Fred Pickering hat trick

My Dad was there that night and the 53 final and Semi.
He used to bang on regularly about it but that was more than ok. It felt like I was there as well, listening to the stories over and over .❤ 🙂👍

WHAT A NIGHT, and what a superb hat-trick from Big Fred Pickering. I wish their capacity was 10 or 15,000 higher because it would've meant that many extra Pool fans witnessing the thrashing.

Yeh, thousands couldn’t get in, my old man and older brother amongst them!

Never seen anything recorded of it unfortunately, just newspaper pics and reports.
Yep, one of the most annoying things is that was never any footage of it. Can you imagine how many airings that would have got on here.😁

It's a shame it's not on video.
I remember watching Fred play when I was a youngster. Are the stories true that he used to drink late into the night in the local clubs before playing the next day?

Dont forget to raise a glass at 9.15 tonight to celebrate 50 yrs since freds hat trick us up them down 'oh what a night'
Wow. 50 years ago today/tonight Blackpool beat PNE 3-0 at Deepdale to secure promotion to the first division (Prem in new money), thanks to a Fred Pickering hat-trick. I was a football mad 8 year old I can still remember the excitement, waiting for my dad to finish work and set off. We picked one of his mates up along the way and all down the Preston New Road and the A583 (M55 not built yet) there were cars and coaches with tangerine scarves hanging out of them, and loads of well-oiled fans along the way.

As an 8 year old the atmosphere at the game was as frightening as it was exciting. It was probably only about my 5th or 6th away game, although I had been to most home games for 3 or 4 years by then. I had already got used to Blackpool letting me down, as I had been to the last game of the season the year before when we beat Huddersfield only to get pipped on goal average by QPR's last minute goal. I recall crying all the way home. I remember continually asking my dad "Are we going to win dad?". Anyone who knew my dad knows that he wasn't the best person to ask if I was looking for optimism

;)

The away end was packed and it was quite hard to see, but there was no shortage of people willing to lift me up to see the action. I seem to recall the second half goals being at the far end, and you could hear the roar before you realised we had scored. 3-0, sent us up and them down. The journey back was unreal, the noise from all the car horns , and the chants from the buses could be heard all the way back. Thanks Dad for that moment that still seems so vivid 50 years on. Happy times and shows what football and a father's love can bring to a young kid.

Since then there have been 2 or 3 times that have been close and/or matched it. Cardiff and Wembley games & Forest away playoff semi-final with my own kids, and 22/5/2010 will always be up there as it included my parents and my kids. Goosebumps just thinking about it.

I got in and was standing around waiting for my Dad. He called me back and asked me who he was (very strange). Anyway, it's because the turnstile guys had been told to lock the gates. Once my Dad had convinced the bloke on the turnstile that I was his son, he let him in - but he was told to climb over the turnstile.
