Blackpool v Peterborough BSM Semi Final Official Matchnight Thread 20.02.24

Posh played well tonight. We weren’t too bad I’ve seen us play a lot worse I just think they were hungrier for it and Saturdays win will have partly contributed to that.

A stronger team could’ve been picked but honestly I’m not that arsed about the competition even though I’ve been to most of the games. It takes me back to a time when we were at a certain level and we aren’t that little club grateful for success in tinpot competitions anymore.
You are totally deluded if you think..”we weren’t too bad” .

We were a complete joke of a football team…& I use the term “football” very loosely. Only Ekpiteta can hold his head high after that game.

Yeh 100% I couldn’t really muster any excitement for the competition even if we were at Wembley. It just reminds me of the days when we were very shit and I don’t view us like that anymore. It’s depressing we are even in to be honest.

I only went to the games this season to get a good look at some of the fringe/youth players. They were like reserve games to watch.

Fair enough 👍

Somebody please explain that performance and tactics to me. Peterborough are a good side who knocked the ball about brilliantly, keeping possession and getting between our lines BUT dear me how shit were we !!
Ekpiteta and O'Donnell ( despite his distribution) apart we were frickin useless. What do Virtue and Connolly bring to the party ? Is Coulson Dom Thompson in disguise ?
It was embarrassing the gulf between the two teams tonight and the managers failure to react early beggars belief.
After that first half I'd have hooked Virtue, who somehow stayed on for the entire game, Connolly and Beesley at halftime.
All I can say is George Byers must be thinking what the fcku have I come to.

I would be very happy to see us play in a similar manner to Peterborough one day . They make mistakes at the back but then they can afford to. Ferguson has put together a very exciting young team with bags of potential to improve.
This time they made us look like a pub team for most of the 90 minutes, well done to them . Now will someone show Critchley the door .
I would ordinarily take you to task about Critchley. Not tonight. It was obvious what Ferguson was doing and it was obvious how easily Critchley's tactics fell into his trap. We huffed and puffed whilst Ferguson's players found good passes. Poor stuff.

Harsh on him, what did Beesley, Joseph and Lavery do? Difficult when you get no service at all, the midfield, wing backs and 2 of the central defenders should be ashamed of their performances tonight, but the tactics are completely wrong
Maybe but apart from out muscling someone once he is so slow & didn’t win many headers. Maybe one for the future but unless he can improve his acceleration (unlikely) you’re right about other players as tonight we looked like non league against top Championship. We’ll probably beat Bolton & lose to Shrewsbury having thrown it away to Orient. 🙄

Newsflash…we are shit. It’s a definite return of the turd and I’m not just talking about the head coach coming back.

To be honest, even if we had our first team out, the outcome would have been similar.

When you can't do the basics like play the offside trap, it doesn't matter who plays. Been happening all season. The players are clearly struggling with the system and it's becoming more and more evident each week.
That youth on the left got played in a few times might of been the same one Connelly shoved in the face but they targeted that as a weak area

Yep Ekpiteta,Hubby and O donnell put their bodies on the line numerous times.

I think what I’m trying to say is Peterborough were very good on the night and they contributed to our defeat whereas a lot of the performances of late have been of our own making.I can tell when we play poorer because the tempo and movement isn’t there and I think we showed some tempo tonight. Not a good performance don’t get me wrong but I can accept it more because Posh were good on the night

Perhaps but tinker man likes to rotate. Beesley did actually win some headers early on & Virtue put in a shift. But we seemed unable to pass a ball at all. Don’t mention Connolly 🙄

Well, when we were very shit we won it twice 🤷‍♂️

What’s this smirk all about in his post match interview? You’ve just fielded a team that has been battered all over the pitch and you’re smiling!!?
That annoyed me too.

I'm not sure what the problem is, it's 4 changes, O'Donnell was always going to play, Beesley needs minutes, as does Virtue and hasn't Connolly played most of the BSMT games?
Pennington, Lavery, Dembele and Byers are all there if we need them along with Kouassi and CJ.

