Despite all the energy suppliers not letting you switch at the moment, it is possible. There are some providers offering slightly better rates than others, some that are more aggressive in their direct debit demands and calculations, and some that still have EV tariffs for example. My supplier wanted me to pay £300+ per month, yet the one I've switched to wants £230 based on the same consumption and tariffs - they say they're planning for future increases, but by the time they bring the direct debit back down, they'll have had several hundred pounds extra off me. If you're interested, and this is genuine legit, DM me and I can tell you what I did, and there may even be a £50 introductory discount too, but I'm, not 100% certain on that.

The direct debits are just payments on account so if you pay less per month on the same tariff you'll possibly end up owing a balancing charge

I got £800 refund and the dd reduced by £130pm all with the same supplier. I told them that I wasn't a bank and wont lend them money.

Check your figures closely and contact them.

British Gas wanted £700 a month off us on a fixed tariff and based on our previous consumption. This is much higher than our neighbours in a comparable house so I put in a complaint and asked them to check our gas meter as it’s over 30 years old. She rang me yesterday and advised that we’re in credit to the tune of £3,000 because my bills have been based on estimates for years. Our revised payments are £350 a month… phew! Still going to get the gas mater checked though..

I’m with British Gas on a fixed deal, they’ve emailed me to say I can switch to variable with any penalty. I’ve clicked on the link and in one place they estimate I’ll use £2,870 and in an place on the same site it says £2,550. As the cap is £2,500, should I switch?

The lady yesterday said that people should stay on the fixed tariff if they agreed on it before April as they’re preferential rates. If you agreed after April, you should switch (she advised.)

This is my existing and estimated costs, I’m struggling to understand how the variable rate can be dearer, when the standing charges and unit rates are lower. i fixed in June, any ideas?IMG_1283.jpg

The cap isn't £2,500, that is just a headline figure based on whatever an average house usage is.
The cap is actually x per Kwh, don't use a lot and you wont pay a lot, have a 10bed mansion and leave the lights and heating on 24hrs per day and you will pay way more than £2,500.

You need to know what your annual usage is

The cap is an estimate based on a household of four's average usage It's not actually a cap !
I'm currently paying £750 pcm based on my estimated usage 😂

Energy cos haven;t published rates yet based on the 2.5k, because it's very random - to get that, you have to balance out gas and electic etc . Precious caps have bene per unit per fuel, and they've calculated the total from that. It's much harder working backwards.

Electric - on a smart meter with BG. Family of 5 - 4 bed house approx £3.85 per day so £120 approx a month. This is on BG current variable deal - havnt fixed as no point as more expensive. Was shifted from an energy company that went bump to BG automatically. Is it not worth investigating how you can reduce as seems very expensive?
