Come on Critchley

343 again please with 2 proper wing backs on their correct side of the pitch

Ideally Coulson on the left and Gabriel on the right

Not that bothered about the front 3 as they can rotate to suit as long as Carey isn't shoe horned into a wide left role

Time for a common sense approach and less of this trying to out smart the opposition all the time

Big few weeks coming up, now is the time for a decent run of wins with players playing in their correct positions

Thanks

I’ll second that proposal 👍🏻

Yep agree with that - we need to go for it now, especially away from home, no good tactically playing our way into games or for a draw - if we have the same intensity we showed in the second half against Forest, we're going to cause teams all kinds of problems. we look good with options up front as the 3 subs showed on Wednesday night, plus Kouassi to come back. Is he going to play Marv in the league though...

Fancy a small wager on Gabriel not starting tomorrow?

You'd expect a few of the lads might be out of gas after Wednesday. However, after getting so close, and the passion shown by the lads, they might be spurred on to want/fight to play and get a result tomorrow for the fans.

Nah he will probably change it to something that won't work because they have a lad on the left who Critchley has a dossier on from his youth days or something
What's annoying is your reasoning seems far more likely to be true than obvious nonsense...Lyons probably won't play either - otherwise why sign Coulson? - yet the pair are blatantly better than any other options.

We've been playing 343 for ages now. Difference is having the proper wing backs rather than CJ. I don't think Gabriel will play at the weekend as he's not played much and just done 110 mins or so. If not then Lyons and Coulson hopefully can keep the shape/balance of the team right.
We Haven't we have been playing 3412 with CJ on the right of the 4 or 5

This is different as the 3 are higher

Good op. If he's going to persist with CJ starting every game it's time he was given a proper run on the left. Lyons, Gabriel, Dale all well capable of doing a great job on the right if allowed to cross the halfway line.
That's why this 343 is better as the wide forwards are higher

Down side is it probably doesn't suit Rhodes

Well we will agree to disagree on this. For me it's been 343 with Rhodes centrally, Dembele to the right and another to the left for the last couple of months since Dembele has got fit enough. Cj and dale/Lyons doing the wing back roles with 2 sitting CM. I think we agree on the general point though and that is it works better with true wing backs doing that role rather than wingers.

Rhodes can still play in the middle of a front 3. I think rotating them is a good option though plus the option of rotating the WBs. Probably start with Gabriel & Coulson with the option of Lyons/Dale/CJ/Carey depending on what is needed.
Just need to give Callum a rest. He's probably played more minutes than any other outfield player in the last 10 games
O'Donnell
Pennington Eky Hubby (? Casey)
Gabriel Morgan Norburn Coulson
Joseph Rhodes Dembele
Edit.
Last game Connolly missed was 28 Nov. He's started every game in all competitions since then.
Give the lad a rest.

It has been 343 for a good while now. Even with Bees fit, we had a front 3 pressing off the ball.
Reporting still has us down as 352, but you can clearly see it wasn't

Yes I would rest Connolly but the fact he has played so many consecutive games also shows one of his greatest strengths, he is hardly ever unavailable for selection through injury.
We have had a lot of sicknotes over last few years, and they may be technically better than Callum, it is irrelevant as they missed so many games.

This is the way to go, especially away from home. We can soak up a bit of pressure and hit teams on the break with Dembele on one side and Joseph on the other. The worry is that Rhodes might become a bit isolated but hopefully we can use those wide men to give him some decent service.

Feeling optimistic about tomorrow, I hope I still feel that way when the teamsheet comes out.

Lavery, Joseph and Gabriel make such a big difference to this team. They all bring strength and high energy to a team that has sometimes been lacking those things. I do think Gabriel will be rested tomorrow though - not saying I agree with it, but it just wouldn't surprise me.

Bottom line is he has to go for it. A protecting the GD approach won't do.

Lose and OU and Barnsley both win it's 10 points + a game in hand for them + GD. That equates to a 5 wins for us and 5 losses for them turnaround. Extremely unlikely that we'd prevail.

Of course, if NC does go for it it will be an admission by him that he's messed up previously and if he doesn't the search for a new manager should be discreetly started.

2pm tomorrow will tell us quite a lot.

