Has Johnson lost the Country?

The answer seems pretty clear to me.

The other question is - has he lost the Tory Party? Led by Steve Baker and Peter Bone, quite a few are now coming out. And if they are to be believed it’s coming from their constituents and local members.

In that case, even with a glorious win just a few months ago and an 80 seat majority, he’s probably walking to the exit door.

So retirement on health grounds?

And then the next leader? Gove? Sunak?

You might think this is premature but don’t doubt - people in the Tory Party grab their chances when they are presented.

It’s a very good question Mex because clearly we are lacking a leader capable of leading the country at the moment through this terrible crisis. Yes he has been very ill with COVID 19 and is still suffering, but we can't carry on as we are with government figures bending the guidelines to suit when the public have made massive personal and economical sacrifices.

The briefing today by Boris could well be his death knell it was that bad! People aren’t stupid but that was insulting to one’s intelligence and the knives are certainly out whichever way he turns!

Yep

Well the Tory Party are nothing if not ruthless when they have to be. Think of Maggie’s departure. It wasn’t the opposition who got rid of her; it was her colleagues. And with an 80 seat majority and four years in power, what better time?

Dressed up as ill health due to covid19.

Yes I think he has, little Gove has been ‘Empire building’ by all accounts. Perhaps a little early for ‘Dishy Rishi’ to state a claim! For me though I’d like to see the Johnson/Cummings combo last a bit longer, the damage to the Conservatives and this government is delightfully satisfying to watch!

Levi. That’s because you’re an unreconstructed socialist. 😂

I think Borris has placed his money on a donkey. His blind support for a man who is not popular with the majority of conservative politicians may prove to be a very costly and naive mistake.
Todays speech in defense of Cummings was an insult to any sensible person and the opposition parties (especially that rottweiler in the SNP) and the media will not let this one go, they will pursue Cummings & now Borris like blood hounds.

Sky’s @kvittozzi has just confirmed that number plate seen in Barnard Castle did belong to Dominic Cummings
@skynews Govt denied reports he was there this morning.

This of course only proves that his car was there not him, but the media will keep digging for corroboration that he was with his car!

He's backed a friend and sometimes that can backfire on you in politics tricky position.
I'd have done the same but I don't have a ruthless streak, had that been Cameron or May he'd have been toast.

I think he will have to fall on his sword to take one for his mate Boris or it will start looking very very dangerous.

Technocrats as advisors not as leaders and perhaps despite what he`s said today Boris might yet be looking for a new advisor before too long.

I think you are all failing to read what the country think. Boris will still be Prime Minister this time next year. The Left and the MSM will fail to move Boris. We also will leave the EEU on the 31st December. That is the reality. That's what most of the country wants.

My Twitter feed is full of politicians and real people with a wide range of political views. The anti Cummings view is absolutely overwhelming.

Yes, he has lost the country.
However, he’d have been better of losing the other “country“, instead!

Two followers?
2 more than you then! No seriously I'm annoyed that I've posted that. This is a football site. We have passionately campaigned to remove Oyston. We shouldn't let politics come between us. I've always been a fan and supporter of you Wizaard. Keep this site politics free.

This is on the COVID and politics threads. Think it's allowed.

And I was just trying to be funny. Apologies

Brexit doesn’t come into this.
Boris relied upon disgruntled labour voters. He’s lost them now.

I'm not sure Boris had the country in the first place. Its wobbling and expect the press and political action over the next few days will push him over the edge

Or have Priti Vacant come through to lead the Tories. That would be wonderful. She could even bring Esther McVile back to the front bench. Please let it be so.

I would be so sure about your any of those points in your post TBH.

