Early days i know

Said after the Watford game; either the coach had lost the plot or his hand has been forced by managed minutes and having to play people in ways that don't make sense.

I can say for sure that you won't get anything useful out of Josh in a proper midfield position. And a front 2 (or 1+1) of Yates and Lavery never works. If coaches continue to shoehorn people into random systems then it's clear that cash if the only driver of decisions through the club.

But lets see. As much as we'd have liked to have won today - or drawn - it was a big ask against a side in form. The upcoming games are massive. How set up and perform are going to be critical.

CJ left back 😆🙈

Cmon, don’t be silly.
We haven't actually got a left back at the moment. Thommo wasn't even in the squad today and Hubby is injured. If we're going to play wing backs then CJ has staked his claim, but really he is another of our fast, tricky attacking players that aren't going to get a game in MM's tactics.

CJ definitely isn’t a ‘tricky’ player, the only player he tricks 99% of the time is himself when he gets the ball muddled up at his feet.

He isn’t a championship standard player IMO, that being said, he did a job today. We just absolutely couldn’t relay on him week in, week out.

Thompson is a left back just not in squad.

Andy Lyons will be there when Gabriel is back.

CJ did a few nice crosses today but he’s weak as piss and if we are relying on him defensively we really are fooked.

We are relying on him though, and I agree I prefer CJ on the left wing.

Need to play 442 and get some possession.
Give the new coaches a chance.
CJ not a starter for me either - looks quick and dangerous but it seldom comes off. A sub at best when the opps are tiring.
We all have our views.
Gotta start Rogers and Poveda, and not Shayne or CJ,

had a decent game again today as well. if you play with wing backs you need them to be wide and get the ball to them and get them running at the defence to get crosses in. we were just being torn to shreds today down our wings.

the way boro play is simple. use the wings, pass to players already on the move, pass early pass and move.

the problem with bowler is hes not really a winger certainly not on the right he cant cross the ball, hes always going to come inside which if he was playing well would be to play him in the channels, on either side but he doesnt have the awareness to play that role and hes very static.

rogers can play on the right wing, i think Lavery has done ok on the right when asked although he isnt a right winger either.

I would of preferred Dobbie over MM. Someone of MM age is bound to be a bit more conservative than someone much younger. Today's team selection and tactics proves it.

I think the board have ****ed up yet again.

Their movement off the ball was absolutely sublime… enough to give any defence a problem, never mind one that’s only has a week or so working together.
At times, we looked like a lower league side against a premier league team in the cup. However look at the gulf in attendances and finances of the two clubs, bound to happen if the bigger of the two are going well.

It was exactly the same at Bloomfield Road earlier in the season, although I actually thought we created a few more chances today, Yates header, Yates toe poke wide, Lyons had a decent opportunity and there’s probably others.

Shit in terms of goal difference and to build confidence through results but I don’t think it’s quite as bad as being made out.

The squad is now varied enough to make quite a few formations a viable option but 5 3 2 isn't one of them!
When McCarthy was interviewed do they discuss the players we currently have and how to get the best out of them?
If they did and McCarthy touted a 5 3 2 and the powers that be agreed and thought it a good idea then I worry about the future direction of the club.
Maybe MM will change it for the home games against weaker opposition, the squad is telling me 4 2 3 1, 4 3 3 or 4 4 2, any of those and Bowler, Rogers and Poveda start in their favoured positions. Throw in Yates aswell and we possess more threat than Wigan, Rotherham, Cardiff, Huddersfield or Birmingham.
It'll be interesting to see who he picks and how he lines them up on Tuesday.

Excellent post. Couldn’t agree more. 5 at the back doesn’t work as many of our quality players wouldn’t fit into that system. There’s no way bowler and Patino can both play together in a midfield three. I thought our defensive 3 were good in the first half but Boro cut through our midfield at will.

Agreed. We need an attacking formation and our strikers quickly need to start hitting the net!

But this is ** awful

Cj isn't a wing back and Bowler isn't a central midfield player

All these creative players on the books now and we are playing 532 hoof ball

It's not good but to be expected if I'm honest

We need better in the second half, would be a start if we tried to keep the ball on the floor and tried to pass it to each other
What a ** whopper you are! You couldn't wait to stick your tiny Welsh Oare in could you? Really shit effort.

I supported your appy love-in (to a degree) but your anti Blackpool/anti MM nonsense is ** miserable... and all too predictable 🙄

They are the best team we have played all season and by some way...3-0 in both games in no way flatters them tbh and at times we were very poor today. We did flatter to deceive occasionally and I thought Yates worked very hard and Maxwell did nothing wrong and made two fine saves. I think CJ is bench material at best but its hard to say that he didnt play well today.

