpool have the lowest number from own postcode, whilst Everton have highest.

But that could be looking at just a small area and impacted by whether ground is in residential or commercial district.

The one I saw was postcode based against season tickets.

I'd be interested to know how many of our STH's don't have an FY postcode.

You've forgotten your nearest & dearest Cod Army. Fleetwood's population is 26,000 & they average 3,181 giving a percentage population going to the match of 12%. Even if you take the away fans off that would still be a high figure.
Argyle are averaging just over 12,000 at the moment, which on the face of it is great , but when you compare the populations Fleetwood beat them hands down !!!!

Also, I could have got it wrong. Article was good, it was about tourist fans and local people being locked out. There was a contrast between Liverpool and the tour companies who have bought up Anfield seats, effectively reducing the allocation for their local fans and Everton's work with EITC and the efforts they made to keep football local to some extent.

This link shows I'm definitely wrong about Everton.... It hasn't got the clampetts in tho.
