Club tweet.....

It’s almost as if Critch has known for a while that we were weak defensively, contrary to what some of our experts have been saying on here.

Things are looking up
👍

very possibly, and he gave Marv and Notts their chance to perform. Both have failed to take their chance.

It looks as if once NC had seen these two mess up once too often we had options to move in the market.

Ive been critical of NC and the club for failing to address this, so fair play to them.

A few more tweeks to our style and it’s looking good once more.

I have just looked at the latest squad and I couldn’t see his name, so I would hazard a guess he will be available for Ipswich.

Current squad:

Goalkeepers

Maxwell
Fojticek
Sims

Centre Backs

Grétarsson
Ballard
Ekpiteta
Nottingham
Thorniley

Left Backs

Husband
Mitchell
Garbutt

Right Backs

Gabriel
Turton
Howe

Central Midfielders

Virtue
Robson
Anderson
Ward
Williams
Antwi

Wingers

Hamilton
Kaikai
Lubala
Kemp
Sarkic
Shaw

Strikers

Yates
Madine

Impressive depth but I suppose it’s now a bit bloated in certain positions.

2 full internationals brought in on the same day, for the position most in need of strengthening.

What more can SS do to back Critch?
Maybe it is time all of the fans did the same
Totally agree...a declaration of intent...I thought 2 centre halves and a right back would come in and we are getting cover in most positions...I guess Nottingham will be offloaded to Crewe and Thorniley to Bradford or somewhere similar...if we got a KDH style player in now I would really fancy us to hit the ground running...Hats off to the board and the owner for this

Marv is doing ok IMO.

Bit more info at this link. For anyone not fluent in norwegian, I've translated it (copied it into Google translate!) from his old clubs announcement. Says he's a midfielder and a left back (another one!) But I'm assuming that's just the literal translation and means hes been converted to a centre back from left back. Sounds like he fits the profile critchley wants in the system. Let's see if he's any good...

Aalesund Football Club and Blackpool have agreed on a transfer for Daniel Leo Gretarsson. The Icelander's contract with AaFK had a duration until the end of this year's season. Daniel leaves the club with a short time left on his contract, and AaFK gets money for him.

The Icelandic midfielder came to AaFK from Grindavik ahead of the 2015 season and made his debut against Rosenborg at Lerkendal as a left back in front of almost 20,000 spectators as a 19-year-old. He was later retrained and has grown into the role of stopper.

In conversations with AaFK, Daniel has made it clear that he does not want to extend his contract with the club, and that he wants to try his hand at a new club in another country.

- Daniel has in many ways been a great example. He came here as a young boy and has over time developed into a man. We wanted to extend with Daniel, and started that process a year and a half ago without reaching an agreement. Unfortunately, the interest in resale during the contract period has not been present until now. We at AaFK understand that he now wants to move on and thank him for the contribution, says sports manager Bjørn Erik Melland.

Head coach Lars Arne Nilsen wishes Daniel good luck in Blackpool.

- When I took over the coaching responsibility, I knew that it was likely that Daniel would disappear. This is how it is sometimes in football, that you both lose and gain. We wish him all the best, says Lars Arne.

We wish Daniel good luck and thank you for great years together!

Marv will improve given time and is probably still a bit nervous and definitely raw. He has size and pace and with a good leader next to him will improve fast...I think for now though it will be a back 4 of Garbutt Greterson Ballard Gabriel...they hopefully have pace and quality and are a step above what we have had so far...time for everyone to take a deep breath , accept its a work in progress and back NC for the foreseeable future. We could only have dreamt of this 18 months ago. A great time to be a seasider!!

We've signed Gabriel, Mitchell, Garbutt, Ballard and Grettarson to add to Ekpiteta defensively.. He's not messing about Mr Sadler, pandemic or no pandemic.
In fact with 6 new defenders we seem comparatively light in midfield and attack now! Four midfielders signed Robson Keshi Sarkic Williams, to go with Virtue, Ward and Antwi. And four strikers, Lubala Yates CJ Kemp to add to Kaikai and Madine.

Hopefully we can get a decent XI out of that lot. We've only really got CJ firing up front as yet.

Seems a bit repetitive, until you realise who we’ve got on the right wing...

hand us the title right now and give Hamilton the golden boot 🏆
Wow.
For a centre half who is gonna be playing at our level that left foot is one hell of an outlet if the opposition are squeezing and pressing.
They either play deeper giving our midfield more time on the ball, or push up and CJ murders them with balls played in behind.

Just caught up with this news.
Brilliant SS & NC. 👍👍
Filling the obvious issue in defence. Surprised we didn’t go abroad sooner. I’d be inclined to shop abroad for the prolific forward we still need.

Too late to be looking abroad for a forward now, at least for this transfer window

Still unsure why some are questioning Marv? He looks decent to me and is going to get better. he knows he's going to have to play for his place now. He has the shirt, he needs to hold onto it so it's up to him.
Personally I'd rather he wasn't in our best 11 for now, although I think be will come good in time. Every game he seems to have misplaced a pass across the back line

I like his range of long range diagonal passes.
Very Charlie Adam esq. 👍
Just the service the likes of CJ and Yates will love.
(Also bypasses that tip tap sideways nonsense on the halfway line.)

Marv is doing ok IMO.

I want to agree with you, but when I think about the catalogue of errors he’s had in 4 games I just can’t.

I’ve said he has improved since Plymouth, and out of Notts and him he’s Been slightly Better. But without some experience next to him it’s been like watching a rabbit in headlights.

Rabbit in headlights is unfair. He doesn't look confident yet, but he is surrounded by uncertainty, and coping better than you are suggesting, in the circumstances. He got massively criticised for giving away a corner in Saturday, a huge exaggeration of what happened IMO. Classic Avftt analysis after a defeat.

Anyway. He's better than Thorniley. 😉

Maybe having Notts next to him has caused problems? He might be better with better players he can trust. I think there's a good CB in there. LO said he had a slow start and then became a good player for them.

I personally think we're relying on CJ too much already!
On the Lincoln website it said that as soon as they'd sorted out the threat of Hamilton 2nd half the game became easier for them. 🤷‍♂️

Appleton changed full back at half time and by the 55th minute CJ had skinned him 4 times...not sure I'd call that nullifying the threat.

Ah completely disagree mate, there obviously been something wrong if many many people are pointing out the same things. But that’s what makes the world go round different opinions, the world would be boring if we’re all the same.

See I didn’t think Thorniley was that bad, and I saw him play in really the only two performances he’s made for us.

Yes I agree with this. I’m not saying he’s a bad player, he could be very good for us as I think he has improved and shown some good glimpses in between the bad ones.

Completely agree that coming into a new back four with Notts next to him was a disaster for the lad.

Good luck to him.

It may well be that Marv & Notts, if playing alongside Gretarsson, are both more settled and composed going forward due to having someone on his natural left side with a bit of experience.
Although after Sunday it is a bit of a moot point, it is like Gomez and Matip playing together, which wouldn't fill anyone with much confidence; however put either alongside VVD and they instantly up their game.

Anyone hear Scott Mills and Chris Stark on Five Live on Saturday talking about the best club social media? Think we need to up ours a bit but nice to see us getting a sense of humour and being more creative 👏
