Europe lambasts "cheating" English

It's not just brexit and the European Song Contest. Europe hates the 'cheating' England football team as well. In fact, Europe hates everything about England. European media are having a field day commenting on how lucky we were to beat Denmark.

Paul Hoi, UK correspondent for the Danish Berlingske newspaper, wrote an article expressing his distaste at the "strangely aggressive" celebrations in Central London. The piece was headlined: "Let the English party. They have nothing else, and rejoice instead that you have woken up in Denmark."

Tancredi Palmeri, sports correspondent and former contributor for Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, tweeted: "Football's diving home." The Scottish Metro led with the front page headline: "England dive into final."

The TV2 broadcaster quoted two referees and a number of top managers from other countries who questioned whether the penalty should have been awarded to England as Sterling was accused of diving to win the spot kick. In a poll on the broadcaster's website, a huge 92% said Sterling cheated.

So, not a word about Kane's stone wall penalty claim that was turned down or England's dominant possession stats. One thing's for sure though. The whole of Europe will be backing Italy to beat us in the final.

what about the danes free kick rule 13 states Where three or more defending team players form a ‘wall’, all attacking team players must remain at least 1 m (1 yd) from the ‘wall’ until the ball is in play.

"Let the English party. They have nothing else, and rejoice instead that you have woken up in Denmark."

Haha, what a loser and people say our tabloids are jingoistic.

Who cares, this just sounds like sour grapes. Denmark were beaten by a better side and hardly able to function in the latter stages. If Spain had a decent striker Italy would be home now, they really were given a scare in that game. Rich coming from italians about "diving. They have historically been adept at this.

The award of the free kick was soft in any case.

Denmark does look like a great place to live to be fair. Very progressive.
As for Europe hating us how about media outlets go with dramatic headlines to increase advertising revenue.
I have never received hatred from anyone in Europe just because I'm English, let's just enjoy the win and Sterlings dubious penalty was offset by the one Kane didn't get.

Just think how many dodgy pens have been awarded since organised lg football began in the 1880's. Probably thousands. Dodgy offsides, free kicks, bookings, sending offs probably in the hundreds of thousands. Lampard's disallowed goal was two yards over the line v Germany. Mistakes are part of the beautiful game. Most refs would have awarded England that pen last night IMO.

Bispham Seasider has it right.

I live and work in Germany. I also have tons of Italian and Spanish friends here. Every single one of them expected England to win, think England deserved to win and are really happy that we did.

All of the Germans I know, and I mean every single one of them, want us to win the whole thing.

Maybe people are more important than newspapers?

Thanks for that foolweary. If you judged the world by their newspapers, we would live in a sadder world than we already do.

Sorry. Italy shouldn’t be allowed to comment. They invented cheating and are still at it.
Think they now call it game management.

Sad that so many people fall for the divisive nasty headlines that so many media outlets go with.
Explains why a lot of our recent history has happened and deflects from the people who are taking care of their own business with little or no regard for anyone else!

I was just looking at the Gazzetta della Sport website from Italy to see what they have come up with.

They seem to be suggesting that England are being favoured by UEFA and their refs as a thank you for Boris Johnson being the saviour of European football by objecting to the Euro Super League! They do love a conspiracy theory.

I may have got this wrong of course, if someone can check who speaks Italian that would be good.

Kane's "stonewall" penalty claim was nothing of the sort. He probably kicked the other guy first. Sterling went down under minimal contact (if any).

Of course, we have been on the wrong end of this sort of thing many times, and we were clearly the better side. So some of these grapes are slightly sour.

Even our own press were writing about a lazer pen being shone at Schmeichel, another ball on the pitch and whether the pen should have stood.

Most of the press are gutter rats in any country, trying to sell papers and appeal to the lowest common denominator.

None of them mention the Danes looked punch drunk and could only just stand in the last period of the game, and that we dominated.

And the award of the free kick that the Danes scored from? Was that not rather ‘soft’ too?

From what I witnessed the ref was consistent… Consistently soft perhaps, but both sides benefitted from that.

Both our penalty claims were legitimate claims and on the second the ref was brilliantly positioned, not only to see what happened, but to hear it.

No argument with most of that. Apart from our penalty claims. Put it this way, if those were awarded against us on August 7 I would be furious.

The truth of it is that Europeans do not hate the English but if you want to pretend that is the case, feel free.

