Half term report.

6 months in and the players look lost in most games. No shape in or out of possession. Defence leaking loads of goals and, one purple patch from Jerry aside, we dont score. 21 games played, over half of them defeats. 2nd from bottom, although technology failure aside at Huddersfield we should be bottom.

Bottom of the table come January 1st and in what is arguably the more difficult window to recruit we need half a dozen players to go straight into the first 11.

He insists on putting our best keeper on the bench and is becoming more and more arrogant and condescending as each day passes.

The players questioning him and shaking their heads after the last couple of games.

It won't matter what Sadler tries to do now, after the horse has already bolted, we will be playing back in league 1 next season unless the manager is changed now and proper investment in the team to try and improve our current league one squad is made.

Its intriguing me how people are wanting him to stay. Self flagellation if you will.

I forgot about that lucky break at Huddersfield !

What leaves me confused is that people who want to give him more time think the players that are out will massively improve the current squad - which I personally don’t see.

Another concern is that those same people also claim Appleton hasn’t been supported in the transfer market but he’s at the very least had a major say in 8/9 signings we’ve brought in - and you’ve got to assume he applied for the job with an understanding of the available squad and with the belief he could get the most out of it…

He’s done absolutely nothing to suggest he can be trusted to identify the right players we need, especially when those who have arrived and those already here seemed to have got worse for working with him.

We’d be no worse off for potting him and bringing in a new manager. They too would beget it from players coming back. The only reasonable argument against his sacking I can see is the compensation he’d be due - but that’s not likely to be a huge figure in the grand scheme of things.

Your right but with a four year contract( another Mansfield cock-up) it’s never going to happen

It's a bit like my half term report: Must try harder - even though my manager (the teachers) were shoite & only taught to the top end of the class 🤣

Six months? Three and a half more like, anyway the players are doing ok and the manager is here to stay 😁👍🏻

Why would you hire a manager on a 4.5 y deal not fully back him in an albeit shortened window (although we went in for CaBran before and after NC left), but now sack and suddenly back a new manager.

CM plays only because of his vocal nature and I can undersdtand that to an extent, but prefer Grimmy and get the leader in defence sorted.

As for MA, I confess to having no real idea if he's up to it or not. Hopefully we'll get some injuries back from the BC game and MA can then play as he wants. Still need players in though.

The first half an hour at QPR we were brilliant with Fiorini and Platino running the show. Then Fiorini went off injured ---and not been back since---and Charlie was subbed at half time. I think that was a pivotal moment in our season.
We have had a few good performances since then of course with Yates, Madine, Thorniley, Connolly and even CJ catching the eye. They were all with us this time last year. But the new recruits have massively underperformed.
Charlie is potentially a great player but at present seems to struggling with the physical side of the Championship. Fiorini might rival him for "best newbie" award after Christmas but as for the rest.............
Thompson is a walking yellow card and defensive liability. I think opposition managers point him out as the one to provoke and usually it works.
Williams is not convincing and his cause is not helped by playing alongside the skipper who is a shadow of his former self.
Corbeanu has flattered to deceive after scoring twice in his first few games. Seems to think he is Josh Bowler and he isn't.
Poveda was hailed as the new Josh on arrival, but he too has never looked the part and now seems to have an attitude problem.
I was almost excited by the news of Callum Wright's signing, especially as it was on a 2 year deal, not a loan. Again not fit for purpose based on performances thus far.
Liam Bridcutt was always going to be a risk with his injury history and, naturally, he was struck down after just a couple of cameo appearances. I feel sorry for the lad, but was he a safer bet than Colby Bishop? Not from what we've seen so far.
I just hope that Andy Lyons is a different proposition, and, if he is, why was he allowed to stay in Ireland for five months? Could we not have brought forward his release when Gabriel got crocked?

I think the next three games will define our season ---B'ham, Cardiff and Hull. If we come away from them with less than six points, we can build from there. Otherwise, short of a series of coups in the transfer window, highly unlikely in my view, I think the threat of relegation will only add to the pressure our less experienced players are already struggling to cope with.

Sorry to be so gloomy, but, having been a Seasider for more than 65 years, I have seen it all before!

This comes to mind.

I'm not sure our formation suits our players.

In too many games, we seem to have mastered the art of simultaneously not having enough players in attack, not having enough players in midfield and not having enough defenders.

Well said @BISONS - put it totally in to perspective. Yes we have been unlucky with injuries and suspensions however a reminder that Appleton was appointed on 17th June - that gave him more than enough time to assess the squad and bring in suitable replacements. IMHO he has failed us as much as Mansford and co and why it's time for him to go. Certainly don't see the second half of the season being any better.
