Different Players, Different Critchley?

My one hope next season is that with a fresh batch of players offering different qualities and attributes that Critchley may lose his rigid formations and line ups and realise he can win the game differently playing to the squad’s strengths.
If he looks back at what he achieved first time it might just make him think differently.

Most fans say Critchley's inflexible, dire tactics ensured a promotion bid fell short.

If the coach believed the squad needed better players, he failed to sign them.

It will be a fresh batch of players playing out of position in a system they don't understand.

It's the hope of something new and refreshing that pains you. I just think Critchley has 1 style of play in his head and is unwilling to ever try something else.

If he was going to lose his rigidity, he'd have done it when it was needed and we'd in the play offs. The question is can he bring in the players to justify his rigid approach? I don't think he can on a L1 budget.

For me Critch will be judged on next season. Unlike some, whilst I hoped, I never actually expected promotion this season. I always thought it was about putting a structure in place, settling everything down and building towards next year. In a lot of ways I think they have done exactly that. Now collectively they need to get the recruitment right, bin a fair few off and I've been quite vocal about needing 5 or 6 players including 2 top goalscorers. If he doesn't get them in and we don't start well next season then come towards Xmas and he's on borrowed time.
I do actually think he will get it right though but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Let's wait and see.

critchley might ask for players - but it's the recruitment team who have failed to bring them in - we are weak in so many areas

Isnt that something you only know once youve tried them out ?

We went 1 up early at Reading then they started to look dangerous, if Critchley had reacted to that by changing the system & utilising the players he had on the bench he wouldn't be getting all this criticism & you never know we might have actually won. I for one was quite enthused by having a young striker on the bench who couldn't do any worse than our either injured or ineffective trio of non scoring forwards. Of course he stayed rooted to it, no doubt Critchley thinks it's good experience around the first team 🤬 I'm considering sending Stephen Gerrard a request to lure Critchley away again.

I was disappointed but intbujj our season was pretty much done before the Reqding game.
Who’s to say we’d have even been successful in the play offs this time. I didn’t believe in our firepower without Rhodes.

Hopefully, next season, we will find a way to create and score way more because at present we simply can’t afford a proven name of our own up front.

If the manager had adopted a different approach he wouldn't be getting the stick on here now, it may not have made any difference but at least we'd know.

I wouldn't hold your breath🙄

It wasn't. If we won the game we were in the playoffs.

I know. But I don’t think we’d have won the play offs this time around. We don’t have the firepower needed.

Also, I remember looking at the fixtures when they first came out, thinking that if we needed to win the last game at Reading for whatever scenario, we’d be screwed. I’ve gone there so many times only to come home with nothing.

Carey did an interview after the Cambridge game where he said something like Critch drilled it into them at h/t if we don’t concede we win the game, hardly inspiring for the players heading back out for the 2nd half with 45min+ of football still to be played.it’s very negative and it needs to stop.

This.

How many times this season did we line up in 3-5-2, get done in by a lesser team away from home, then still run the same formation and tactics again?

He had ample chances to adjust, but didn’t because he’s stubborn.

We finished the year about as good as we started and there’s no way he’ll change over the Summer.

Our best hope is that it magically comes together before the start of next season because he ain’t changing.

My biggest fear is the squad is a mix of good younger players with Norburnesque types, at the end of their lower EFleague careers, playing in a system thay suits nobody. Ruins the youngsters and the club struggles.

I think that is a very genuine fear.
Bearing in mind the system he plays I can’t see what Norburn brings other than passing the ball within 2 yards, keeping possession and then ultimately losing the ball.

Critchley should have been banned from travelling to away games. He was their 12th man for most part.
