Hard to believe this was 12 years ago. Never quite felt like I did at half time during that game, having gone 2 nil up. Remember being devastated at full time, especially considering the borderline assault committed on Varney (I’m still convinced Charlie would have buried the Pen and we would have gone on to win)

Rafael was on a yellow and surely would have been sent off had the ref given a pen. Distinctly remember been in tears at half time, almost like an out of body experience. All the shit I’d had from plastic United fans that didn’t even know where Manchester was to say there watching Blackpool completely out play them, I will never forget it

This sounds like an identical experience! Couldn’t believe it was a Blackpool performance I was watching given the opposition.
I can’t stand Peter Walton to this day for that decision. Unbelievable.

Peak half and half scarf night that one.

Didn't think it was a penalty from where I was sat at the time but saw the TV later and it clearly was.

And yep Giggs was unbelievably good compared with Rooney who did nothing all game.

We were incredible in patches during that season, unplayable at times.

Still think of that penalty decision by Walton every time he's asked his opinion as the supposed expert during live games.

United couldn't deal with Charlie's corners that night (well first half), nor Cathcart's aerial superiority.

The 2 worst refereeing performances were (imo) against the Manchester clubs, Walton against United and Dowd against City.

I remember that they were shite until they subbed Rooney for burbitov , then it was like a diff team ….or something like that …😁

And on reflection I'd give just about anything to have one more season in the top flight.

My eldest was 7 so I was able to take him to a few games - my youngest turned 2 late in the season and I never took him.

To be able to go together is would just about top anything else.

One day...

Me and my lad who was 13 at the time did every game home and away. Amazing memories of Dad's and lads on the road. We have tried to do every game on subsequent seasons but never have. Was only 1 season but one we will never forget

Only home game I missed. Father in law was buried in the afternoon and Mrs Fc went to comfort her mum in the evening. Missy Fc was upset so I stayed home to be there for her. I watched it in the kitchen, but not with 100% enthusiasm, in fact I think I missed the pen incident as I was talking with Missy whilst she was watching some american dribble in the state room.

As amazing as it was to be 2-0 up I still didn’t think we would win that game at half time. That United team, that got to the Champions League final that season, were just so good. IF the penalty had been given as it should, and IF it had been scored I think it would have been different.

Giggs came on at half time and put in the best 45 minute performance I think I’ve ever seen in person.

That first half against Utd was the best 'pool performance I've ever seen, accounting for the level of opposition. Not sure it'll ever be topped tbh. We obviously couldn't keep it up, but considering the standard we set in those first 45mins we were never likely to.
Imagine the north stand now if that first half was to be repeated?! 😳

Peter Walton................................................................................**!

They should replay the penalty on ITV and get Roy Keane to ask him to explain his decision making
Absolutely yes.

And while they're together let Walton ask Keane to talk through his Haaland tackle.

Chanting to Fergie about Wayne Rooney ,what a waste of money.Well he was that night. Obviously proved us wrong evevntually.

Unbelievable decision not to give a pen.
If it was them they defo would have got it!
Typical of the appalling decisions that went against us that season, which decided our fate. " little Blackpool?"

Peter Walton - you completely bottled it.

Can you imagine him not giving that to United, if it had been the other way around.

I would have loved to have won that game...if we had we would have stayed up. However, that would have meant more money for the scum and maybe would have prolonged their reign. Silver lining...

We went in the Dunes after the game. Couldn't believe how many so called utd fans were in there wearing shirts & scarfes. Plastic locals.

I am still traumatised by this game. Robbed. How come the Police didnt charge Rafael with Assault ? I find this recording very saddening.

I still blame the oystons if we played them when game was cancelled we would have hammered them they were in terrible form at the time and we were flying .We were not as good and off the pace when we resumed playing . We couldnt even train and had to make do with the beach as i remember

6th at Christmas (or at least by the time our last game was played early December) following victory away at stoke. Again, unbelievable really!

I was speaking to Phil Horner not long after the season finished and he mentioned the decision not to give a penalty against Utd and that above any other was the one that incensed them the most.

8th when we went City on New Year’s Day lost 1-0 besides Utd game Bolton and Blackburn away cost us 2-0 up in both DJ missed so many 1on 1s with keeper . Then goalkeeper cost us at Blackburn on crosses

We were robbed at Blackburn as much as we were by Walton against united. It was our throw in not theirs, it was a corner not a goal kick, and there was no foul by GTF when they got the free kick that they lumped forward for the equaliser.

Let's not mention the soft free kick we got for Charlie's opener, eh? 😉

That ground rocked that night. Incredible first half performance. Where does the time go - my lads are 24 and 21 now…. Just don’t remember them being that young when we in the prem. 😳

Watched the match in China with Chinese commentary and massive sub titles also, very helpfully, in Chinese. We were robbed blind by referees and I remember a table been released showing all the points the barstewards robbed off us. Sickening.

Had to search for some highlights with the foul. Still can't believe it, still expecting him to point to the spot.

Would have made all the difference as well staying up, no way they come back from 3-0

There was an even worse decision when we played arsenal at home. Gtf brought down in the box.

Still too hurt to read all the posts
Match fixing

Arsenal at home was unlucky. DJ was clean through in front of the North and took the ball past their goalie, Jens Lehmann. Lehmann then used his signature foul, grabbing hold of DJ’s ankle for a split second pulling him down and then letting go (the exact same type of foul he got sent off for, in the Champions League Final).

Immediately, the ball broke to GTF who stuck it away. And that let the ref off the hook, he simply awarded the goal as if he meant play to go on. But if he had to award the penalty it was a certain red card for Lehmann, for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity. The ref could have carded Lehmann and given the goal, but that would have been unusual, and probably given Wenger a fit.

Arsenal did not have another goalie on their bench that night, which would have meant van Persie going in goal... and so been unable to score their 3rd goal. I reckon we might have won that match against 10 men with an outfield player in their goal, as we were on top at the time, and Arsenal’s late 3rd was a breakaway.

Not as bad as the ManU travesty but another where little Blackpool did not get the breaks we deserved.

But I agree, the 2nd worst ref performance was City at home, with Tevez well offside for his first and Evatt tripped from behind on the edge of the box for his second. I recall Holloway said we should have won that 3-2 since they disallowed GTF’s “goal” for Grandin being offside, although he did not touch the ball even though he tried to.

Amazing first half performance. Sadly the mancs just had too much quality back then and it showed late on. Should have been a pen though!! 12yrs ago 😮
