Turton (again)

A lot of posters on here will be glad to know this is my last mention of Turton. Anyone like me who thinks he is rubbish better just get used to the idea he will be here as long as Critchley. Captain fantastic , terrific example, great around the group, an example to the younger players . This is just a taste of Critchley’s views, so it’s a given a new contract is on the way. Oh well, we have to take the good with the awful I suppose.😂😂

Captain Fantastic who isn't the captain.🤪

He isn't a rubbish player. He's just not good enough for our aspirations.

I must be missing something, I have never seen him have a bad game. He is a solid league one player who never dips below 7/10 for me but seems to get dogs abuse. Since 1979 I have seen some ropier full backs than Turton
Do you want to know why? Because he is absolutely horrific with his passing of the football. I don't want my right back to be trotting off the pitch having given it away 65% of the time? That's why he gets dogs abuse because if you actually watch him. His successful passes are majority behind him. His forward passes go out for throw ins, goal kicks and direct through to the keeper.

If you gave Gabriel 5 games at right back. We wouldn't see Turton again. He doesn't bring anything proactive to the team.

I’ve seen him have some shockers, both going forward and defensively. Thought he was crap last season and on a good day he was average.

He’s definitely upped his game this season and I’d say there’s been a couple of games where he’s done really well. He’s fairly versatile and puts a shift in but Gabriel offers so much more.

Totally agree and hevhas improved this season, including his more forward play

If we played 3 at the back Turton wouldn't get a game with a full squad for me but we are a 4 and when you consider since November ten games we've only let 5 goals why would you mess around with the defence.
Gabriel is better going forward but I want defenders to defend.

He is definitely improving, i thought he was a steady defender but limited going forward, in the last month his all round game seems to have improved.

I would have Turton and Garbutt starting on Saturday, some people say you can't polish a Turton, or something like that! but Critchley looks to have done.

We all have players we don't like and as a consequence we only see the bad in them.
Early season when we on the losing streak the messageboard was crying out for some experience and defensive solidity in the team.
Turton and Husband gave us that so credit to them both.
For the record I have been critics of both of them in the past but this season they have both played a significant part in turning things round.

He's been part of a back four that has conceded 6 in the last 12 games (3 of those against Doncaster). 9 of those games were clean sheets. A back four which made Portsmouth (the highest scoring) and Fleetwood (the third highest scoring) never even look like scoring.

I did notice against Fleetwood on Tuesday his forward passing was pretty awful, trying long balls which would go straight out for a throw in and such. But how high should our expectations be for a League One right back? He'll have to have some weaknesses in his game, but he's clearly a solid defender.

We all have our opinions about all players, I think he is crap, that’s my opinion. Critchley obviously doesn’t, that’s his opinion, he’s is the one that matters but that doesn’t stop me having mine. If everyone thought the same about everything what a boring world it would be.

The secret to getting out of league one is not free flowing 4 3 3 trying to be Liverpool, its the tried and tested solid back 4 whose job is to keep the ball out, a couple of pacey wingers and two up top. We have been here long enough to know this surely. Ollie always looks fairly solid to me and his function in League one is to defend and keep the ball away from our goal

What is the point of the O/P exactly? How is it helpful in any way. You don't rate him, fine, but why, out of the blue, do you have to strat a thread criticising one of our players? A player who has so far, had a really good season and has kept the shirt because of it.

We have some very strange supporters.
It wasn’t started out of the blue in today’s Gerrrzet Critchley is singing Turtons praises, that’s what prompted the O/P.

This is kind of hilarious to be honest. Stoic negativity at its best.

I agree with you there, it is a cliche but often getting the basics right in this division will pay dividends.

I think a massive contributing factor to our upturn is the tightening of the defence. We're not leaking goals allowing teams to sit back, and we're winning games often by only 1 goal with a clean sheet - Turton has been a part of that.

Like others, I was slating him at the beginning of the season. I thought he was a horrendous player and didn't think he was fit to wear tangerine.

I am extremely delighted to eat my words as his performances have shown what a versatile, dependable player he is. I would say he's the most improved player (including big Marv) and the other players rely on his experience during games.

He's even improved going forwards too and doesn't just hoof ball anymore. He looks for passes in spaces and keeps up with the tempo of the game.

I have been converted 🤓

He’s done really well, it’s only taken him four years to improve.

He's never going to be Trent Alexander-Arnold but I do think he has been a steadying influence in the defence. CJ does not offer a lot defensively so having a reliable defender behind him does help the balance of the team. Gabriel will get a chance with the fast turnaround of games so it's good to have options.

I think he's done ok to be honest. Yes he's limited but he is disciplined, reliable and obviously Critch trusts him more than Gabriel. He sees them every day in training. So he is more qualified to decide who is the better option.

My personal opinion is that Turton is a better defender and Gabriel is better going forward. We have been very solid at the back in recent weeks and I would be shocked if NC changes anything in that back line.

He’s been a different player the last few games,I’ve not been his biggest fan either but as much as I’d like to see Gabriel get a run I’ve no problem with Turton if he continues to play like he has been, big IF mind.

I do wonder what some expect and what some are watching. Turts may not be a cultured attacking fullback spraying 40 yard passes onto waiting toecaps but he never hides, is always looking/ asking for the ball and runs his legs off for 90 minutes every match.
Not Flash, not fancy but dependable and reliable. That's why he's in the team every week, like Southern was.. another player who had dogs abuse for no other reason than he wasn't a Scholes etc.
If Turts plays well then he deserves his place on the pitch, if he doesn't, then rest assured Critch will drop him toot sweet.

In fact one of Turts favourite passes this season has been the long ball down the touchline over the top of the defence for CJ to chase.
Of course it doesn't always come off but it has more than once and it's a tactic that we need to develop.

Tout suite, but he won’t. I am beginning to think Critchley is the chairman of the Turton fan club. He is always looking/ asking for the ball then he can either pass it backwards or kick it into touch. They appear to be his favourite moves, must be, he does it often enough.

Strange fans indeed. We are in the third tier of English football but some fans think we should have a Paolo Maldini type of right back.

I'm not his biggest fan, but i see no reason to drop him. hes probably playing better than he ever has done in tangerine. its also very good for the team in general that we have someone like Gabriel pushing for inclusion as well.

Good post that. 👍

I like Gabriel but Turton is hardly John O'Kane or Scott Darton, or even Tony McMahon, he's fine, good attitude, does a job.

You don’t have to be strange to not like a player. Just because we are in the third tier doesn’t mean we can’t have ambition to get better and higher up the tiers. We already have other options in his position which, for whatever reason Critchley seems reluctant to use. It doesn’t seem to matter how badly certain players perform they are still in the team at the expense of others who may or may not be better. At the beginning of this season GM was getting a caning off certain fans, Critchley didn’t pick him and he appeared to some to be a waste of a wage. He was utilised in his best position, and the rest as they say is history. Every player should know he has to perform to keep his place, this doesn’t seem to be the case with certain ones.

Ok you don't like Turton. Understood. Unfortunately for you Critchley does and it looks like a fair few are happy to go along with that. In Critch we trust 👍
I made that very point in an earlier post. I don’t rate him and,as you say, Critchley does and it’s his opinion which counts.

For all that defensive solidity we were conceding far more often. Having two proper centre halves has made the full backs look better as we cope if they get exposed.
