It's hard to see how it won't spread everywhere given how contagious it apparently is and with the amount of contact one person can have on people and surfaces. If people are still contagious in the long incubation period and not knowing if they have it then it'll soon be everywhere.

Earlier today wiped down the door handles etc here and also in the car.

Have to presume it's not in here yet here and so now just wash hands upon entering and don't touch face if possible. Or after work wash hands before entering car.

I did read it could potentially live upt 9 days on some surfaces at the right temperature on metal or plastic. That was based on Sars coronavirus but an expert says it probably more like a day with this one but no one knows. Even a day is long enough to spread it around a lot.

I think we got ahead of the game with our hygiene warnings and advice etc - don't forget it took off in China, Iran and Northern Italy as the outbreak was just starting and they wouldn't have had the warnings we have had. Can't help feeling that it'll be a storm in the teacup and we'll have moved on in a months time. That said, all it takes is for it to hit say Africa and for guards to go down and it could quickly start up again.

Does anyone think the UK is underplaying the risks by not carrying out checks at airports and allowing events such as the London Marathon to take place? Just feels like a recipe for disaster to me. In May, thousands of people will arrive in Blackpool for the annual ballroom dance festival, many from China and Italy. The Italians seem to have finally taken action to segregate but probably too late for them.

There is an awful lot of people going into panic mode over something far less lethal than many other diseases. How many does flu kill in the UK each year, hinders if not thousands?
And as for all the morons panic buying!!!

I get the flu kills thousands each year, but alot of people who are old/vulnerable are able to get vaccines for it...
There is nothing available for Coronavirus, so I get why some people are in panic mode..
I think that what does show at times like this is the greed of some people who literally fill their cars with 10 packs of toilet roll and full cases of hand sanitizer, which will last month's.. so people who are more vulnerable to it can't even get anything just in with a weekly shop.

The flu does kill lots but as mentioned above it's nothing that's new and we have jabs for it and are accustomed to dealing with it.

Coronavirus is more severe and more likely to lead to severe respiratory symptoms and is completely new.

Flu has a fatality rate of about 0.1% and coronavirus was at about 1% so 10 times more deadly. Its was even higher in China.

The fact it's so much more contagious probably double of flu or maybe more and probably picked up from quicker encounters, maybe from touching surfaces too means if the numbers keep going up then people will struggle to get beds in hospitals. Even then the milder cases or severe cases without treatment and help are going to be worse. This again makes it much worse than flu due to the strain it will put on the health services.

We see the examples in patient 1 in italy a 38 year old marathon runner who must be fit and struggling with respiratory failure. Reports of other healthy people finding it a lot worse tha flu. The Chinese doctor who died was trying to warn people was young and healthy but died apparently from being exposed to more viral particles from sick people with it. Still, a bit worrying.

The claim that more people die from flu is a fallacy. The mortality rate from covid-19 is way higher than from flu. There is no treatment and hospitals won't touch victims with a barge pole. IMO the authorities are definitely underplaying the danger of this virus with their 'wash your hands' solution.

What else should be done Tommy? Washing your hands and not touching your face seems to be the advice from experts the world over, as well as self isolating if you have symptoms. There’s no doubt this is a serious virus and I’m sure it will escalate, but I can’t see any other realistic solutions. They’re not going to stop flights, shut down industries etc., the economic costs are too high.

Average UK deaths from flu is 17000 per year. People are panicking because the whole risk has been over-hyped in the press.

We will be fine, after the initial shocks over how many deaths there will be,give it a year or so and there will be a baby boom.

Yeah but normal flu is widespread and this one is new and started from a single source.

So if its given time to spread like normal flu and worse because of how contagious it is, itll be very bad news.

The death rate of flu is approximately 0.1% and coronavirus is at least 1%. Maybe 1.4 and in China a lot higher. So much so that the WHO puts the global death rate at 3 4%. That's way higher so far.

It's a lot worse and spreads a lot easier and given how overwhelmed hospitals will be it'll make the milder cases more dangerous.

Im supposed to be going to a wedding in Florence in May???
As some say with the speed this is changing it may be all over bar the shouting by then.. But tonights news that Italy is in quarantine may change things?

Still 0 in Blackpool yesterday - makes us look like Royston Vasey - the town no one visits or leaves!

Can imagine if this were summer we'd be badly affected.

Asian flu , sars, Coronavirus. Every few years we have another ‘pandemic’, which very rarely materialises. Anyone who wants to walk about frightening themselves is welcome to I will just continue on my merry way, if it happens it happens. Of course I will wash my hands regularly etc. But that is what I would normally do anyway, anyone who doesn’t is asking for trouble.

You do realise that in the last two pandemics there were 4 cases of SARS and 5 cases of MERS in the UK. There are already 300+ cases of Coronovirus and estimates are that this will soon be 1000's. Stick your head in the sand if you want to but don't try belittling people who warn that this is different.(you don't lock down a country like Italy because a few people have got a bit of flu).

That’s right join the other prophets of doom. Quoting numbers which is pure speculation is is just nonsense. Take precautions, yes, keep trying to find an antidote, yes. But don’t guess at future infections, why stop at thousands, go the whole hog, predict millions. If other people want to lock themselves away, far play, just wait and see. If you don’t hear from me ever again, I was wrong you were right.
