Baltimore Bridge collapses.

Amazing just seen the pictures on the news.
It’s a good job this was in the middle of the night as hundreds of vehicles would have been on that bridge in daylight.
Be interesting to know how it exactly happened as ships just don’t run into bridges without a reason and it looks like it ran directly in to one of the pylon bridge supports.

it's staggering to think that the captain of the ship or whoever was on lookout could not see where it was heading.

It’s more than likely 20’s its had a pilot onboard as well until it gets in to clear waters.

Like you say it’s staggering.

just watched it again and you can see 2 cars and a lorry heading across. It does look like they actually all got across before impact so hopefully no vehicles on the bridge at time of impact.

News saying now up to 20 workmen who we’re working on the bridge at the time of impact and are all feared in the water.

And the owners of the ship have confirmed all onboard the ship are accounted for including the two pilots.

Poor sods that were on that bridge.

No idea how this could happen with all the tech both on the bridge and especially the ship. Not speculating that someone is to blame because it could be a tech malfunction but what an awful event.

At least with all the ships crew alive there will be a clear account of what’s happened here, you would expect.

That bridge went down like badly built Lego. Shocking.
Hope there aren’t many fatalities 😞

CNN reporting that the ship reported losing propulsion and warned the authorities it was likely to hit the bridge.

Edit to say there is no knowledge of how much warning the ship gave. I am guessing it was very little.

Said on sky news the pilot/captain was under the influence of narcotics SOME of which were prescribed and his employers knew nothing of his medical condition. I hope this didn’t play a part in what’s happened.

2 pilots on board, gave warning 2mins before so slamming it in reverse would do nothing, would take 1.5miles to stop it or turning circle of 5miles. Said they are looking for 6 construction people unaccounted for, nothing on cars as people stopped cars after hearing mayday alert- Source - Fox News

Terrible and baffling on 2 fronts. Firstly the bridge supports were clearly marked by flashing red lights. Secondly, why such a large stretch of the bridge collapsed like a pack of cards when a single support was hit.

Did they lose the power that included steering power ? That would explain the first part. Very unlucky it went off course right into the supports though, as it could have gone off course and still missed them with ease.

As for how it collapsed, yes, shocking. Maybe they naively didn’t think a cargo of this size and weight would hit the bridge supports, ever.

I would have thought anchors should be ready entering a narrow channel. Steering gear and or engine failure.

Looks like the power went, it drifted a bit to the right and they tried to correct when it came back on until it went off again.

Something that size is going to bring almost anything down with momentum.

I hope everyone is somehow alright, but would be pretty awful falling into the water and not just that having a bridge go down with you at speed.

Incredibly lucky it didn't seem to have anything moving on it, or even that it didn't happen at rush hour. It happened so fast, scary stuff.