You could try looking at any headlines from The Sun, The Express or The Mail to see where true hatred resid
Nil Poi in Eurovision. Absolute disgrace. We should tell them to shove it up their clayholes. 😀

Well said.
We watched the game with our French in law's, and they wanted us to win.
They also say the French like us more than we think (except for Macron of course)
There's been the "Europe hate us" rhetoric for years, but whether they do or not, many EU countries like our money from tourism. Indeed it's a large part of the economy for some of them. Mixture of Sour grapes and hypocrisy imo.

They certainly like our fishing waters 😀

So if I have correctly understood this thread, people who have direct contacts with Europeans say they actually quite like us,

but people who don’t have contact with them insist they hate us?

Headlines are there to attract attention one way or another, it doesn't reflect every Jock, Dane or foreigner. If some folk want to believe England were lucky or cheated let them, the truth is we were the better team for pretty much the entire 2 hours of football, the statistics back that up. Sunday will be either the same people dancing in the streets if we lose or hopefully disappearing into their misery filled holes.

Well yes, but I was pretty furious with the award of the Danish Free Kick. It was certainly no more a free kick than either penalty claim was a penalty…

Of course, we tend not to dwell on or analyse free kick awards quite to the same extent and it didn’t turn out to be a deciding / winning goal, but nonetheless it was extremely soft and resulted in a goal, that arguably shouldn’t have been.

The Danes ought to be focusing on the fact that they fucked up tactically to such an extent that they ran out of players… (bearing in mind they were playing for penalties) how bad was that ?

OK we got a ‘debatable penalty’, but they were there to be picked off and hanging on to their own ‘dodgy’ goal.

Even if we lose it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.👍
I recall that prick Obama saying that if we left the EU we would go to the back of the queue regarding trade with the US,

I don't think either of ours were penalties, and i thought the Danish free kick was soft. Some of our newspapers are far worse than what you see in some of the European ones. And newspapers don't always reflect the views of the majority of the people, although on this thread we are witnessing a lot of tabloid opinions, again.

The Danish free kick was a foul but it happens umpteen times every game and for the life of me I've no idea why a referee seems to randomly give one of them every now and then, rather be consistent.

I didn’t think it was a pen , I did think kane was , but that’s my opinion
but I am 48 , and have witnessed the pain and sorrow of watching England get done by bad ref decisions over many tournaments
lampard ghost goal , Rooney sent off , beckham sent off , goals disallowed, or pens given against us or lose on pens

it’s about time England got luck , conveniently others forget this 🤷
so he dived or fell over , how many times we seen it against England , so it’s not the English way , tough , I felt for Denmark last night , then I thought , we been through this what your going through now , but England were the better team last night from half time , dosnt make it right on the decision thou
we not won anything yet , I still think England going to get shafted by a decision
you all know politics will play a part in this , there’s no way anyone in Europe wants England to win this trophy 🏆

So the numerous people that felt Denmark were hard done to were presumably similarly annoyed when they qualified for the semi final due to scoring from a corner that was clearly a goal kick? I must've missed the hysterics on that one.

I agree that the newspapers don't represent the views of the people. However, having been reading the views of many fans on social media and the internet, the hypocrisy of some is off the scale. French people talking about cheating when they literally handballed their way into a tournament for example. There's not a single European country that can take the moral high ground in these matters because all have benefitted at some point from soft pens or dodgy decisions.

Headline writers and journalists at tabloids and Big mouths with shallow opinions on social media are fuelling each others angry, narrow minded opinions.
Most people everywhere are usually fairly decent in real life.

Funny how the rest of Europe need us when there is a war though - fck em - so glad we are out
They only want our money, our help in times of conflict. It’s about time the europhiles in this country realised this, along with bozo and his pals who keep referring to them as our European friends. They are not our friends, they’re our neighbours and neighbours very often don’t get along, get used to it. I don’t advocate swearing or expletives on this forum, but as you said fck em.

I thought the penalty decision was back up by VAR anyway! So when Immobile was rolling around in the penalty area like a sack of spuds and jumped up when Italy scored, that wasn’t cheating then? Unfortunately cheating and feigning injury and trying to get other players is part of the modern game as distasteful as it is, and wasn’t it Italy and some of the South American countries that invented the dirty cheat?

I've visited numerous European countries and have never once experienced any hatred towards me because I'm English. The newspaper articles are written by rats to sell their newspapers. Just enjoy the moment, look forward to the final, and ignore what shit stirring journalists write.
It's not often we're in a final, so just enjoy the experience.
