First thing Wellens reminds you of?

As we are facing his Orient side on Saturday?
I will always remember the sending off at QPR when we lost 5-0 and he had to walk past McMahon who deliberately looked the other way 😆

I don’t think either he or his assistant will be in the dugout on Saturday - that could be helpful.
I rate him as a coach tbh

The half way line goal. Was it against Port Vale? Blew my mind as a young lad.

Second thing that comes to mind was him almost running me over in his BMW, was my fault running across the street like an idiot. Had my new kit on that I’d won in a Gazette competition with his name on the back. Would have made for a great story had he hit me 😂

Charlie’s stamp on him is the first thing that comes to mind.

Edit Dave beat me to it.

I think the thing about Wellens is he was just a cut above but I can’t remember too many goals he scored. The halfway line one and one at Darlo, can’t think of any others off the top of my head.

He was a good player but tended to show his class when we were comfortably winning, and did often go missing when things weren't going our way.

But one of the first things that comes to mind is a fantastic team goal at Southend that he was at the centre of (not sure if he didn't score it?).

He and Leam Richardson buying pretty much one of everything in Greggs in Lytham one lunchtime. Was when they were training at Lytham YMCA when Hendry was manager.

Parked on double yellows outside as well…..

He did an assist away at Portsmouth in the cup that was on Soccer AM showboat reel. Like a Zidane roulette without touching the ball, but flicking it through the defenders legs with the outside of his foot as he lands.

A strike of oft overlooked managerial genius from the legendary mullet, that is Colin Hendry trading him in for the footballing collosus that was John Doolan.

My hairdresser in Sheffield, a Wednesday fan, used to say he wished they had Wellens as he was a class act.

I mentioned Wellens tracked back 'at a jog' to which he replied 'sod him tracking back, keep him up the pitch'

What a waste of a talent by Colin Hendry, who basically drove him out by playing a system whereby he stood in midfield and watched the ball go 20 feet above his head.
Wellens bemoaned the loss of McMahon in the Gazette. It was never going to work with Hendry.

russell coughlin once said the same thing to me about jimmy mullen.

wellens was a classy footballer. a thinking person's midfielder.

Chatted to him at one of the young Seasiders things that used to happen during his period out of the team and he was gutted at his treatment. Seemed a decent bloke and he was very good for us during his time at the club

The half way line goal against Port Vale (I think) and as someone else has eluded too him being the best player on the pitch by a mile.

Replacing him with John Doolan was absolutely criminal.