Patino was absolutely shocking and Lavery was even worse. I didnt think I would say this but I would rest Patino for a game or two and let him freshen up a bit. Bowler needs either a free role or to be out wide and ruining full backs so we need to accommodate him. The newer players Nelson Goode and Trybull did ok but just ok. A tough day at the office and Mick spoke about putting an arm round the players to try and cajole some improvement out of them. That improvement needs to be Tuesday and then Saturday...anything less than 4 points is no good tbh.

I have agreed with Phil all along that the recruitment team and the board are massively guilty of failing the team this season...where we disagree is how abysmal Appleton was. If we do manage to stay up this season then we really must get the new recruits identified and signed up early next season and not ridiculous lowball bids and last minute.com.

I hope Big Mick can keep us up but I would not want him next season and we should be planning for change now rather than waiting until August to identify a new manager.

He's awful mate and it doesn't matter how many spread sheets BFC X 3 does nothing will change my mind that we have gone for a long ball safety first footballing dinosaur as our new manager

And it's truly fcuked up that we don't even have the players to play the way Mick wants

It's a right cluster fuck of incompetence

Did the flower pot men in the boardroom actually speak to him about how he wanted to play

He’s had 2 matches in charge, away at a premier league side and away against 3rd in the league.

Shall we wait and see what kind of side he puts out on Tuesday and next weekend?

If he puts out a similar side on Tuesday then I think it’s probably time to worry.
Nahhh might as well get rid now.
As per the avftt faithful. They know what's best.

Going to struggle with possession in a 442. Need an extra central midfielder with how most championship teams setup. Ideally, need to be playing 4231 or 433 with the squad we have. Getting extra players in central midfield is crucial to get more possession.

Yep all this 442 stuff is complete bollux

Sure - 442 / 4411 / 4231 - I get it, but essentially it's about getting bodies in the midfield, and 4 across the back line, and getting hold of the ball.
Nothing is too rigid - but it's about not being over run in the middle, where possession counts.

But 2 against 3 in the middle would have us over run its simple maths that 3 is more than 2

Not if they are wide it isn't
So go wide when the opp presents itself, stay tight when not - it's about coaching and picking the moment. 433 exposes the midfield to just 3 stretched lads, in my view of course, it's all about opinions Phil, and how good the resources are. We'don't have Man City's level of players to keep the ball.

Just got back . 3-0 was a tad harsh i thought . we deserved to have at least scored even if we were not worth a point against a good in form Boro team . Positives for me to take out of that . C.J had a good game . The 2 new centre backs are decent no nonsense defenders . "If in doubt hoof it out" no point tippy tappying around in the predicament we are in . We played it long in order to win the ball further up the pitch and on several occasions we caused them problems & could easily have had 2 goals . Yates header onto bar & Bowlers howler of a miss being our 2 best chances amongst a good half dozen created . Which is considerably more than the many zero attempt games we've witnessed recently .
The midfield though was lacking & the central back 3 had little protection in front of them which Boro capitalised on throughout. Thought Bowler really didn't look match fit at all and his once nimble legs looked like a fair few kebabs had found a new home . Would like to have seen him subbed earlier for Poveda.
Although a defeat I'm not overly disheartened by the overall performance , I can see that at least we seemed to be able to create some chances .
Roll on the next 2 home games I can feel 6 points coming our way very soon .

When you are playing good sides the last thing you should be doing is booting it out and giving them the ball back

But that's the McCarthy way

No nonsense to me means technically poor

McCarthy will take us down, but it isn't his fault nor is it Appleton's fault we are being mishandled from the top.

I have said this many times Mr Sadler does not have the funds to offer us a competitive squad in this league, he is in WAY over his head, ignore all the "new East stand and new training ground" this is all smoke and mirrors, talk is cheap.

Just get a grip people take the tangerine specks off, unfortunately we are "little Blackpool" and with current ownership that's what we will always be 🤬

Lyons looked good today, left and right.

To be fair at the moment piss up in a brewery I’ve got more knowledge then these idiots have ever had wot the fucks going on

Phil, I dont know if you do your comments for effect or not,but they certainly get response.
You are controversial, not of the general opinion but sometimes right 😁

At this stage, when we are looking majorly in trouble, do you bring in the throw in coach from man utd or an experienced guy. Absolutely no question what you do.

I never expected anything from today, probably the same as 99percent of the supporters. All I wanted was graft and spirit, which at times still wasn’t good enough.

What matters is the rest of the games.
Be hard to beat, don’t concede ,don’t lose . And that starts from Tuesday. We simply have to win, and I believe that we do.

Time for Patino to be stuck on the bench.he simply doesn’t bring enough of an all round game to us.

This is the time for experience, and know how. I believe that we can do this, but Tuesday is simply a must win.

We need players who can create in a system that encourages football

That was shite yesterday, nothing but safety first long ball