So many people on social media seem to be missing the point. Yes it was just a car journey, but it was clearly against the rules, as the PM himself had stated you should not be taking your kids to see their grandparents, and long distance car journeys are not allowed. People are angry because we've spent nine weeks being told to stay at home because it saves lives, while Cummings clearly didn't believe it applied to him - he has far too much power for someone unelected.
On places like Twitter there appears to be a lot of 'whataboutery', that journalists are breaking the rules by not keeping their distance, and several other MPs that have broken the rules. But the point is, they didn't come up with the rules or the strategy - Cummings did. If you've based you're entire Covid strategy on getting the public to adhere to the rules, you completely undermine that if you break them yourself. He will have to go otherwise the country risks a second wave directly as a result of this, and Boris is too stupid to realise that backing him is pointless and by doing so, he is prolonging the pain and weakening his own position too.

I wrote to Paul Maynard - via email on Saturday - to express my concerns over the Special Advisors actions and received a prompt reply on Sunday thanking me for contacting him. He went on to say he was equally disappointed and dismayed by the events and had strongly voiced his opinion to the Conservative Party (presumably via the Whips Office)

He also said his inbox was full with similar messages to mine and he would be passing these messages on.

I’m not a Tory which may come as a shock to some (gasps from any readers of “no, never! Really?) but kudos to Paul Maynard for replying, being equally annoyed and for engaging with his constituents.

From what I have been told from someone who knows Boris, is that he is terrified DC will reveal all the bodies - including over Brexit, which could have huge legal ramifications, maybe even putting BREXIT at serious risks.

Time will tell, but one thing is for sure is that the Tory’s do not keep leaders a second longer than they need to, especially when they see someone who will not get them re-elected!!

Please be aware the above is obviously a moving situation, unlike when I revealed the facts about Boris being very ill from the same source, well before the papers or news channels broke it.

Don't be silly, the Telegraph, Express et al aren't really reporting it. Boris will just hide in a fridge, keep repeating nothing wrong has been done and it will all blow over and everyone involved will get a knighthood and any incurred costs will be passed on to the plebs.

I don't think this one will go away very easily
As I said at the start this story is a floater, a turd that the PM can't flush.
My guess is that th enext development will be further proof that Cummings visited Barnard Castle when he should have been self isolating. It will be interesting to see what contortions the government uses to justify that.
I'm really interested in seasideone's comments above as well. One of the effects of this whole affair is that it might get people thinking about the Brexit campaign and what they were sold.

I think Boris is wrong supporting his "mate" and it is situations like this where a strong leader can show he has a pair and get shut.
As regards the job he is doing; it would not be easy for whoever was at the helm
If Starmer for instance was to take over and all the opposition and Conservative supporters would simply slag off everything he did.
It is just a no win situation and the whole situation epitomises the mentality of our politicians.

Rather than unite in a crisis they simply maintain the status quo and bicker over very decision.

It really is pathetic when we have people of this calibrate running our country

This is no longer about Cummins breaking lockdown rules, its about how bad is the "dirt" that Cummins must have on Boris ? its obviously bad enough to force Boris to support Cummins even though it could destroy his own career.
And Cummins must now be thinking why should he care about what we the plebs, some church leaders and even some Tory MPs think, he has the total backing of the British PM and he can now do whatever he wants to do.
What a mess we are in when the elected PM can be de-selected, but the un-elected defacto PM (Cummins) position is now the safest post in government, even the UK gov ministers are too afraid to criticise him in case he tells Boris to sack them - you could not make it up.

It doesn't matter which way you slice the cake this is one hell of a clusterfcuk that isn't going away too soon! Obviously Bojo clearly can’t function without Scummings and that was all too clear in that bumbling rant at the Downing Street briefing yesterday!

Interesting bit of conspiracy theory there ss1. Do you know what any of the dead bodies are?
I must admit I think there has been so much written on these subjects that I find it hard to believe that the information will be out there somewhere anyway, in an article, online, a book, someone’s memoir etc?

I don’t know to be fair, but apparently DC keeps very detailed diaries / journals.

It may well be in the public domain, but suspecting something to an inside eye witness coming forward - are very different things.

I have been told they want to get rid and will re-employ in about 12 months if he agrees.

As ever make of it what you will!!

Obviously never wanted them in the first place but I think the last thing we need is conservative leader contest during a pandemic. Just sack Cummings and move on