Glad you mention O'Donnell. For me he was a reassuring figure on Weds. I sincerely hope Grimmy recovers fast but I'd be up for giving O'Donnell a run and give Grimmy some time to work on his concentration, positioning and distribution.
Something I've noticed about Rhodes is that he does a great job or dropping back in Harry Kane style to pick up possession and spread the ball. His work rate is phenomenal for a relative veteran. If our wingers/wide forwards/wingbacks (delete as necessary) were on their correct foot this would create more of the fast breaking football we saw on Weds and take the pressure off Marv/Casey, Husband and Connolly to be the ones setting us off.
Re Cal, I agree, he deserves a rest but I suspect he doesn't want one. Yes he has his limitations in pace and defence splitting passes etc, but he's the one you can guarantee will be throwing his body into blocks from minute one to minute 120.

Overall, with Lavery and Joseph also looking right up for it, I think it may be finally, slowly coming together for us.

I think the 3 5 2 descriptions in media are just being lazily assumed from two of our forwards usually starting - eg. Rhodes and Bees/Joseph. Cup game not withstanding.

Saturday does feel massive. We’ve had some decent results and better performances at home but a negative team selection and another defeat on the road and the knives will be out again, if they had even gone away.

Re Connolly starting every game, that's despite literally throwing up on the pitch in one of them. Why is he never rotated like everyone else?

It could well end up being an after the Lord Mayors Parade I think. We looked completely shot at 90mins.

Balance on both wings especially the left is essential. We’ve got good at switching it wide diagonally from Norburn or Morgan but on Tuesday both times we did it 1st half Lyons cut back inside instead of running into the space. He did better 2nd half but outlet wise it’s far better to have Coulson or even CJ wide left and Gabriel wide right.

Yep only been saying that since the season started mate

I know but since he’s had to get Dembele in the team it’s created more space on the left as the wide left forward Beesley/Joseph or stupidly Carey on Weds night is pushing in centrally leaving acres wide left for us to exploit supported by Husband dribbling out with the ball. Coulson looked alright last week if not it’ll have to CJ and hope he’s not wearing his Adidas Crowdfinders

Same thing happened on Wednesday as well 😂

Gabriel will start if he has recovered from his 115 minutes on Wednesday I suspect. There will be some rotation out of necessity.

Very surprised people are thinking a slight tweak of a 3-5-2 formation is going to make any difference to our away form. Still over complicated bollocks that our defenders struggle to grasp. Tweaking the forward area won't change that.

I say this wanting Critchley to prove me wrong but mentally preparing myself for a typical away performance tomorrow.

Yes, "give the lad a rest" preferably for the rest of the season. Mr Critchley talks of rotation but Connolly has played the last 11 games.

Playing like that on Wednesday SHOULD be a benchmark for the rest of the campaign. its gonna be six pawns up top. bishops forming a formidable mid field pairing. rooks bombing down the flanks lobbing the ball to the queen who will basically take the piss for ninety minutes. knights will kick anything moving to our penalty box. king and two pawns on the bench. Critchovic double reverse old bristol game first played in 1895.

You know the point about balance doesn't have to mean 'left footer plays on the left'. But it should mean players play in positions they are used to and can thrive in. Lyons as a left sided wing back is a good example. He CAN play there. Connolly and even left-footed CJ, really can't.

That is the conundrum for me, play Rhodes and lose the intensity of the high press or leave him out and play the three who finished the other night Joseph, Lavery and Dembele. Personally, I would compromise and go Joseph, Rhodes and Dembele and bring on Lavery/CJ in the second half as required.

If it's 3 up front we need footballers which rules CJ out atm on any of his last 10 games as he has been poor and I think it's no coincidence that generally, we have been better without him in all the cup games he hasn't played.
That includes after Critchley had an aneurysm or something the other night when he hooked him.

Gabriel MUST start.
Prefer a back 4 to accommodate Marv & Casey?
Maybe a change of tactics for better away form?
I'd rest Rhodes & start Lavery & Joseph.

Lavery looking sharp too

I really don't think Rhodes is the issue. He's a class act and head and shoulders above any other striker we have, irrespective of what system we play.
Rhodes starts without question.

I think everyone agrees more or less what the XI should be. Select them and have the right attitude and we'll win. These players are top 4.
