Turton (again)

Good post that. 👍

I like Gabriel but Turton is hardly John O'Kane or Scott Darton, or even Tony McMahon, he's fine, good attitude, does a job.
Scott Darton was famously booed by the West Brom fans every time he touched the ball in a game against Portsmouth, happy to say Turton and no other Blackpool player gets that level of abuse.

We all have players we don't like and as a consequence we only see the bad in them.
Early season when we on the losing streak the messageboard was crying out for some experience and defensive solidity in the team.
Turton and Husband gave us that so credit to them both.
For the record I have been critics of both of them in the past but this season they have both played a significant part in turning things round.
So what about my stats to back it up then? No one seems to be answering me?

I'll answer you. If you play short square balls across the back four or the middle of the park your pass success rate will be good.
Turts doesn't do that. His job is to play that long ball for CJ to chase. Not so easy. He does also get down the wing and cross tha ball into the box as well and I'd suggest he's no better or worse at that than CJ.
Your stats chart is interesting though. Which site do you use?

Better than CJ at crossing. He's an all round steady reliable player, excellent temperament, very professional, and has the flexibility to play in other positions if required. Gabriel will probably have a career higher up the pyramid but he's still learning his craft and is much better going forwards than doing the key role of defending at this point in time. Use both of them, wisely. Critch will, he's wise.

Wise enough to see the goal machine's attributes...

(I really need to stop this now!)

I think if you reduce a player to statistics it gives a false impression. I.e. Turton doesn't complete as many passes. This is true but, I think what Critch wants is a player who does a job positionally and what the stats don't tell you is how many times Turton's defensive work cuts out runs or how many times he holds a line.

There is no question Gabriel is a better player 'on paper' but paper doesn't tell you everything.

It's remarkable how many full back CJ has had on toast this year. It's more than every other game where it looks like he can more or less go at will. How many times has that happened to Turton, certainly since we've sorted the rest of the defense out?

How many games has their left winger dominated in? I can't think of many, since Ipswich, which was also the game Turton played at centre half.

Turton’s and Husband are very-ok ; not great but not rubbish. We have had worse full backs than they, but at this time, we have better within the Club ( Garbutt and Gabriel). I do not panic when either OT or JH are selected....... because they’re ok, but we need better to progress.

He is NOT better than CJ at crossing...that is nonsense and I am sick of reading on here how CJ cant score and CJ cant cross the ball it is just drivel and without foundation. He already has the goals and assists to prove its nonsense. If our players attacked the ball better in the box CJ would already have double figures in assists. He is my player of the season and I just dont understand the criticism of him.

To say Turton is a better crosser of the ball is risible. Also Gabriel has had one bad game defensively against the best player in the league(a game in which Turton also didnt shine). I accept Turton is playing better than he was and although I wouldnt be playing him all the time I havent been asking for him to be dropped either.

I am sick of hearing about CJ can't do this and that too. But the fact is, Turton can swing a cross over from the right into the box, and CJ can't.

Someone described Turton as our Milner recently. Something in that. He is a great influence within the squad, a great pro, he is willing to play wherever he's asked to play, and gives 100% all the time. And does a good job. Fans shouldn't be knocking him IMO.

I have to say I was firmly in the anti Turton camp at the start of this season as, to be fair, he was pretty dreadfull last year.

I was amazed he was offered a new contract, and was hoping he wouldn't sign it!

BUT, I have to eat a slice of humble pie as, for the first time in my life, he has proved me wrong. I would go so far as to say that he is an important part of the squad.

Still prefer Gabriel though.

It's a very passionate post in defence of CJ but it's totally wrong. CJ's decision making is terrible and his final ball is usually very poor. But we have to accept this because if he could cross a ball or make a cultured final pass he'd be playing in the Premier League. His gross inconsistency at that crucial moment is why he's playing in League 1. But I'd still take that because when it does come off then it usually results in a goal. It's just a shame it's not more than once in 30.

I'm a big fan of CJ. He's a fantastic weapon to have, and he rightly plays every game in the league. He occupies players and turns defence into attack in the blink of an eye. And he scores a few goals too, with both feet. He could and should and I think will score more. His crossing technique is his weakness though, and that's obvious. He was signed to cut in and shoot rather than to cross but we've gone 442 with Madine. We don't get enough crosses in now that we have Madine in there. Hopefully set pieces from Garbutt, and KK, will start to address this to some extent. I can see Garbutt pushing forward and swinging crosses from deep too.

You must be missing my comments about Madine's attributes. Or choosing to ignore them. 👍
I'll accept nothing short of complete adulation. I believe I saw you describe him "quite good at what he does"

its a start I guess.

He has 4 goals and 3 assists already in the league (and that is debatable as he has won free kicks and corners that have resulted in goals aswell) so for it to be once in 30 must mean he has had 120 goal chances and 90 assist opportunities in 15 games...that is the stuff of video games and shows your argument to be utter nonsense

Blimey!!!!!!

Humble pie indeed!!!!

Or has someone hacked your account?

I try to remain balanced, and to counter balance the extremes of thought. And emotion. ;-) 😜

(Madine = Giroud) > all other proper strikers.

Never mind all these little winger types and attacking midfielders...

Big man + total footballer in one. Two players, one shirt. Our glorious number 14.

All hail the Goal Machine

I have always thought of him as a steady Eddie, but as the team has improved so has he along with some others
You would have to say the longer Critch has this group the better they are all going to get judging on this season so far.

We're winning games, we're playing well, this just seems like an attempt to find something to moan about. Bizarre, but to each their own.

CJ is developing. Turton in all likelihood is as competent as he is likely to get. It’s ok to determine he doesn’t fit some of the boxes he would need to play at a higher level. He’s obviously ok for now in a more organised set up.

I added the last sentence for effect not thinking that someone could be so blinkered as to take it seriously - but somehow you did. But then you've built up some dreamlike fantasy that CJ plays good assists. 3 assists from the number of crossing / squaring attempts this season absolutely crushes your argument. It's a terrible return based upon the countless good positions he creates for himself.

If he were the player you think he should be then he would be a Premier league star and challenging for the England team...he has created so much more than those 3 named assists as he has won corners and free kicks that no other player could have and we have scored from them. He has also put so many crosses into great positions but nobody has been on his wavelength or gambled to get on the end of them. Kai Kai should have scored a number of times when CJ has crossed the ball. He certainly isnt perfect but at this level he is a massive asset and one of the first names on the team sheet with Maxwell and Dougall.

What does all that mean? 😉