They’re a good side, probably the best footballing side in the league, but they won’t keep this pace up. It’s a game we will deal with and come out on top in the end.
Really

Masterclass from Peterborough who showed what a team full of confidence can do! Every single one one of their players looked desperate to get to Wembley! Ours looked desperate to help them..
But they aren't a team full of confidence, their recent form is worse than ours. They did however look like a very competent team from 1 to 11 that was well coached.
We look like a thrown together rag rag bunch of lower and none league footballers.

They were superb tonight, unfortunately a different level to us.
Everyone of their players are very good on the ball and nearly all of them can take a player on.
We have just one player that can do that, Dembele.
I’m a starting to think that those involved in recruitment are taking the pish out of SS.

Exactly right

I wish Mason-Clark played for us, quality.
He's signed for Coventry and loaned back to P'Boro. They have a knack of finding players and developing them, they've been doing it for years. We've been given a footballing lesson tonight .....again! Poor performances both individually and collectively Virtue, Connolly, Morgan and Coulson. In fact, easier to name the players that did ok O'Donnell and Big Marv.

Critchley, Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dumb have no ability to identify what's going wrong and how to correct it. I can see it going horribly wrong on Saturday and that'll be season over.

No I agree. But no service from midfield The balls are hoofed forward to front - easy for defenders. Remembered
the days of Adam Southern Vaughan and even Wellens and Deary ( in the ‘old’ days) when they worked so hard ! Little hoof ball in those days

Deary
You knew what would happen with the starting lineup

Critchley is about as much use as that tub of lard from HIGNFY. He adds nothing to the Club. Zero. Zilch.
We would be better with nobody in charge.

He endlessly repeats the same mistakes.
He constantly chops and changes the starting line up, to the point we look like the Dog & Duck pub 11 in pre-season.
The system is shîte, but he sticks rigidly to the same non-functioning mess.
Subs on 70 mins, no matter how cräp we are doing or if it clearly isn’t working.
It’s really hard to tell if most of these players will be able to make the grade, consistently, but on the evidence so far, most are really poor recruitments. I’d happily clear 90 % out this summer and start again fresh.
The recruitment team should be getting their P45s. The kind of useless filler cräp we gave Karl grief for signing.
The whole Club strategy is a shambles. As bad as that Supporters Together böllocks charter.

Sadler needs to step up and take responsibility for his abysmal appointments of Critchley and Dumb & Dumber.

The supporters need something to cling onto for the remainder of this awful season, and some hope for 2024/25 season.

It really has come to something, I'm afraid to have to say, when the only real positives you are able to dredge up from that s--ts--w, which so many of us had the misfortune to witness today, are focussed on the various positive aspects Posh succeeded in delivering during the course of the 90 minutes they were out on the pitch, thereby keeping us all thoroughly entertained, whilst 'toying', in a rather embarrasing manner, with the hapless opposition ...

You couldn't be so good as to pass on the secret of how to emulate that performance, could you?

We still have a 'little club' mentality and always will have under Sadler & Critchley.
That was a diabolical performance tonight.

Beesley Virtue and Donnelly especially were off the pace, they came with there A game we couldn’t carry 3 passengers and expect to win. I’d of took Connelly off after 10 mins or to save him some embarrassment 25 mins when it was obvious he was getting trounced.

Not our own doing? Did you see our defending? Did you see the complete failure of the offside trap, did you see all the space between the lines?

Peterborough were good but blimey, we contributed massively towards their Tuesday night stroll.

They made us look like a Sunday league team with their one touch, quick passing football.

Looked extremely confident to me, and I wish we played like that
Didn't play that way for the last 4 games? Think we're over doing it.

They played above their normal level.

And we played below the garbage standard we've set this season. And that was the result.

They are a good team, I don't like their over playing of the football in their 5 yard box. City and Arsenal don't do that for good reason.
