Advice - WiFi Signal Boosters

I'm having problems with low / poor WiFi signal in parts of my house (Mainly a couple of the Bedrooms). Has anyone managed to solve this problem by using the Plug In type signal extenders / boosters?

Any advice on how to resolve the problem or recommended products appreciated 👍

Have you tried living off grid?

Seriously though, I got one of those mesh things. Had to pay up for it - think about a ton - but it’s done the job through the house so we’ll worth it.

BT Whole Home or similar mesh system. Very easy to set up, don't waste your time with the plug ins.

i use Devolo adapters around the house, first started with them a few years ago, at the office. We had to connect 10 people to the server and we couldn't install network cables without a load of hassle.

They work by just plugging into an electrical socket for wired connections, or you can get them with wi-fi repeaters built in as well. Simple to install and manage.

So how do these 'Mesh' things work...

I've got NOWTV WiFi at the minute, so can I just buy any kind? And does it replace my existing router ?

I'be got to admit I'm pretty clueless with this sort of stuff TBH

Which broadband provider, as some will provide additional equipment free of charge. Mine did and it works very well.

Before that I bought TP-Link, which also works well.

We're Now TV also. You plug one into the back of the router, another somewhere else in the house. Push a button, they link up and you're done. Doddle. A bit more expensive than the plug ins but I've been through that rigmarole. Save yourself the time and effort. Everyone gets ethernet speed wherever they are in the house. Kids off your back, job done.

A plug in extender will only extend the signal not improve it ! So if its bad it will repeat the bad signal.

MESH is the way to go - It works like the Borg from Star Trek. Each part is equal (ish) and it creates an equalised(House full of Wifi)

I use eero from Amazon, Google your supplier to check compatibility - I'm on TalkTalk and they have always let you use what yo want

What’s the make / model of yours ?

Might as well go with that if it works with NOW TV👍

Get this sorted ASAP, to avoid the pain of this type of thing....

Awful news, feel for you.

We have BT Whole Home. Works a treat.
£300 seems to be the price... Fuck me, That's expensive😲 I might have to move my TV closer🤣

I got a TP-Link Deco or something. Same performance as RoT. Missus and I can work from home whilst someone else is streaming TV or porn and performance is always fine.
This is a minefield mate.... There's about 30 different options for various speeds and shit.... I've just checked and close to my Wifi Box i've got 24.85 MBPs Download Speed and 5MBPs Upload... (I'm not really sure what that means).....

How do I know which TP-Link thingy to buy.... They seem to come in packs of three as well ...Do you buy three of them?

Cost me about £80. Can see the one SATW recommends is £70 at Amazon. I don't think these things have to cost the earth.

Those speeds are pretty shit. Can you get Virgin in your area via cable ? We get about 240 MBPs download speed with Virgin.

Ive got a TP Link Deco M5 which is three disc type things, spread out over a medium size house, gives excellent Wi Fi, I get the same speed from
Wi Fi I get at my wired in PC. I tried & still use some of the plug in adapters but Mesh IS the way to go, many different manufacturers, However I have stuck with TP Link for all my kit, & the mesh cost me about £130, but worth every penny...

With Black Friday, IT Monday or whatever its called, you should see some offers shortly?

Just get a TP link plug in “extender” they work fine, not expensive and easy to set up.

Is there a specific room you struggle for signal in?

Edi just read re bedrooms - change the socket in the landing/hallway and you'll be fine 👍

Have a look into Wifi signal boosting plug sockets 👍 Work really well for the cost, circa £30-60 depending on style etc but we've got two installed and have coverage everywhere now.

We've got a wireless mesh system, the TP-Link Deco E3 AC1200
With 2 boosters it cost about £100 and has eliminated some black spot areas in our house and we get good speeds in all rooms now and to the end of the garden for the summer months

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I've gone for two of the TP Link Deco M5 Mesh jobbies, which cheapest deal was £99.00

They seem pretty easy to set up and fairly reasonable on the price front... Hopefully that should sort it 👍

Let us know how you go on?, they are the ones I have, & you can control/monitor them from an app.....👍

Was just about to say this.

I'm with virgin and I've just got 3 pods - had to get them sent out 1 at a time but in the end I've got 100-300 throughout the house now.

Previously had a Deco mesh but it was starting to drop out a bit.

We're a bit limited unfortunately... I can't get access to the Virgin High Speed Jobby, so we max out at 25MBPs until they upgrade the Fibre. By the time that hits the bedrooms, it has halved or worse, due to the poor WiFi signal. Hopefully the TP Mesh thing will ensure a decent WiFi signal across the whole house...

I was with Virgin but had a problem with their hub3 as it didn't like the PS4/Nintendo Switch. A very common problem after a google search.

Basically, turned Virgin's crap hub into a modem and bought a TP-Link AC 1350 5G router for about £50. Good range on it too.

Not sure this would help the problem you have but I've put this on anyway.

Cannot believe people are giving BFCx3 advice to keep him on the internet. 😜
It should hopefully keep me occupied with other stuff... I'm hoping to watch a bit more sport and movies once I sort out my connection... So you may all benefit from getting rid of me or at least a lower dosage 😂 👍

Bit late to this one.....But I had exactly the same problem and asked our IT guy at work what to do and this was his advice...

You can only improve wi-fi coverage....if your internet download speed is (say) 50MBPS.....that's the best, you can achieve, you cant improve it
If you have black spots with low wi-fi speed.....use the Wi-Fi plug extenders (Devolo etc) to get to the black spots and hard to reach areas
1 on the ground floor.....1 on the 2nd floor.....and so on.
You will get 50MBPS everywhere....

There's even a MESH version when you're on 100MBPS with massive areas to cover...Theses can be £200 - £300 for 3 or 4 plugs but they are very stable and work.
You can buy the same (non branded) Wi-Fi plugs off eBay or Amazon for £100 - £150 for 3 - 4 plugs

Did this and now over 3 floors were getting 80MBPS across the whole house and even outside in the garden.....

These work perfect and reasonably priced and easy to install

I was having similar issues, mate.
im with Virgin , and got a deal this year to upgrade my package to Fibre 500Mbps , cheaper than the package I was already on with them. ( was 300Mbps )

im pretty clueless about it all to be fair, and I thought as I’m now officially on a quicker speed my internet should vastly improve, however nothing changed, infact it was running slower if anything after the upgrade.

I contacted virgin, who kindly sent round an engineer to check.

Firstly, he told me to bin my old ‘ official virgin ‘ wifi repeater plug in, as he said that wasn’t doing anything.
I have an IP CCTV cheap cam off Amazon anchored to the side of our house, and it was forever dropping offline. ( It requires something like a minimum of 75% constant signal strength to maintain operation ). The repeater I had couldn’t cope with all our other gadgets, and the cctv was barely pulling 40% signal at the best of times, so was pretty much inoperable.

He told me to order these M4 tp-link Mesh system from Amazon. £99.00 for a three pack.
I was sceptical, and thought they are just another plug in, but it’s not only given me a strong signal throughout our whole house , it maintains a strong signal to run everything perfectly.

ps, they also do a Tp-link M5 mesh, which I’m guessing do an equally good job, but are very small in comparison.

Of course these WiFi problems that BFCx3 has been having explain why he is consistently wrong as he is probably 2 months behind everyone else on here. Hopefully once this is sorted we can see the BFCx3 posting in real time.
